Were celtic chariots really fighting as skirmishers? I have read sth about chariots in anciet times and it seems that there were basically 3 types of chariots: light eastern chariots used as mobile archers, heavy scythed chariots and chariots used in Europe. Europe was mostly covered with dense forests, so chariots couldn't fight as archers (or other skirmishers). Instead they were fighting as mobile infantry. I know that it is impossible in RTW to make chariots that would merely transport soldiers but it would still give me more sense if Cidaihn fought in melee (sorry for my crappy English).

Yes it is true that chariots in western europe were used as mobile infantry platforms. However we disagree that the best way of representing this is to have them equipped and suitably armoured for melee. There are a number of reasons for this, but most importantly its impossible without seriously making them over-powered. We decided that a better way to represent them was to have them as mobile firing platforms (they were used to throw javelins into the enemy before the infantry men launched off and and into the enemy) and also to cause fear, which would be the case anyway. They can also be used to break the ordered formation of heavy infantry and are very effective against cavalry.
Its not perfect, but we feel it is the best representation of what the chariot was for.

Now I can say what I want to say, I am aware that you EB guys are sick of my moaning but why are they still the BG unit!? You guys even say yourself that they were hardly used in combat anymore, if you are so desperate to have them, why not just make them a regular unit?

Because Casse chiefs were in fact on chariots. That's how they went to war.

true but they were hardly taken down by every one hit from enemy as its common in eb....if this were so im sure they would drop their chariot soon.
after all this is still a game and not a documentation over ancient times...if its impossible to make them to those combat units that they were in fact in ancient times, so its mayby better to drop them as general unit and give the Casse cheifs anything that make them usable in combat like all other generals...i would say gameplay>reality in this case (and as said in reality they were much more durable and better usable infight as here ingame)

Go and play a different game then.
Personally, I find them fantastic as bodyguards just because you can't use them as you normally would another factions bodyguards. They are support troops (ever heard of them in other RTS).
History inspires gameplay. Just because you can't get your head around using them differently, doesn't mean that they can't.
I never said they were more durable or better in a fight. The infantry would have been few in number who jumped off the chariots. They would of been shocktroops hitting an enemy line where it hurt the most. The same thing happens with this unit as it is now, but instead of charging into melee you get heavy javelins to throw into the back of the enemy.

But I think this is already in the latest build. (0.81a v2)
With these stats the generals will stand a little longer in melee, although they're still not very useful as a melee unit. They are very useful as a supporting unit against infantry though.

I've changed the chieftan's bodyguard unit for Casse. It's not hard to do.:2thumbsup:
