This past weekend, I bought Kingdoms, the expansion pack for MTW2.
I am no historian by any measure (I’m an engineer by trade so history study in college was limited to the required US history and Western Civ), so I cannot speak to, nor do I know how bad is the historical inaccuracies in the individual campaigns that are part of this expansion pack. The Americas campaign does not need a historian to know that a good deal of “imagination” has to be employed in order to play it. Anyway, the point of this post is not to debate historical inaccuracies or to discuss the crazy ludicrous-ness of the Americas campaign.
The reason for this post is to comment of one aspect of the expansion that I find most intriguing. Scope.
Several years ago, there was a TBS (turn based strategy) (I know that Sega calls this a RTS but it is not a real time strategy game) called Genghis Khan for the old Nintendo. I spent many hours playing this classic game. With out going into detail about how it worked (being TBS enthusiasts you may be familiar with it anyway) I will say that one of the things that I liked about GK that the TW series lack is the option to unite then conquer.
In GK, the option was given to the player to play the “world conquest” game in which several factions where selectable, or you could start by uniting Mongolia then conquering the world.
I never did conquer the world, but I did manage to unite Mongolia through a series of military and diplomatic victories (it seems that diplomacy was better in GK, but it has been so long I may not be remembering correct). After Mongolia was united, the game automatically changed to the world conquest scenario with me in command of a very powerful Mongolia. I took a break from the game and never went back.
In Kingdoms, I am currently playing the Britannia campaign and endeavoring to unite the British Isles under Welsh leadership. I like this concept. I like that the scope is limited.
I wish that there was a way to play the Romani as an example and only focus on bringing under SPQR control the Italian peninsula, and then have the game open for the world conquest scenario.
The Italian peninsula would be split into several smaller provinces or regions of control under the SPQR campaign, and once these were brought under Roman control, the scenario would change to the current world campaign and the current 6 or 7 provinces would be used.

I think it is sadly impossible in RTW (or M2TW, for that matter) engine

Now that would be COOL!!!!!!!!

That way you will no longer have to worry about WAITING for the AI to get strong and for the reforms to happen.

hehe GK

The damn mongol horse archers were too overrated. Too easy to conquer the world with them. A's in all of the categories save 1, which was a B... charge i think it was.

The best challenge was going from west to east. Really an uphill battle that way.

They had a C for charge :2thumbsup: and yes they were extremely powerful with maybe only Samurai and Elephant that could challenge them :smash:

Oh and that was an awesome game for the time
