There is a 'Scottish Inn' near where I live... But, I don't see the lads and lasses workin' there wearin' kilts! GAH!

And, the manager is not even named 'Angus'! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/eek.gif

GAH!

After work, I'll head over there to see if I can hire some mercenaries... maybe some Alan Mercenary cav? Or, some gallowglasses (sounds like something you buy at Lenscrafters http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/eek.gif ) for a few dinars... and launch a pre-emptive raid on my neigbor's kids, who I suspect of being supporters of the worthless French curs camping in Mercia...

GAH!

... I shudder to offer anything historical about Scottland when the word "braveheart" appears in the address...

Two key things they didn't go go into above: Schiltrons and the marshy nature of the area (bad for horsies). Schiltrons are kind of like Pike Phalanx of old (bad news for horsies to charge into). Especially when the ground is soggy and the horsies can't get up a full head of steam.

Nice Map:

swooshers,

i've played the battle of stirling in the historical battles of mtw. was a good fight. the clansmen did well, but eventually lost. they did kill 2 to 1, however and made a very good show of it. i'd have beaten them too if it wasnt for the fact that it took some time to get my guys over the bridge after the english routed. by the time i did, the english had rallied and caught me still crossing...it was almost like they had planned it and ambushed me.

the highlanders fought well on the bridge, with archer and x-bow support from the back. the scottish cav/knights were pretty miraculous. of the 20 men in that unit, i didnt lose a one on the bridge. it was only when they crossed the bridge first, chasing the english, that the english nailed em with some spears in a pincer move. aye, t'was a sad sight indeed. with the knights broken, we were slowly pushed back across the bridge and eventually lost the day, but not our honor. the final tally showed a 2 to 1 kill ratio in our favor, with the english having a negative 139 valor score and my brave lads showing over 5000! t'was a proud moment.

K.

Can you use that formation of Wallaces where you put all your Schiltrons in small circles?
This was really effective and I think he used it at stirling...

Oh and by the way can the historical battles be won by using the tactics that were used originally? If so Stirling will be just camping http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Up the Scots!

I can tell you a little about the historical Bannockburn battle in MTW.

I beat all three singles at least once on the normal level, but for me I thought that Bannockburn was the hardest by far. It took me about 6 or 7 tries before I nailed it.

Robert the Bruce only has 3 sixty man units of highlanders, a single sixty man unit of peasants, 2 one hundred man units of spearmen, and his own contingent of 30 or so mounted knights. That's a total of 470 men.

Edward has about 700 or 800 mounted knights, and 240 crossbowmen. At the the start the main force of the Scots are standing out on open flat ground in no particular formation with the English knights already bearing down on them.

The Bruce and his little band are halfway across the map with the English almost between him and his forces. I have no idea if this is historically correct, but I suspect that the developers set the battle up this way to give it some degree of difficulty.

The Scots evidently have a higher morale value, but it is still very easy for them to get overwhelmed by the superior numbers of the English. I finally solved it by racing all of the main force of troops into a grove of trees that was about 200 yards behind there position. I could just barely get them there and turn them as the English knights hit.

We are always being told that cavalry is at a disadvantage in the woods, so I thought this might just give me the edge I needed, and it did. In the mean time I was dancing Robert the Bruce all over the battlefield to avoid getting him trapped or swarmed, and I even manage to get a few licks in on the Crossbowmen. Edward finally broke and ran, and all of his troops followed.

I am afraid to go back and try it on hard or expert, and I am quite pleased to settle for a victory on normal.

Kraellin has already given you the scoop on Sterling, but by the way, the other single historical battle is-Hastings and it is huge. There are two allied armies as big as yours. Surprisingly, I didn't have any major slow downs as I thought I would with 5 or 6 thousand troops on the battle field.

I think that all of the extra system tweaking that I have been doing has finally paid off. That and I finally realized that like a total dufus, I still had FSAA turned on when I thought I had turned it off.

Cheers

In bannockburn I routed the enemy easily when I killed eddie in the first few moments, so the enemy ran away with their king dead.

In stirling my men fought for some 45 min on the bridge and i eventually won. GREAT FUN!!

Anybody beat fred's campaign, tell be how to beat the fourth battle.
