This topic I am trying to find how one can tell if a province is good/profitable for farming. I have not seen on the campaign map anything like in STW where a province has "rich fertile soil" so does anyone know how you can tell?
i was wondering this too, i can't tell where i'm getting my money from...trade, farms...etc....

-All knowledge is worth having-
Click on a province and bring up the build queue. Right click on the farming upgrade and the panel on the right tells you how much of an increase in income you'll get. The increases are quite small considering the cost of the upgrade. From what I can see it takes more than 10 years to recoup the cost of a 20% farming upgrade even in the most favorable circumstances.

The farm upgrades are expensive but in a game lasting many decades it's probably worth it in the long run as soon as money permits and all of the other pressing needs are met. (Spies, good troops, fleets, etc.)
A regional leader present and having good acumen makes a big difference in cash output too.

I'm playing Poland and for some provinces I will recoup my investments in 3-4 years. Cost for +20% is 600, and I get increase per year of 136. Cost for +40% is 1000 and I get increase per year of 326. Cost for +60% is 1500 and increase per year is around 600.
These are my PRIZE provinces of course. Some give you much less- so I use those provinces to up my technology.

Yes but DragonCat, the true cost for the 60% is actually 3100 (600+1000+1500) so it takes a little more time, but still in a good time indeed.
That's not the increase. That's the total farm value. Also, it is profitable to build the 20% farmland in many territories even the sucky ones for every new king to get the bonus to agricultural income virtue.

Also, i think its true that you cant build a horse training place unless you have at least the 20% farmland, am i right?
Yes. Horse farmer requires 20% farmland.
GAH!
Ned Flanders has a high output plantation. Must have mechanized peasants or something. I've seen it with over 1000 florin income.

Basically, at the risk of over-simplifying:
put farmland in your most productive provinces as early as you can afford it.
If you can afford it, build as many farmlands as you can once a young new king ascends the throne until he gets the +% to agricultural income virtue. Even in provinces with poor farmlands, it is going to be worth since if the king gets the bonus, it it going to affect all provinces whle the king is still alive.
I build lots of 20% farmland because of that and most of my provinces have it already.
Hey think of it this way those upgrades can pay for the upkeep of an army. Then when you put a good governer in thier its even better.
It all evens out at the end.
It seems that since there so many more harvests in MTW compared to STW, farming upgrades are four times more important.
That is good news for teching whores... Like me. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Good point Kraxis!
Let me simplify things. I have had an agressive agricultural policy and I just had a year where I was the richest faction - ahead of the Byzantines who are doing VERY well thank you.

I found this out last night by accident. click on the finances button that shows income and expenses of all provinces. Click around on it and you can toggle the display so it will give a breakdown of all sources of income per province (trade/farm/mining).
