Well, I'm playing as the Egyptians and noticed that the Elmo Heads only had a small number of troops in Granada. So, I launched an attack - and why not, as I'd beaten them out of North Africa previously. Unfortunately, I didn't have any intelligence-gathering units in Iberia, so I didn't know anything about how they were faring north of Granada. I took Granada but then they took it back, captured Morocco, and are now coming after me in North Africa with masses of soldiers. I'll fight to the bitter end, even if greatly outnumbered, but I should have had intelligence units in Iberia before deciding to attack. We live and learn.

I did the same thing in the other direction. Apparently, the Moslem AI trusts you if you are a fellow Moslem. So they leave the border unguarded. But if you decide, Shogun style, to make a quick land grab, you are going to be in such deep sheep dip that you will convert to Catholicism on the spot...

even Sun Tsu acknowledged the need for spies, I suggest you should read the chapter: Using Spies,
---------------------------------------
"You must use five types of spies.
You need local spies.
You need inside spies.
You need double agents.
You need doomed spies.
You need surviving spies."
---------------------------------------
- Hope it helps, and yes I know it is in medieval europe, but I admire Sun Tsu very much, and think not his concepts will be forgotten just because of another era, culture, and geographic location.

You can burn their buildings and take their women. A raid is a bad deal for you.

i almost did the same thing with an attack on the eygptians, but did send an emissary to adjoining provinces and sure enough, they had a nice BIG army sitting there a province away from where i was going to attack. i decided to wait :)
the sun tsu reference is indeed applicable to this game. dont forget to spy on your own generals. they can have 'hidden' vices that you may not know of and cant find out without a spy. remember, the guys that made this game, also made shogun and we/mi. they are fully aware of sun tsu :)

Playing as the Poles I had something similar happen. I was grabbing all the neutral provices I could and was doing quite well. Then I went to Lithuania. They had an army with something more than peasants in it. My general is now (in)famous for running away.
