View Full Version : LAN Party

Yay, as IT Steward I get to run a LAN party at the end of each term.

Few rules are in: must be 15. Must be a student etc.

But the question is: How shall it go?

It is going into it's fifth incarnation now, but it is evolving. It started as LAN with a few consoles. Now we are getting less people playing games, and more people coming with nothing, just there to play consoles. Since there is a limit on space (2 Xbox 360, 2 PS2, 1 Wii) what can we do to entice people to come.

It is now seen as an end of term party with a few games, consoles but more and more people there to do un-computer stuff.

Since we are looking to keep the computer stuff in, how can we still get the non-computer people in as well?

Thanks in advance;
SPWND (www.spwnd.com) Admin team (of which I am part )

If I was running one (with staff permission), I'd 'borrow' two or three of the computer labs, and place UT03/Q3 on the LAN, for an instant 60-90 spots

Awwww come on you don't even need UT03, just the original Unreal Tournament. It's the ultimate LAN party game! A few copies of Starcraft wouldn't hurt, but that requires more dedicated nerds than you might get, and you can use the Spawn feature to place it on a bunch of computers without having to have a copy of the game for each computer!

You should borrow a couple of rooms to stage face to face Mafia games in.

Not exactly a LAN game, though, eh?

I agree with what sapi said: UT03 and Q3 are all you need.

Yes.

If you play 2K4 you can still play a map almost exactly like Deck 17 with the classic option turned on, and then it's almost exactly like UT, go for it!

UT2k4 is an awesome LAN game, so is Call of Duty (1 or 2, either is fine) or one of the Battlefield games. However with CoD you'll want everybody to participate, since I recall there are no bots in that game.

I'd also go for an RTS game. I never liked RA2 until I played it with LAN, then it's surprisingly fun actually. Starcraft would also be good but I'm not sure a lot of people will be interested.

I agree  the original was so cool. Wish I could find a copy somewhere in the stores some day.. :embarassed:

UT2K4 with the classic mode turned on is a lot like the original UT, though it obviously isn't exactly the same, and many of the maps have survived to 2K4 with only minor modifications. You may want to give that a whirl if you haven't already.

A true LAN doesn't use consoles....

Just tell everyone to bring a laptop and then find a router or two for the connection or if you have wifi aceess, use the school's network.

Couple of games that are easy to get and not too hard on system requiremments:

Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne (If melee isn't your style, get Dota)
Counterstrike 1.6 or Source (King of all LAN FPS imo)
Starcraft: Brood War (You can just spawn everything)

The problem with CS is some people like me hate it for some inexplicable reason. I'm really picky though so I wouldn't say don't use it, I'd just keep another FPS standing by.

Flight sims would be cool too, but they attract a very small crowd...

As I said, forget laptops and consoles; use the school's computer labs...

That should be over a hundred computers for you - I doubt you'll run out :P

If you have the hardware and interest grab IL2, it's a wonderful flight sim.

And for another hardcore crowd you could look into Operation Flashpoint, or any version of Rainbow Six.

Depends how hardcore the crowd is: OFP is just that: hardcore. Rainbow Six is perhaps better, IMO. Eh, more accessible, that is.
