I have been playing the single player game almost all day. I had to take a pee break once, but I did it at my chair. First off, the game installed without a hitch, and I have encountered absolutely no bugs or glitches.
The game is absolutely amazing. It makes STW seem like tic-tac-toe in comparison. Let me say right here and now that in 35 years of computer gaming (my first PC was steam driven), I have never played a better more fun game.
The visuals are awe inspiring. I have only seen about 1/10th of the 20 hrs of in-game cinematics. The on disk Medieval encyclopedia that is included, has more info about the period than most large city libraries.
The medieval women are breathtaking but sexy in a dark ages sort of way. Upon start up the game immediately increased the speed of my computer from a 1.5 gig to a 2.5. It has doubled my ram and improved my graphics card to a G5 Ti 8800.
Not only all of that, but now I no longer have the heartbreak of psoriases, and my athlete's foot has been completely cured. MTW has given me a virtual permanent woody, and will change life on earth as we know it.
In a related story, federal indictments were issued to Activision today as federal marshals padlocked the doors of their corporate offices and their onsite CD-Rom production and distribution facility. Citing irregularities in accounting practices, the SEC and the FTC have ordered Activision and all of its subsidiaries to cease and desist from all business activities until further notice.
All products and inventories other that those few games sold in stores today are to be pulled off the shelves and the market indefinitely.
Cheers

Just kiddin' around before all of the serious discussions get started.
Actually, I just loaded it up when I got home, and have only played a few instant battles, the campaign tutorial, and fiddled around with some of the options.
Man, my system is not exactly a slouch, but I don't see how any system with the minimum specs listed on the box could begin to run this sucker. I've got a P4 1.7 gig, 512 RDram system with a 64mg G3 Ti200 card. and it doesn't seem to take a very big battle to make my system chug.
I have my system pretty well tweaked out just to run IL-2, but this game seems to be a real perfomance hog. Otherwise, I like what I have seen so far.
Cheers

I hate to say it as it sounds like you've already tweaked it a lot, but it sounds like you'll need some more tweaking, because that's the sort of machine the luckiest amongst us developers have been using, and it certainly shouldn't be chugging. The sound card is a possible culprit. Try turning off sound hardware acceleration and dropping the sound quality to medium or low. The tech forum may be able to take it further.

I have alway suspected that my sound card was cause of some of my slow downs. The Warlord Edition ran much better if I turned the sound off, but was playable with it on, so I just lived with it.
I have a three year old Sound Blaster Gamer Live. I ordered the only drivers available for Window ME on a disk directly from Creative and still had to diable a function to get the card to work with games. It may just be time to upgrade.
Thanks Gil

yup. i think it was the dos drivers on that card that didnt work and would screw up your entire machine...had to disable before any sound would work at all. it would also screw up using the joystick and midi ports.
you might also try some faster vid drivers and turn off things like fauna and smoke and anti-aliasing and background tasks and your power switch and your toaster and any other household appliances that may be eating current.
i'm running a very 'clean' machine with just a 1.2 gig cpu, 512 sdram, and 64 meg vid card and my games all run just fine. no chugging at all.
i could go on, but this really is getting into tech forum stuff now. some new posts over there on a few problems and we've even managed to pull target in over there to help out :)
to the guys at CA, these last couple of weeks have been great with you here answering all of our queries and inanities. thanks.

Uh, I'd be one of those guys running the game under minimum specs: PII 350 with a 16mb Voodoo3 - 256mb of RAM though. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Battles with 600-800 men (so far) get jittery when things heat up. I have 800x600 battle resolution. I've just turned off smoke and fauna and we'll see what that will do. Next I'll work on lowering the sound. I too have a 2 year old Soundblaster Platinum soundcard, but it hasn't given me any problems with games to this point.
I do like what I see so far. Now I need to run off and see some more. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I agree with FO, this game rocks.
Everything you loved from old shoggy (except the japanese) and more.
Single Player has lots of nice details and nuances...

Looks like you will be joining me Greg in auo resolving most of the battles until we get a better computer.

I'm not autoresolving yet DP and I just fought a 2000 man battle. It wasn't too bad. I turned off smoke and fauna. As the battles get larger I'll play with sound as I mentioned above to see what my limits are.

I would still beat you Greg autoresolving though. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif I hope I can play the smaller battles though then I can get a bit of an advantage over the AI.

There's an issue with Soundblaster Live cards where if you have an older driver, it affects the framerate. Grab the latest driver from www.soundblaster.com (http://www.soundblaster.com)
Ignore the driver that's on windows update as it is older than the one on the sb site.

i think we may have to put a thread up in the tech forum for common issues associated with the tw games and maybe an additional thread on cleaning and tweaking your system for optimum TW. or maybe we shld put it in the archive forum so it would stay resident. there seem to be a number of common problems/issues/tweaks that are making high end machines seem like a commodore 64 when running mtw. a lot of them are simple fixes.
i run a 1.2 gig machine, 512 ram, and 64 meg vid card and dont have any problems with lag/chugging, but some 'better' machines seem to be struggling. this can usually be resolved with some fairly standard, easy fixes.
