Question on 1.2 patch

Hey guys I got Medieval 2 total war for my birthday a little while back as a digital download, and I never bothered with the patch till now. I decided I wanted to play with my friend and hes using the 1.2 patch which I've downloaded and verified is a correct version and good file. I tried to patch it to a 1.0 Clean install of the brand new game. It unzips and starts the installer but then it says that it "Can not find any version of Medieval 2 total war" and that I should install it. I'm at a dead end with that though because the game is installed at the default path name. Is there something im doing wrong or missing?

I'mno expert but if you go on the SEGA.com website they offer a different patch for the downlaood version of the game.
