does anybody out there experience the joy of having the game crash about 100 years into a full campaign? no error message, it just simply closes after I press the "end turn" button to advance to the next turn.

do any of the patches out there address this?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Hi and welcome Mark Sheep,
May I ask which Total War game and which version of it you are playing? The crash you are experiencing may or may not be fixed by patching to the latest version, although it may be worth attempting to resolve the problem.

If you are playing Rome: Total War or Medieval 2: Total War, then you can investigate it's version by entering the "Options" menu and looking in the top left hand corner. There should be a number there, 1.x. Unfortunately, for R:TW at least, the patches are not cumilative, so what this number is will effect which ones you need to apply. Beware though, patching the game can cause existing saved games to become non-playable.

If you have Rome: Total War and the version number is 1.0 or 1.1, then, to step upto the latest version, you first need to install either patch 1.2 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&id=483&catid=23) or patch 1.3 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&id=23&catid=23). Many have had issues with the 1.3 patch, so it may be easier to use 1.2.

Once you have completed this step, simply download and install the 1.5 patch (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&id=24&catid=23). Once you have finished, and if everything was successful, your game should be at the most recent version.

If you have Rome: Total War, the version number is 1.2 or 1.3 and you don't have Barbarian Invasion installed, then you can simply download and install the 1.5 patch (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&id=24&catid=23) straight away.

If you have Rome: Total War, the version number is 1.3, and you have Barbarian Invasion installed, then you will require the 1.6 patch (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&id=25&catid=23). This updates both R:TW and BI to 1.5 and 1.6 respectively, both the latest versions of these games.

If you have Rome: Total War and the version number is 1.5, then you don't need to do anything. Your game is already patched to the latest version.

If you have Medieval 2: Total War and the version number is 1.0, then you will need to install the 1.2 patch (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&id=478&catid=157). Please read this (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=84698) before installing though - the patch can have some problems if any of the listed conditions are met.

If you have Medieval 2: Total War and the version number is 1.1, then, unfortunately, you will have to reinstall your game to drag it back to version 1.0 and then follow the instructions for that version. Unfortunately, the 1.2 patch will only install upon a fresh copy of the game. Sorry for any inconvenience.

If you have Medieval 2: Total War and the version number is 1.2, then you are patched upto the latest version and no additional patching is required.

If patching does not resolve your problem or if you are already patched to the latest version, may I suggest that you scan your hard-drive for errors. To do this, on Windows XP, simply enter "My Computer", right-click on your hard-drive (often C:\), press Properties, click on the Tools tab and, in the error-checking category, select "Check Now". Once you've done that, simply scan away and fix anything dodgy which you may find.

If fixing all errors does not resolve your problem, then may I suggest that you use the show error extension. You can do this by right-clicking on your game's shortcut, either M2:TW or R:TW, selecting "Properties" and then choosing the "Shortcut" tab. After that, you can simply add the text " -show_err" onto the end of the target line. Once you have completed that step, R:TW should show you an error message whenever it crashes.

If it's possible, could you then write down the error message's contents and post it up. It may be able to help us work out what the issue may be.

Hope this helps, good luck, cheers!

BTW, sorry if this isn't very clear. I'm busy consuming glass four of this very interesting bottle of French Wine.

Hey thanks for such a thorough troubleshooting guide. I will check the version when I get home. I suppose it's ok if I can't use any saved games, just means I have to start a new campaign. :beam:
