View Full Version : If You\'re Feeling Polish Today...
I wanted to try playing as a "oddball" nation, so I went Polish. I have to say that this is a very, very hard country to play. I was surrounded all the time. I managed to make aliances and keep everybody friendly-- but expansion was out. I managed to grab Bohemia when a German general rebelled-- but that was IT.
Things got even more depressing when all my heirs suddenly vanished. Are they dying of plague or what? The end result of hours of effort is the same old Poland, everybody's pal-- always a bridesmaid, never a bride.
I finally got so frustrated I just gathered all my army together and attacked Russia, in an attempt to escape to Finland in the corner and maybe hide out there for a while. I don't know what the rest of the plan was...
Anyway, I got to Finland, and was promptly arrested and sent back to Poland after paying the 13075 florins in ransom. While I was gone, my peasants had successfully defended the homeland against the Russians and I found out that a peasant was now my highest ranking general (I auto-resolved some battles and kept winning).
So I gave up. No generals (my kingdom for a third rank general!) No heirs. No territory. I'd like to know how the Poles can win this. They remind me of the Mori in the original STW-- but worse.

I'm playing as the Poles now. I've gotten about 40 years in and have taken a lot of provinces- I have ports on both the Baltic and Black Seas. I also strech across to the edge of the board bounded by Novgorod to the north and the Byzantines to the South. I should be able to take on Novgorod and after that Hungary. By then, I hope to be big enough to expand even more. Maybe the Danes. If I get that far I will be happy!

Yeah I started out playing as Poland, I stopped because of somewhat boredom, and am now playing as Byzantines, Spanish, and for a little while the English. For some reason, everyone wanted to ally with me. I only played them till about 1130 though. They're an alright faction, just not very specialized, at 1130 anyway...maybe so later, I can't judge because I barely played any of it. I am part Polish though, so I wanted to rule Europe with them! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Poland is a blast. I started out very strong and conquered every neutral province I could get my hands on early before the HRE, Novgorod and the Byzantines got their grubby paws on them.
Having accomplished this, I've been building up my infrastructure and diplomacy and then Novgorod attacked me!. Silly boyars! I have three times their industrial capacity. I've just about finished laying waste to all of the Russias. Only Finland left. I stretch from Novgorod to the Black Sea (Kiev and Moldavia) and stretch out on the Baltic as far as Pomerania.
Hungary is next on my list - once I make sure I am prepared for the Mongols (as if one can truly prepare for such a thing).
I've also started putting ships in the Baltic and the Black Sea.
This game is fantastic.
I could wish for a bit better AI in the battles. I can usually win (lots of multiplayer experience from STW). However, there have been a few close scrapes and even a few losses. I can't wait till I come up against a REAL enemy. So far the neutrals, the rebels and the Novgorods have been it.

The Poles are darn fun. I just took "lovinia" or something like that, up by Novgorod.
Anyway, 6 years of rebellion followed. I kept a rounded count and close to 5500 peasant revolutionaries died at my hands...
Thankgoodness for the revolts though, quashing them was my major source of income for a bit. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
love those land seizures...
