In principle yes. In fact, no.

I'll tell you for why: At home we must recycle this, should recycle that, never recycle the other. Very annoying, hard to follow and expensive.

At work nothing is recycled. Vast abouts of card and glass, more probably than our whole street produces, is simply dumped every week.

I recycle as often as possible.

Some forms of recycling make sense, others do not. When paper is recycled as newsprint, it makes sense. When paper is recycled to higher white levels, the amount of bleach involved negates any benefit of recycling.

Recycling is a necessity, but you gotta do it in ways that make economic and environmental sense.

I think recycling should be required, and to that end it should be made easy to separate the trash from the recyclable goods. For example plastic goes in one pile, glass in another, trash in the last.

EDIT: I forgot about paper, that should get its own pile too! And as Lemur says it needs to make economic and environmental sense. Recycling for the sake of recycling is idiotic.

Welcome back Warman. Just so folks don't mistake this thread as spam, how about we expand the conversation?

Do you (anyone):

a. Set your recyclables out for the city to pick up and profit from? or do you

b. Collect your recyclables yourself, and haul them down to the recycle point, to make a few bucks ($1.75 per pound for my aluminum beer cans)?

I do "b".

I wish I could make a small profit from the recycling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bottle_Deposit%2C_Part_1_%28Seinfeld_episode%29)
but the Waste Management group takes it away. I could make a few bucks if I got the direct profit, but alas.

I do "c", which means I drive it to the recycle point, but I don't get money for it.

That's what my parents do. Here they don't give out money for recycling, recycling is what "clean green" Kiwis are expected to do. Though lots of people don't bother.

We have three bins, each which can take different types of waste. Certain type of plastic are allowed, but not others; some tins, but not others; some types of paper but not others...

I then put the three outside and watch two get emptied into the same place to save time for the binmen.

recycling is a bolt-on solution for a bad system. Plastics should be biodegradable - I'm not asking for cold fusion here, they do exist! And then a law so that all plastics used in the sale of food have to use these. Then all waste bar metal and glass can be thrown away with relative ease.

When I come home at 7pm after a long day I generally can't be bothered to remember to wash ot the jar and place them in one bin, check the types of plastic and sort accordingly... I just want to relax before going to sleep.

We do that too, but we can get up to a whopping 5 cents for every bottle of a certain type, meaning almost all soda and beer bottles. It really doesn't add up to much of anything, but hey at least we get money for something right?:laugh4:

Well, we do get money for bottles, beer cans, etc(just about everything that holds stuff you drink). There are recycling machines for those in every grocery store. The price is 1 NOK(about 20 cents) for the smaller bottles(0,5l) and 2,5 NOK(about 40 cents) for bigger bottles(1,5l).

EDIT: The money you get from that is included in the price you pay to buy it. So you don't get more money from recycling, you just don't lose any...

Recycling should be dumped, whosesale. It is a waste of time. Okay, puns intended, but not merely as puns.

Recycling is a fashion, a fad of the times and totally useless. In The Neds we have different bins for all sorts of stuff, but I don't know for what and I dont care. Neither do the cleaning services wo dump the lot in the same landfill anyway. I'll take the occasional 50 euro fine for dumping all my waste in the same bin and dumping said bin in a ditch if the mood takes me. Call it civil disobedience, I know my rights. I'll move to Latin America to get away from the little green men if I have to.

Wow, bad day with the bins, Adrian? You forgot to type, "You kids get off my lawn!"

Wow, bad day with the bins, Adrian? You forgot to type, "You kids get off my lawn!"I did chase some off my lawn. Turned out they were my own kids. Bad day all over, Lemur, you are right.

PS What really urinates me off are the government campaigns that say 'a clean environment starts with you'. No, it doesn't. It starts with better government. Individuals don't enact good laws, grant take-off subsidies for best practices or fine the worst transgressors. Only governments do, or used to.
