There are more than 2000 posts in Tavern - more than most threads have views. I propose to have a drink on Bootsiuv - our first tavernkeeper who is too busy to show around lately... :medievalcheers:
BTW - I have been to Romania for several times and I must confirm what Emperor Burakuku have said; I will just add that mountains are wonderfull (Fagaras, Paring, ...)

I respected him for Ben Hur. I totally looked down at him for so narrow-mindedly saying guns would be banned 'over his dead body'. After Bowling for Columbine, the act that he could still say such a thing disgusted me and overturned any glory/fame his movies could have given him. Good riddance and I wish he'd died earlier.
Now that he's dead, can the US finally restrict gun ownership?
....Adamantium LS. Oooh. Now if only adamantium existed...
Pez, we're a bit harsh...
no respect for, Planet of the Apes?
Now that he's dead, can the US finally restrict gun ownership?
Since you're not American, I don't expect you to realize that where there are less gun restrictions, there is less crime.(ex. Texas)
Edit: Atleast I hope you're not American. Ignorance is bliss.

Are you really saying guns => less crime?
I love guns too, but if you are making that statement you must understand you are really mistaken. After all, Texas seems to be the crime center of the US.
Emperor Burakuku
04-06-2008, 12:49
Now let me see if I get it... hmm... If the statement is corect: More guns, less crimes. Because criminals are afraid of decent armed citizens. Ok? Then: This also means that there are much more criminals in U.S then... let's say there are in E.U. Right? Because guns are banned here, and still there are far fewer crimes. This is unfortunate then, right? So... if... in Europe we would be allowed to carry weapons... there would be almost no crimes at all? Sounds risky to me... But I just woke up, so I'm a little sleepy. Maybe I misunderstood the whole thing? :juggle2:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_control
Worldwide politics and legislation regarding gun use and possession.
IMHO, guns facilitate killing. If I wanted to kill somebody without owning a pistol for example... should I search for a knife? Should I beat him to death?
Finland: according to the Finnish Ministry of the Interior, there are 32 privately owned firearms per 100 civilians. "Unlicensed firearms are estimated at around 1,5 per 100. 60% of firearm permits are issued for hunting weapons".
It has also been proved that firearms possession facilitates suicide. Would you like perhaps to talk about suicidal rate in Finland? No irony intended, I just think that a gun also facilitates suicide.
Now, this may not be the right place to discuss this, but is just that it seems simple enough to me: Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Is just that you can do it much easier by owning a gun. I will not discuss this any further because the subject displeases me greatly. Cheers!
*Walks away to the bar and orders another round*
*Wanders where's Gabeleisis... oh that Tuica!*

Because I have some writings to do, and if I don't sleep (in the Tavern, behind the counter) I might fall asleep. Get it? Hey guys, sorry I have to rehash an old topic and perhaps induce a fight, but I HAVE to say something at this point.
@ptr.
A very simple fact. You hope I'm not American? Damn straight.
I come from Singapore.
Guns are banned.
We have only 450 crimes per 100000 people on average annually, of which most are petty crimes like cheating and theft. In 2007, for a population of 4 million people, we only had 20 murders in the ENTIRE YEAR.
You got anything to say now?
I can't believe you'd come into this Tavern and come up with some insipid argument like you just did. What amazing gall to come up and try to tell me I'm an idiot. Well done for explaining to everyone why I hated Charlton Heston for making that same argument you did.
You have no idea how hard we Singaporeans laugh at you Americans. Particularly at a certain Texan who's been trying to be a stand-up comedian without realising the world had stopped laughing five years ago. Look where your 'lesser gun restrictions' mentality has brought the world today. 'Nuff said.
Now that's done...
Beer is good!

o, btw, Alexandros Maximus, you almost killed the thread! -1 karma for you!
:whip:
hey, why did that almost kill the thread??? is it because the super-awesome "saké bomb" is something most ppl here dont know about????
if thats it, i can explain it, because the saké bomb is a pretty cool thing to drink, cuz it gets you hammered really fast.
like, "i drank three of them and stood up and got mad dizzy" fast.
Hooahguy
04-09-2008, 01:42
you almost did b/c the tavern went quiet for over 6 hours b/c of ur comment!
Alexandros Maximus
04-09-2008, 03:17
yeah i know, and i'm guessing thats because everybody was like
"wtf is a sake bomb?!??"
Sake bomb: (n), When you place a shot of sake on a pair of chopsticks that are resting on a big glass of beer, so its directly above the beer in the glass. Then all your friends chant "sake! sake! sake!...BOMB!!!" when they shout bomb, you slam ur fists on the bar, causing the shot of sake to fall in the beer glass, which makes the beer fizz up, whereupon you chug the whole thing, and proceed to boostathon your friends.
If you can manage to stand after the 2nd or third one, that is.

Sounds nasty. Wooh.
Ummm LS thread? Maybe not so soon. I'm getting a bit morally indignant right now because a teacher in my school punched a student, and because the principal is that teacher's protector, he thinks he can get away with anything and indeed, rather than sacking the teacher (which is the ministry of education policy for any teachers who use physical violence) they are trying to hush and cover up the incident.

No! Mine was!!! :embarassed: :smash: :furious3:
Thanks again Emperor. That forum looks quite good (roman-army). On a related note, what about books related to the rise of Rome? I know a couple of good ones on the decline (the classical Gibbons one and a more recent one), but none on the rise.
Edit: Sorry, I should consult the bibliography thread!

*smacks Olimpian for drinking the filth called Heineken*
Hmmm top strategists...
1. Alexander, without question the best
2. Hannibal, he would have been first if he had a decisive victory
3. not sure
of all time...
1. Genghis Khan, the biggest empire the world had ever seen
2. Alexander, the best of the west
3. Robert E. Lee, he came close to victory in a war the south never should have had a chance at winning.

We can argue a lot regarding Lee and Hannibal, because they won a lot but eventually they lost their wars... I started this more as a joke but ow that we started... I remember a scene from Appians Syriaca (wich wasn't probably true but it was nice). Here I go:
Appian says that L.C. Scipio was sent as the supervisor of the roman embassy to Antiochos Megas III. So... Guess who he met there? Hannibal of course who invited him to his chambers to a glass of whatever. And they we're playing chess (if I remember correctly, might be wrong). And chatting, remembering their struggles... Scipio Africanus now, asks Hannibal who were his 3 most favorite generals from all times.
Hannibal wonders a little then says. The 1st must be Alexander without any doubt, at the age of 20 he was the most powerful man in the world. He conquered the greatest empire known... bla bla. "And the second" Scipio asks. "Hmmm the second I think must be Phyros Ayakides. He fought both you romans and us, and he was a true genius of the battlefield. As for the 2rd... could be Epaminondas but no... I must say the 3rd must be me." And at this remark, Scipio is astonished: "Yes, I won't say you're not the one of the greatest generals of all times, you defeated us many times and against odds, but well I will say it. I have defeated you, did I not?" Hannibal: "Yes you did, and with my own weapons, but did I not fight for 15 years having victory after victory and all the times against numerical superiority, on a foreign land and against the bravest of soldiers?"
P.S This is what I remember from what I've read, but all in all it's quite accurate as far as I can tell. Too bad that it probably didn't happened in reality. And sorry for the bad english there. :beam:
I wrote a paper arguing that Lee's actions led to a faster Confederate defeat.
My key points were:
-Technology and tactics gave the defender a lopsided advantage.
-Lee regularly turned defense battles into offensive battles, making the Union the defender.
-Because of this, he took a higher percentage of losses than his opponents and sometimes even more losses in raw numbers--losses he could not afford to take because he knew that he had no guarantees that he could replace them.
-Invasions of the north--Antietam and Gettysburg campaigns--were futile gestures which, in the case of Antietam, led to 2/3 of his army deserting and, in the case of Gettysburg, led to rediculously high losses in an offensive battle.
-Lee would have been better served with a strictly defensive poise and avoiding prolonged engagements--Fabian tactics--until he had the enemy exactly where he wanted them and then held firm in strong defense positions and allow the Union to bleed itself dry.

@ Dhampir - Thanks for the Marian "upgrade". Will try tonite.
I just wander, as atm I'm reading by chance Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, how come that this guy, Marcus, in his position and against all odds was such a good man.
I am impressed sir, and you say English is not your native language? One might say I have a bit of reading (classics and otherwise) under my belt, but I struggle with Aurelius. It is a slow read. You hit some excellent points though. Has mankind's enlightenment not advanced in 2000 yrs? He is a fascinating man. However, to his everlasting embarassment, he did install his son - Commodus - on the throne and set the precedent for incompetent sons coming to power. BTW, have you ever found a dual-language version of Meditations? (latin/english)

Top Three Generals? Great question which could generate a lot of discussion. W/o being an expert on the subject, here is my 2 cents...
1 - Alexander
2 - Hannibal
3 - Saladin
Some for reasons already listed, but lots of other reasons as well.
Or Gauderian?

Well there are sources which suggest that he indented to leave the throne to a general from Syria, don't remember the name. But while Marcus was sick, this dude proclaimed himself emperor and he was assassinate before Aurelius could do anything.
Thanks for the compliments sir, you're kind.
Regarding the reading, which is in english because I am unable to find it translated in romanian (my native language)... it's almost impossible to me to follow the whole phrase. But I fight 'till the end. It's way to nice to abandon/postpone it.

I just happened to catch a program called Rome: Rise and Fall of an Empire on the History Channel. This particular program was centered around the wars with the Cimbrans in 113BC.
I watched only the first 9 minutes and couldn't take it anymore. One line I liked especially was "the highest office was reserved for members of Rome's most emminent, long standing PATRICIAN families, men like Gnaeus Papirius Carbo".
A shiny green balloon for anyone who can tell me what's wrong with that line!
Also, a shiny green balloon for anyone who can guess what the soldiers where wearing during the cut scenes of Gnaeus Papirius Carbo's soldiers!
The History Channel, you've got to love them.
