View Full Version : The 50 Worst Cars of All Time
It's one of those list thingies (http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/completelist/0,,1658545,00.html). Pretty good selection, although I'm steamed they omitted the AMC Pacer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Pacer).

The vast majority of the cars on the list seem to be American. I'm not sure whether that's a reflection on where the magazine is published, or on the relative merits of our car industries.
What on earth is the 2002 BMW 7-series doing on there, though? I'd gladly trade in my old civic for one of those.
Pretty good selection, although I'm steamed they omitted the AMC Pacer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Pacer).
1978 AMC Pacer
Come on, you don't think they'd forget the Pacer? :laugh4:
Happily, I've never owned any of these cars. People were pretty peeved when GM started taking away their EV1s though, so it couldn't have been that bad.
Like I said, I'm really glad they included the Pacer. What's wrong with you people?

Hmmm. Looking at more of their '50 worst of all time', it appears a lot are on for political reasons (Model T and Hummer H2 'because it was non-politically correct!') or because of one or two minor flaws (BMW 7 series).
Heck, they put a Lamborghini LM002 on there because 'This V12-powered super dune buggy gets on the list — well, my list anyway — purely because of its appalling clientele.'
I mean, its one thing to disagree over which styling and design and underpowered engine is worst, but this something else altogether.

I was looking into buying a used BMW in 2003, and let me assure you, the original iDrive was not a minor flaw. Owners were trading in their cars because they couldn't deal with it.
When I finally settled on a used car, I made absolutely sure that it did not have iDrive installed. Who wants to navigate four sub-menus to adjust the air conditioning?

wheres the Lada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lada_Riva)?
Ford Model T??? Insanity.

I liked the look of the Plymouth Prowler. Very nice look, not good engine...
Also, the Lada looks like the Russians were trying to confuse you.
Which end is the front?
I think we can all agree that any list of bad cars that omits the Lada is just silly. And the author's reasoning for the Model T is kinda weird. He attacks it for making cars a norm, and only mentions in passing its supposed mechanical problems. Where was his editor? Asleep?

I don't think the Trabant belongs on the list. From what I've heard it was a very simple, fairly easy to repair and reliable car, and the idea of using duroplast was fairly innovative at the time. The main problem I had heard of was that the industry in Eastern Germany wasn't capable of putting out huge numbers of Trabies, but the people still love Trabants in Eastern Germany and there were plenty of mopeds to make up for the small number of Trabies produced. Plus there was the Warthburg (Anyone want to help my spelling on this?) if you wanted more of a family car.

I can agree with some of the ones on the list.
The H2 is bigger than an Xbox. Just try and find a parking space for that behemoth.
The Pinto is just a fiery death-machine.
The Yugo. Nuff' said.

I always thought of the AMC Pacer the way I thought of the lead singer for the Pogues....there is a level of ugliness that supercedes itself to be oddly appealing. Alcohol obviously helps.
The Chevette was an essay in mediocrity. It got me from point A to point B for a few years.
http://www.channel4.com/4car/media/100-greatest/03-large/40-fiat-multipla.jpg
This, should be number one.
The Pinto is just a fiery death-machine.
I have never owned a car I enjoyed driving more! As long as you don't let some one ram you in the arse, it is as safe as just about anyother car made at its time. That thing could too. :P
It certainly isn't a family car, but with a little modification can be a great single driver car.
I don't know why the 2000 Ford Excursion and the Model T are on the list. The Ford Excursion is one heck of a vehicle, and the Model T...well. The model T wasn't custom made like all the other cars of its time, so of course it wouldn't be the best out there, but there could be a lot out there; something never before possible.
It is also completely ridiculous to include the Explorer. The Explorer is a star of the vehicle industry. It is a heck of a lot safer than a minivan...did I metion more reliable? (Also I will never forget the time when one saved my behind by towing my Taurus out of the snow. :P)
This has to be put on the 50 worst lists of all time list.

What, no Vauxhall Viva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vauxhall_Viva) ???
My parents and some friends used to own one of these as a sort of 2nd car shared between a couple of families. Used to deposit us kids at school - certainly get no street cred rocking up in one of them

I'm guessing the Explorer is there because of the Ford-Firestone controversy, but that was due to the tires, not the car itself.

I'd be tempted to agree with the problems with the Model T making a car-driven lifestyle. It's arguably shaped the way people transport themselves today, but has created a heavily oil dependant society that can't last indefinitely and has retarded more initiatives for public tranport, promoting a suburbia lifestyle. Though all that is seen in hindsight, and I also agree that such reasons have no place in this kind of a list.
Fragony, agreed. Anytime I see that car I wonder what kind of lunatic would want to actually pay for something so ugly.

Nope. More politically correct reasons:
Forget about the whole Firestone tire controversy. In its very success, the Ford Explorer is responsible for setting this country on the spiral of vehicular obesity that we are still contending with today.
The thing could have functioned perfectly w/o maintenance for 100k miles and they'd still have it on there.
The Ford Excursion is on there simply because it's bigger than what an average person absolutely needs.
This has to be put on the 50 worst lists of all time list.

I disagree. While I prefer the smaller (more Euro) sports car, I'd feel alot safer knowing that my ma was driving an Explorer. Safety is very important (esp for people who are not the best of drivers :P) and vehicles like the Excursion and Explorer hit it home in that department. I remember this friend of mine was going to this green peace meeting (at which, everybody was a woman) and they were complaining about SUVs and thinking of ways to get rid of them. A little while later a report came out that said your chances of living through a crash in one of them was a lot better than in a minivan or car.
The whole discussion ended abruptly, and most of the women there started driving SUVs. :P
Safety aside, they are handy (sometime necassary) for transporting equiptment, large groups of people, and even for towing. I have never driven an SUV (though I have thought about buying one), but see nothing wrong with driving one. The "evil" emissions that they give off are only marginally greater than a mid-sized car. (I once owned a tank of a car that I'm sure let off a LOT more emissions...good old days:2thumbsup: :P)
Vuk
Safety is about more than mass and height. We've had a couple of threads about it in the Backroom, but trust me, when you factor in rollovers and single-vehicle accidents, SUVs are not statistically safer than sedans. And of course, the driver is the most important piece of safety gear.
Looks like BMW is trying to get a late entry into the Ugly Cars list. Check this thing out: BMW X6 (http://jalopnik.com/cars/frankfurt-auto-show/frankfurt-auto-show-bmw-x6-activehybrid-concepts-298085.php). Looks like a tarted-up Aztec.

SUV's are very unsafe for the other people in collisions though. What happens when a hummer's bumper collides with the driver side of a small car?
I doubt it looks good for the car driver.

It's so funny that they should've included a 1920 Briggs and Stratton Flyer! I went to a farm recently, and in this barn a local peasant had, underneath lots of old dust and farming equipment, this very 1920 Stratton Flyer from the list. Well it was from 1922, but anyway.
The old man tried to sell that piece of junk to me for fifty euro. He said he thought it was a 1970's Korean car or something, but I was onto him and realised it was much older than that, so there was no way I'd part with fifty euro for a car that old. Sneaky bastard, trying to take advantage of me. What did he take me for, some sort of fool from the city?
I don't even have a driver's license, but thought this related article (http://www.theonion.com/content/news/ford_reintroduces_model_t_line) might be of interest. ~;)

You also have to remember that many people drive bicycles. We should not be able to drive anything bigger than a bicycle in case of an accident. ;)
No, really, just like people who drive motorcycles, they make their choice in vehicles. You cannot demand that all vehicles be made the same. The only real problem I can think of is that stupid, selfish people think that they can do whatever dangerous crap they want because they are in a larger vehicle and safer. I have observed this alot.
To be honest with you, I think the far greater problem is semis. Of course most of the semis could be taken off the road if there were more trains. The only problem is that we don't want more trains and the fees for holding things in a warehouse are ridiculous. Take care of that and you take care of the semi issue.

Vuk the idea is to not be extremist but to be reasonable, that's why SUV's are idiotic and unnecessary while bicycles, motorcycles and small cars are okay and gigantic SUV's that outweigh every two other vehicles on the road put together are evil.
Semis are a huge problem, and their drivers are often very unsafe, rushed and tired.
Some sarcasm may appear in this post.

"Extremist"? I always am careful when talking to someone who uses that word. (esp when talking about cars :P)
My car once slid off the highway into the snow. If someone in an SUV didn't stop by, I would have been stuck out on the highway with no cellphone in 40 below weather as my car got buried by the blizzard. I still am thankful that the lady was driving an SUV.
Not everyone limits their driving to office/school/home. A lot of people (including me) do real work, for which a large vehicle (like an SUV or my F150 Super Duty :beam:) is needed. Also, America isn't a huge collection of big cities like Europe, we have a lot of rural land and a lot of people who actually pull their own wieght.
Pardon me if I sound at all sarcastic.

Oh don't worry about sarcasm, I love it, plus I would never take offense to anything said on an online forum.
As an afterthought have you ever been to Vermont? I live there and the terrain consists of relatively small mountains and the winters can be pretty nasty, and though I live near a tiny city (20k) I live on a dirt road in the boonies and I have plenty of experience with cars not doing well in snow. We now drive Subaru's and have had no problems with them, now while they might not be the best at getting you out of a ditch they will definitely do a good job at getting you from point A to point B in horrible weather. I also have no problem with people who do real work having trucks and vans, but I can't see an SUV being better for real work than a truck or van and there are a lot more trucks here than people who do "real work."
Another note that woman would have been able to help you out even if she didn't have an SUV by either calling for help or bringing you to the next gas station. It may have been slightly less convenient and probably cost you a bit because towing is quite expensive from what I've heard, but hey you'd still be saved from the 40 below weather and timberwolves.

Hey, if people want to drive tiny cars that is their choice. They just shouldn't say that I can't drive a large vehicle. I own four very small vehicles (only one of which I ever drive (enless I am taking a girl out :P)) and two large ones. A bigarse F150 and a van. (The van is only used for storage now as I no longer need to transport a lot of people, and I got my truck to do the work it used to do :P) I am not going to sue some one if I am in a no fault accident in my mini because they are driving an SUV. Likewise I wouldn't expect someone in a Mini to sue me BECAUSE I was driving my truck when the accident occured.
I also have no problem with people who do real work having trucks and vans, but I can't see an SUV being better for real work than a truck or van and there are a lot more trucks here than people who do "real work."
Having something that can function as a basic transportation vehicle and a work vehicle is very handy. (I don't own one myself, but people who do have told me that they are very nice to have)

We had to get satellite to get highspeed....Now if we were 20 minutes east or west we'd have highspeed, but we aren't. Heck maybe even ten minutes east....
I wouldn't sue anyone if they were driving a larger car than I was in an accident, that would be a completely idiotic lawsuit, but I think it'd be for the best if people didn't buy large vehicles unless they often use it for hauling large stuff, or I don't know own a boat that they transport semi-regularly or something.
I also think you can manage without a truck, even if you build the occasional wall at home or do regular garden work, you can always get mulch, soil and so on delivered and at least around here it isn't all that expensive.
Before this devolves into a Backroom debate (which we have done before, the thread is in there somewhere), I don't think the point of the Explorers/Hummers/Expeditions being on the list was to say SUVs should be banned. The point the list author is trying to make is that these vehicles have made it fashionable to own a large, wasteful vehicle for basic needs. For every one person that actually needs a SUV/truck in their everyday life, there are 20 others that use them to transport 90 cubic feet of air to and from work. People had pickup trucks and Broncos before the Explorer came out, but these were usually people that needed 4WD and towing capacity. SUVs and light trucks were not meant for everyday use, that is why they had safety and fuel standard exemptions. Explorers were successfully marketed as "everyday" vehicles or alternatives to minivans, and the arms-race was on.

Well then I wouldn't have a problem with you having a truck, I'm mainly opposed to the soccer moms in the suburbs and rednecks living in town with a huge SUV or truck and absolutely no use for it. For most of the younger guys it's just a status symbol/compensation, for the soccer moms I guess it's an attempt to feel safe or something like that, even though they'd be much better off putting a bit of extra energy into driving rather than buying a huge SUV.
I saw more giant, waddling luxury SUVs in Manhattan than I've ever seen here in the sticks. Here's hoping unnecessary road hogs become unfashionable soon.
I have no problem with people owning large vehicles they use. But I find multi-ton commuter vehicles to be in very poor taste.
I agree that people shouldn't go buy a two ton truck to drive to school in, but if they have a reason to buy the vehicle (which many people do) they should be able to. If you campaign to get rid of those big vehicles, you are taking them away from the people who use them. The biggest problem is that most of the people who need them can't afford them. :P

I never said we should ban them either. I've actually used large vans and trucks for work and found them to be very useful, but the number of people with huge trucks and SUV's around here is a lot smaller than the number of people who actually use them, and something like a Hummer is not only a huge gas guzzler but extremely impractical.

I just need to make sure my first car (I drive my mom's right now, oh yeah am I cool!!! ) has AWD or I'll never be able to get home for Christmas, or anything else during the winter for that matter.
These days there's a very good selection of AWD sedans (http://www.nextag.com/Compare-Autos--zzawd+sedansz2703000zB6z5---html). No need to run down to the Hummer dealership. The Subaru Impreza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Impreza) is supposed to be a heck of a fun ride, while also being easy on the pocketbook. And there's always the lemur method -- buying nice AWD cars used (http://www.carsdirect.com/used_cars/vehicle_detail/ul82982166/BMW/325XI).
Bit late to the party here, but...
@ BKS - The new BMWs are hideous, absolutely hideous. Chris Bangle is the worst thing to happen to BMW in a long time. No way I'd drive one of those at all.
re: SUV discussion - I'm guilty. My past two vehicles have been SUVs. Previous was a '96 Honda Passport, because I got it for a steal and it was far more reliable than my Accord which was falling apart. My current ride is a '06 Toyota 4runner, which will pass to my wife in a year or so when the Whackerlings are scheduled to start arriving. I've done a few things to it to help with the mileage, but it still sucks more gas than what I'd like. Meh.
Also, this list is wrong. The first car on the list should be my family's old 92 Toyota Camry. That thing was a pile of junk, I once lost a stoplight race against a Geo Metro. Never heard the end of it either from my two friends. :shame:

Luckily I don't have to buy a car until after my freshman year of college, because many colleges don't let you have a car your first year....
Plus I don't have the money saved, and my first car will almost certainly be used. I don't have the money for a new car, and my parents probably wouldn't give me one, even though they gave my brother one, which he gave his girlfriend and she totaled 8 days later....:sweatdrop:
EDIT: Oh and that Impreza looks pretty sweet, I'm a big fan of Subaru's because the first AWD vehicles we got were Subaru's, and before we got them we usually didn't get home in the winter...Walking in a blizzard isn't fun. And pushing the car up a hill in a blizzard is even less fun.
