Took a break from my Romani campaign and am playing Casse now.
It's kind of cool...

Yeah, what's cool about it?
I found Sweboz a lot of fun, gave me the proper "barbarian" feeling, marching a lot of barechested, ill-equipped troops around. Finally met my victory condition around 190 b.c after taking out Casse, Adui, Averni, Getai and of course the Romani.
After that I realized it would be bloody impossible to expand more because of lack of public order buildings for the Sweboz. I think the max they can squeese out of buildings is around 60% and 1/3rd of that is health which leads to larger populations in cities and therefore more squalor.
Now I am trying out the Romani, which is fun.

Wow, that was a fantastic reason to start a new thread. :dizzy2: That's what I created the EB TAVERN for...
Anyways, the Casse are fun, although I haven't played too much with the "barbarian" factions.
I have to say, since I downloaded EB I've only played with the Romani. What can I say, red is the best colour, ever! But last night I tried something very left field. I loaded a Sweboz campaign. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the music and interface are wonderful. They really do help to create the whole barbarian, bare knuckle, chest thumping experience of a bunch of filthy Sweboz (few anti-squalor buildings) trotting around northern European forests lopping heads off the whiny weaklings standing in their path. It's also a tad challenging getting anything resembling an economy off the ground.
This experience has inspired me to do two things: a) try out some of the other factions to enjoy what I've missed so far and b) to write an AAR. But these AARs do take a little time and effort, to be conservative.
I must still give the Casse a bash. Perhaps I'll use the Sweboz. ;-)

Im still in my Casse campeign and the Sweboz are too afraid to attack me:laugh4:
Does Casse and Sweboz have the same music? If not I gotta try Sweboz sometime.
Red is the best colour. But not when im playing Casse.. That annoying red army keeps attacking me

I can't get away with the Barbarian factions. I feel much more comfortable with the "civilised" Hellenes.
The uppity Romani maybe just qualify as civilised. Maybe.

That's the main reason why I have never really been too into the barbarian factions...I love the idea of leading organized, well armed troops into battle. The barbarians with their naked warriors don't really fit into that romantic ideal.
I do think I'm going to try them though...they're probably easier than the steppe factions anyways.

don't think I'll ever be a big barb fanatic because of the civ limitations with the barbarians.
sorry if the thread wasn't as deep or robust as some people thought it should be I didn't mean to be annoying or anything, but, I was getting ready to launch the game and play some more casse and I was really enjoying a different aspect of the game and thought I'd post and share how much I was enjoying it :)
as to what is so cool...I don't know precisely. I've been playing romani so long that starting with the casse and having to spend a lot of time focussing on infrastructure and only focussing on a small little region of the world to start with... it was just a slightly diferent speed and I was enjoying myself.........
I wish there was a way to multiplay the campaign and not just the battles...I could have my son play against me on the other computer.. He could be aduei (?sp) I could be aveni (sp) and we could ally and whoop some factions before turning on each other.....
come to think of it, gk's world campaign was multiplayer wasn't it?

:beam: oh, I see!
cool: a total variety of options concerning the main campaign with different factions, from units to buildings to expansion.
:eyebrows:
I hate the Casse but I can't say why or else the EB guys will yell at me.

I hate Baktria, and I'm not afraid to admit it. (It has to do with their crazy expansion in RTR and EB0.7x.)
I hate Casse because of their bodyguard and whenever I say that you EB guys get angry.
I hate the Lusotannan because they stole one of my (Roman) settlements after it revolted. :'(
They look like an interesting faction to play, though....

They are definitely not the best unit. But I can find them some job to do:whip:
I hate the Romans for playing on my back yard (Belgea)
"What did I tell you? No spamming legions in my backyard!"

Uh, oh....
:surrender: :hmg:
Time to run away! :eeeek:
The reason I dislike the barbarians is because there is limited selectability and huge amounts of uniformity. Running around with armies consisting of 2 units for a good portion of the game is not what I consider fun. Utilizing skirmishers, cavalry, and infantry all at the same time while getting lots of unit diversity as the game progresses leads to a replayable campaign to me. I just gave up on a Lustonnan campaign after I conquered the Iberian peninsula and realized Ambraka infantry and cavalry as far as their units go. This may be partially a constraint of the game engine I understand but the more developed ones definitely bring me joy. And I just can't get enough of Epeiros, I've probably played 4 campaigns since 0.7x. Once disbanding Taras and taking over Greece, once sticking with Taras and having a huge power struggle with Rome and I tried to keep Makedonia and KH diplomatically subdued. You can't beat Elephants either. One faction I have never played is Bakria but they do seem cool, just not a big fan of traveling 3 turns to get to a destination, although that is a strategic difference. Indo-greek units sound promising also. Wow... was this topic originally about Casse? :) Sorry, I'm chatty tonight -.-
I know what your saying from an aesthetic point of view. That is, 'barbarian' armies were certainly not uniform. There's nothing you can do about it, though. EB2 will fix this, I suppose.
I hate Rome and Ptolemaics, because of their AI expansion in some versions.

I recently started up a campaign with Baktria, my Romani campaign was way too easy.
Baktria is fun :2thumbsup: It's tough, I was barely 5 years into the game when both AS and Saka went to war with me. I had grabbed 2 lightly defended villages and my economy is crap.
I am using a money script mod so Saka was coming at me again and again with stacks of 4-8 units. And they were totally spanking me!!! I hate them. I finally found a way to deal with them and that is to never attack them!
When I started fighting on me terms it took me 10 years to put together a decent army and take their capital which was just north of me. After that they have to travel much further to attack me.
AS on the other hand has become more aggresive in the recent years and as they are not fighting the Ptoleimons, I am their prime target
But what can I say, it's fun and Baktria has such a variety of reginal units as well....and kataprachts and elephants....mwuhahaha.

ok, after playing awhile, I hate the chariots. Maybe if there was a way to get them to better do what you want them to do but as they are, they are just an agravation most of the time.

I dunno, I found them quite interesting and useful to play around with. Not as straightforward as, say, the Brihentin guards of the Continentals, but quite characterful.
And that was without the suggested stat mod.
Kinda clunky to maneuver though, especially in settlements, but then them's the breaks with chariotry.

I guess that I don't know how to use them.
I try to use them like equites romani/extraordinari as "shock troop" type units.
You know, pound into an engaged unit from behind then pull back, or scatter missle units, or chase down fleeing units.
I can't seem to get the chariots to do any of those effectively.
one thing i find them useful and extremely entertaining is when two chariot teams engage eachother, they like do driveby's, especially if they still have javalins left and they are set to fire at will, and then you alt+rightclick the enemy, its extremely entertaining for me to watch.

Chariots aren't killing machines, their role is to harass and disrupt the enemy. Their melee attack is low, but their main pro's are their missiles and their morale function: their presence scares the enemy and encourages allies. The best way to use them is to get them behind enemy lines and pelt your enemy with javelins. Only charge when the enemy is on the point of routing, as they simply don't have a melee attack to speak of. Stay away from light troops: your bulky chariots are very vulnerable to missiles and light troops also get an anti-chariot bonus in melee.
You can also use your chariots to disrupt charging infantry. Simply order your chariots to move through the enemy infantry. The enemy formation will be disordered and they will have lost momentum, making them vulnerable for a counter charge.
Yeah, I was really annoyed with the Casse chariots for my first battle or two. The lack of maneuverability combined with their ridiculously soft armor just frustrated me to no end.
And then I discovered the joys of formation disruption and morale debilitation. Now they're my most fun unit to use. I just wait until the melee clash locks up and then I run the chariots back and forth just behind the enemy units, barely clipping them. Their lines disintegrate like toast in the pool.
As an alternate strategy, I decided to be really ballsy with my faction leader and I had him lead my entire army's charge with the chariots. He just careened through about 16 ranks of enemy formation and my chargers followed immediately behind him and exploited the glaring gaps he'd made. I think he only had about half his chariots left at the end, but man, it was a lot of fun to watch. Battle was over in roughly ten seconds once the initial charge went off.

Back when I played my first Casse campaign there one day turned up this stack of those pesky proto-Scots to pester my humble abode, so naturally I sallied ASAP. Turned out it was great fun driving the chariots in circles around the bunched-up infantry, counter-clockwise of course so the crews' shields helped absorb their javelins while those lasted. By the time my infantry trudged up the hapless savages had expended all their ammunition (to fairly little gain - those chariots are actually fast enough movers that if you time it right you can partially evade the volley), had suffered a fair bit of attrition from the return fire, and were quite tired from fruitless attempts to catch the noisy machines.
Naturally, once the infantry engaged them I started smashing the chariots into the backs of any suitably preoccupied-looking units which did not exactly help their morale one bit. There was actually more of the blighters than I had infantry so I also had to employ the chief-chariotry to preoccupy any spare ones trying to flank - a simultaneous converging hit-and-run attack by no less than three big columns of chariots from all directions messed them up but good, anti-chariot bonuses or no. :2thumbsup:
