The way I understand it, a unit gains honour through battle experience. The higher the honour the better the performance of the unit.

I know units start with different morale settings (reflecting their likelihood of routing) and that palaces can increase this.

Does a unit that increases its honour, also increase its morale? Or is it that being better fighters they are less likely to be in a situatuon where a rout might occur?

A lot man. Try this while in home http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Take a h9 wm and one h0 YA and then order the monk unit to attack it. The YA will flee before they enage in battle but take a h9 Ya the other time and they will fight a bit that wm unit. to cut it short yes http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

If you believe this table http://home.soneraplaza.nl/qn/prive/k.ypma/units.html which is for H2 units, then morale increases by +2 for every +1 increase in honor. This is consistent with my playing experience.
