Hey, just a few q's I need answering which are pretty important for personal reasons.

1)Is the end date editable (i.e. I could have campaigns end in 1857 instead for example)

2)How far back can the date go? I'm making a Roman MOD and obviously I need it to be in the 100's

3)How easy is the game to MOD? Will I be able to run through it smoothly?

4)What can I edit? Seen as I have no programming skills I can only really edit what's in the text files.

5)When ym HUGE Roman MOD is finished what would CA do if I sent it to them (Just curious)

6)Is the Brit release date still on coarse?

One more q, have the text files from the demo changed at all? If they haven't I can begin modding....

Hi there,

Quick answers where I can give them:

1) End date not negotiable, sorry. All games end in 1453.

2) Start date is specified in startpos file (campmap\startpos\early.txt, for example). So you can go back as far as you want.

3) How easy to mod? Varies considerably... here are my impressions of it:
- new battlemaps: easy
- new unit stats: easy (except modding the projectile stats which will be in the patch)
- new unit graphics: tricky but just about doable
- changing how the AI works: limited but doable; you can influence how the stratmap AI purchases units, and how the battlemap AI likes to use them (see earlier posting by EatColdSteel for details)
- new stratmap: not at the moment (editing the existing graphic is possible, see a message by Target in an earlier thread for how)
- new historical battles or campaigns: easy (see various people's breakdowns of the file format)
- new sounds, music, etc - most likely you'll have to replace existing ones, but that can be done
- changing the menu 'skin' - no (you can probably change some of the individual graphics, but all the text will stay in the same place)

4) All the above is moddable by changing text files or editing / creating graphics. There's no possibility of modding the game by coding anything, but you can provide different data for the existing code to use.

5) As far as I know, we don't distribute or officially endorse any mods by the community, but obviously we haven't any problems with people making them http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif So sending it to us wouldn't really get you anything.

6) We haven't any influence over the ship dates, but assuming the UK version is the same as the US version (which it is) then I don't see why it shouldn't ship approximately on time. My guess is that it's been produced in the States and is currently being shipped in vast numbers and as cheaply as possible across the Atlantic http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hope that helps you out a bit. More detailed information about modding has already appeared in the Mods forum on this site, and I expect Target and I will be documenting stuff as time passes.

I had totally forgotten to ask about the projectile stats, gald to see they will be available for modding, could be good to make a rapid fire crossbow unit http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif.

Can you give a list of what can be modded for ranged weapons Gil?
e.g. range, damage, area of effect, reload speed etc..

Excellent, I can edit everything I thought I could, good news that.

The map textures (and much other stuff) is in the TGA format now rather than .BIF or any other unfriendly format.

You know what that means? Map textures are fully editable in any good image editing program like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. And what does that mean? It means custom textures. If God has given you awe-inspiring graphics editing skills you can make your Roman Total War a total reality... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

They're in TGA now? That rules, now Roman Total War will be even better than I'd planned.

Oh, if GilJay is still there for q5 I meant, would you play on it at all? Just like to give something back to the company.

Are you back from hols yet Gil?

So this means that we can make the game last as long as we want (sort of) by editing the start date? I guess the only problem would be that certain events might not trigger correctly that way (ie it might take you 1200 turns to see a message from the Early era), but good news anyway!

PS - someone correct me on this if I am wrong

Make sure you put elephants in your mod. Plenty of elephants.

NagatsukaShumi

Elephants? I highly doubt whether Lord Krazy and his friend Lord Blackadder could do it or anyone else for that matter, sorry. And it's about the Romans in Europe dude, not in other places if they ever encountered Elephants then.

What period of Roman history are you modding?

Lord Krazy

We can do Elephants,it will just take longer.
It's more of a case that there are only
25 hours in a day, if u don't believe me
research the file structur yourself.
So nag is right the Lord's wont be produceing Elephants untill we finish
all the "easy" stuff first.And I don't
care that Hannibal had them,he didn't have
to draw a thousand frames to get'em.
Hope this gives you a better idea of whats
going down. C ya
