View Full Version : The EB Google Earth Game

Teleklos Archelaou

After enjoying the Google Earth game that goes on in the Tavern gameroom, and having messed around with EB locations in Google Earth quite a bit, I thought I'd try this.

I'll show here a shot from Google Earth of either an EB city or a wonder (i.e., "unique building"). You guess which one it is. Feel free to use Google Earth to figure it out, *but* don't cheat and use the EB .kmz file we made available not too long ago. That's no fun. :skull:

It shouldn't take too long on most of these. Here's the first one!

The Acropolis of Athens

I've made a vow and I'll turn into a bookworm if I'm wrong :book:

edit
alright, I'll get a library card tomorrow

I concur.

Well, not on the bookworm bit.

I concur as well...you can see the shadow of the columns :)

I don't think so, where's the amphitheatre at the foothill? The Parthenon should also be in the larger square, not in the back.

Also, lacks urbanization.

MarcusAureliusAntoninus

I thought I knew what it was, so I looked it up on Google Earth to be sure and I was right. I won't say, though, since I cheated.

At least it looks Greek. Nah, too big of a world for me to start guessing.

I thought it could be the forum (or whatever is the EB wonder there, but no coliseam...

Tellos Athenaios

Forum Romun?! Didn't exist in our time frame. ~;) Capitolium? Nah, not urbanized enough.

Teleklos Archelaou
09-04-2007, 22:52
No one has it yet? I thought that peculiar shape to the main building would be enough of a unique thing to make it more likely someone would get it.

Sassem

is it

Temple of Olympian Zeus (http://www.travel-to-europe.info/2007/03/temple_of_olymp.html)

???

It doesn't look Greek to me, the circular building adjoining it is quite odd. Carthaginian perhaps?

Close.

Allright, if no-one else is going for it. Temple complex of Baalbeck, Lebanon, clearly identifiable due to the hexagonal building on the eastside. Part Phoenician, part Roman at least.

Riiiight, on the tip of my tongue. How about if we start from Stonehenge and make our way up from there? ~

OK so I don't recognize the pic but how can that have been mistaken for the Athens Acropolis?! :dizzy2:

Tellos Athenaios
09-05-2007, 18:16
People thinking it looks Greek and thinking it looks in ruins. That must be it.

However, having seen some German picutes of this site made in 1936 I can confirm that there“s more to the Akropolis of Athens than just that.

Geoffrey S

Oh yeah, it was amazing walking around there.

This is the correct answer. It is the Heliopolis.

Is that the pyramids of El Kurru in Sudan? The one with where all those nubian kings and queen are buried right? Or am I way off? I think I remember seeing them on Discovery channel.

Lysander13

Gaias and Lysander13 got it right. It really looks a lot like you'd expect it to given the photo even of it in the game

How about another one? They finally got this area covered in good detail very recently, so here we go!

Site of the Nemean Games would be my answer.

Teleklos Archelaou
09-09-2007, 14:33
Yep, it's Nemea. The stadium of course is in the bottom right, and the tunnel leads in the direction of the sanctuary (though the tunnel itself is short). You can see the temple of Zeus in the top left, with the columns casting shadows on the ground.

Number 4: Let's see if anyone can get this one - it is currently in the game:

Bah!!...I looked at Nemea on about 3 different occasions. I must have not panned in the right direction or most likely was right over it and completely blew it as far as recognition goes....:wall:

Sassem, a while back, there was a release for Google Earth, with the markers of all of the cities and wonders on it. You could download that and have all of the places marked.

EDIT: Found it!

Yes thank you thats the one I use but the coordinates would be much easier because the names of that list aren't always the same

like Pyramids of Gebel Barkal I can't find them so if the coordinates are given it's much easier

I know it's sounds lazy but most of those names (in the google list) say nothing to me

But remember it's cheating to use it. 'sides, what would be left of the contest if you knew the coordinates anyway?

After the right answer is given what I ask before it's just for my own list to complete because the list of google earth is a little bit incomplete in my list anyway

Teleklos Archelaou
09-09-2007, 22:04
Yeah, most of these new ones aren't on that old list. I've got a new list that I'll upload at some point, with all these marked, but it's no fun to do that yet. Plus I saved a number of these jpg images a week or so ago and am too lazy to go and look up the coordinates and put them in one at a time here as people get them right. I'll upload the whole thing later.

No guesses on this one?

Stonehenge! What, that's not it!? There's a circle, and there's stones. Or something. I have no clue.

You know what aggravates me...I know for a fact that i ran into TA's latest pic while i was hunting for the previous one that turned out to be Nemea. Now i can't find the damn thing....Aaarrgghh!! :wall:

Teleklos Archelaou

The terrain gives a lot away if you stop and think about what is being shown in the pic.

MarcusAureliusAntoninus
09-10-2007, 06:27
Lets see. It's deserty, but with some small trees/brush. The roads aren't very well developed and are mostly dirt roads. Very primative town around it. Looks like some sort of hill fort/town, maybe Arab? But it looks to green from Yemen...

pezhetairoi
09-10-2007, 17:09
Looks African to me. Somehow all those squarish buildings remind me of them adobe-looking houses in Morocco overlooking the souk. That thing looks too small to be a citadel, though, for all its unnaturally round shape.

COnclusion: I have no clue. *bow*

Its Siwa I think.
I was looking at that on Google maps a few months ago :)

Teleklos Archelaou
09-12-2007, 12:51
Siwa is right (i.e., the Ammonion in the Libyan desert)! You can see all the palm trees around it (it's in an oasis after all), and the main citadel in the bottom left of the image.

Ok, here's the next one, a bit easier!
