I would go al-la Gaestae. :clown:

hair spiked and bristling, war paint all over, a small hand shield and a spear, and a good old hatchet or short sword stuck in my belt... I think I'd wear pants... maybe a hard metal plate over my gut...

and I would participate in ambushes where the enemy find himself cut down by javelins, spears, arrows, and stones from all sides, and then, while disoriented and frantic... sees a bunch of crazy ass warriors charging out

thats how I'd roll

I'd settle for some lamellar (sp?) armor, bronze/iron greaves, hand guards, and a sweet looking boetian helmet, like those the hetairoi wear (at least I think those are boetian helmets). And of course, a kopis sword and an aspis shield, complete with useless yet good looking designs on it.

I'd go into battle anyday with that outfit.

Of course If I'm on horse back I'm going all out . Chain , iron plate over that . Ful blown Iron plate leg and arm guards . Kick ass mythril helm a la Citadel Guards(shout out to 4th age total war)

on a horse's back, without armor, and riding as fast and as far as possible from the danger, without looking back.

yeah, I lead armies from the rear... a 1000-strong meat shield is worth every armor you'll ever make.

I'd have that roman chain, that cool crested greek helmet from Vanilla RTW, shin guards, an aspis(sp?) and a spear and a gladius.

I would have chainmail, chainmail sleeves and an iron breastplate ontop of that, with my Boetian helmet (basically what the Hetairoi use) Falcata and xyston on my trusty steed bred from royality among horses in Macedonia, oh and throw in some sort of smaller version of a hoplon on my back encase I get throw off my trusty steed :laugh4:

It depends, If i was a megalomaniacal King I would dress myself up to the extreme, the most impractical junk i could get, dragon designs and jewelles and all sorts. If i were a regular soldier, like a mercenary, where the state didnt provide armour, i reckon id go chain mail, good helmet, kickass shield and some greaves.

I'd go with what ever Hellenistic slingers wear. Those seem light enough to enjoy the sun.

Well okay, it depends on weather I would spawn in mediterranean or in Finland. If I spawned here, I'd wear just about everything. Maybe some golden armour, so I could trade my way to sunnier places.

Zarax
09-04-2007, 08:18
Lorica Plumata would be good for me thanks lol.
If I had the money I would just go to Iberia and cover in gold the best smiths to provide for me the best panoply they can make...

Conradus

Either I'd go dressed up as a Thessalian or Hetairoi, or I'd be driving over the steppes on a small horse in typical Sauromatae/Scythian clothing, with my trusted bow and arrows.

Whatever the armor is called that the Dosidataskeli (sp?) are wearing. I'd also want a big ass Aspis-shield to hide behind, and a one of those eastern maces to :smash: heads with. Of corse, with that kind of gear I'd better stay the hell out of deserts :sweatdrop:

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the linothorax. Considering how light and durable it was it would really be an ideal armor. All you need is something to prevent nipple chaffing and you're set.

By the way, the Dosidataskeli wear an armor similar to the Lorica Plumata that Zarax mentioned: scales of chain mail - although I can't remember if the scales were attached directly to the chain or simply worn over them.

I think that's the reason no one has mentioned it. Nipple chafings are wicked nasty, and I should know, having gotten one major bad-ass one after running a half marathon. o.o

I'd want what the Dorkim Aloopim are wearing. Brilliant white and nice chain mail.

I would myself be a horseman, so it depends on who is againt me.
:turtle:
Against horse archers, I'd favour heavy protection for my horse and myself.

Against enemy I can reach, my long sword and a small bucler, plus some backplate to avoid unfair backstab.

Dosidataskeli armor topped with a white tabard(for derserts), A very large Two handed Axe(I wouldn't really need a shield), a Boetrian helmet with a coif on the sides(not a face veil, I would like to see clearly)And one of those cataphract arm guards on the left arm(the ones cataphracts and Dacian campaigners wore), and a short sword to top it off.

the number one priority Ill have for defence is a big shield. like the oval celtic shields or the hoplite shield. I think a shield plays a very big role in defending one from blows. I would choose a nice big shield over any kind or armor any time.

I'd prefer the armour of distance -> Me being several thousand km away from anyone wanting to recruit me or anywhere someone might want to invade :tumbleweed:

Failing that, lots of armour covering as much of me as possible.

Woah that makes sense. Or you could instal a zipper in the armor. That would count both as protection and easy to saciate necrophilic needs!
Of ocurse this would be purely accademic id the other guy was wearing full armor seing as you couldn't reach him without having to remove the armor.

Cheers...

Something simple, I think. A good chainmail, and a helmet with preotection for the nose and the neck, lined with mail. And maybe a plate for the belly, and definately some extra protection for the crotch.

09-05-2007, 21:49
I think I'd go with hypaspist loadout. The aspis and the longsword are a deadly combination and the equipement is light enough when the time comes to "dar ás gambias" (Run like hell nearly as if an army is pursuing you wich considering the time, probably would.).

Cheers...

If I was a Roman, then I'd go with the Hamata armour of a principe. If I was fighting in a Hellenic setup, I'd rather be in the light cavalry.

My preferred armour is about a thousand fellow soldiers looking out for me.

Probably a bronze cuirass like the ones you see Spartans wearing. Actually i'd have the shield the Spartans use too. Not a spear though, i'd have one of those clubs the eastern general bodyguards use, that way it doesn't matter if your enemy is wearing armour or not, you can still cripple him with one blow.

Pharnakes
11-04-2007, 21:02
Beotian helm with thracian half face mask, Bronze half cuirras with a linen back, scale reinforced pteyurguesSP? (something like that) thigh/genital protectors anyway, and greaves on top of makedonian half boots. For my left arm a pelte or thuroes and 2-3 soilifera, for my right a decent sized spear and a one handed rhomphia like the thriacian peltastai use.

If I had a horse I would want the scale front armour like the early Baktrian Bodygaurds, with linen on the rest of the horse, a kontos and a persian straight sabre. Probably with a pelte again incase I have to dismount.

Ohh, and a dagger incase I loose my other weapons or get caught in a very close melee.

Ohh, and also a couple of clay pots wraped in straw with greek fire in them, plus a special clip on my armour to hold a section of slow match.:smash:

I would use a Consular army, or better two, as protection and would equipe myself with an aditional 100 Germanic horsemen, just in case that... And then I would refuse to wear any armor to show the lads what a brave guy I am.

It was scales sewn to felt that was worn over chain.

I would take the linothorax and an anti-chafe undershirt. Shinguards, light plywood shield mit leder (which would be worn like a phalangite's) und something on my right arm (hardened leather works), which will be clutching a falx or a rhomphia. Perhaps a phrygian or boeotian helm...just something awesome.

Well, if I was in this period then it would only make sense that I had a time machine. Ergo, Gothic armour + Shotgun.

A montiefierto(sp?) style, late-roman republic, with chain face mask like argyspadi thorakatii(sp?).A good ole' Theuros shield. Lorica Hamata, chain mail, with linen cuirass over (linthorax?). A couple of javelins, a celtic longsword, and a dagger as a back up.

Dragon Skin body armor by Pinnacle Armor would do me fine:yes:

lol, except that would only make you invunerable in the chest and back area (it's a vest) and wouldn't protect you from blunt force trauma. It'd make you immune to the arrows, crossbows, ballistas, and 7.62 mm bullets used by the ancient world though...
