View Full Version : No free upkeep units in Kingdoms, right?
The building browser for the Mayans shows 2 free upkeep units for a small wooden wall, but when I build a militia unit my army costs go up. Has anyone seen any evidence for free maintenance? It makes a difference in what you choose for a garrison.
There are free upkeep units in Kingdoms. New Spain's sword and pike militias can be garrisoned for free. And it works like vanilla M2TW in the other three.

Me too. Didn't notice any changes playing as Novgorod.
Only thing I noticed was that Moated forts give 2 free upkeep slots, don“t know if in Crusades but Britannia at least.
Stone forts are only in the Britannia campagin.
I do believe they're in the Crusades campaign, as well.
Haven't played that campaign enough to have a battle in one, but they sure look like stone forts on the map, and I know they're permanent.
Hey can you build 'semi-permanent' forts everywhere or are they static like settlements ?

Speaking of free upkeep, I've seen mentioned of the castles description cards that they had some free upkeep slots but I've never seen a single unit getting free upkeep in any catle (whatever the campaign, be it vanilla 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2) and not even in the Long Road Mod...
So is there any free upkeep in castles ?
@Tristan
check Foz's posts on this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=77940) for how to mod free upkeep castle units (though his patcher exe was for 1.1, i believe). personally, i haven't modded that as i find the economy side easy as it is.

So it confirms that on vanilla, the game is different from what is stated on building cards... Too bad...

I have fought a battle with one as Wales vs. the English. The gate faces away from ramp across the moat. So you either brake down the towers or brake through the wall. I choose the latter.
Also got proof that Crusades has stone forts? There are zero on the map and I didn't see any option to upgrade.

the real advantage of free upkeep slots in castles is that it makes it easier for the AI to run a good economy
face it, whatever the situation you're going to end up rolling in cash compared to the AI, but if you can give them a little help it makes them field better armies

I always have some difficulty rolling in cash... Must be doing something wrong...
In my last TLR campaign almost half the factions are richer than I am and 5 or 6 are even rich or very rich (very few fighting occuring for those factions...)
So I think those free upkeep slots would help everybody...

Just got my Kingdoms game in the mail the other day. I've noticed, so far, that free upkeep for the old world factions works about the same as before. But I don't see any sign of free upkeep in the native american factions.

Only briefly toyed with Aztecs but I think I noticed same thing: No free upkeep. But to be fair the standard maintenance is much lower than western anyway - is it for balance?
Maintenance normal in britanna and crusades though (so far)

If this hasn't been answered yet - as far as I can see you can't build forts at all in Kingdoms....but there are permanent forts dotted around the maps.
A step forwards (moats and stone forts) and a step backwards (can't build them where you want) so nothing to get excited about really.

The English campaign will not allow you build forts. You can garrison two free units in any fort on the map though.
The Holy Land scenerio allows you to build perm. forts but there is no free upkeep in them. This is nice to send a general out to build your towers/forts all at the same time. I only played as KOJ so I assume all other factions are the same.
