so...anybody found anything useful for a long term commitment? he's not so loyal (obviously) but the game won't let me bestow titles or governorships to him. I have yet to place a unit in his banner and have him replaced.

soly,
most of the mercs i've used were for short term. i wasnt even aware that you couldnt assign them titles or positions. interesting. it might be interesting to have these guys slowly convert to full citizenship over time. maybe they even can. dont know.
i do know that some of them are VERY good fighting units. i dont know if you can retrain them either, but that also might be interesting.
my guess is that the game simply always treats them as mercenaries with no chance of upgrading in any manner, but i'd love to be proven wrong on that one.

The only absolute is that there are no absolutes.
Yeah, DD said that mercs can not be upgraded or reinforced. But I would be nice to be able to retain good mercs over time, cost should stay though. There are plenty of mercs that became citizens (think about the Varangians in Byzantium).
As Spain I just hired some Kwaramzian cav in Toulouse that I plan to ship to Egypt. The mercs are a nice feature. Without mercs I would never have had a siege train so soon.

I gave him my Buck Tooth Daughter. He's seemed pleased, but he stayed a Merc. Sucks.

There was oft a time in the foreign lands far from home when we would rely on those not common to us, brandishing curved swords or the shine of Italian armor.
My men were not fond of these mercenaries within our troops, but alas as they saw the enemy flee before their charge they knew what was meant by strength in numbers. As long as the spoils were plentiful these nomads were welcomed into our masses.
Mixed bretheren under a common banner...
thus became the horde...

Can you run out of Mercs? I hired alot but now it seems I can't hire anymore. Is htere a limit?
Thanks and be careful out there....
