Okay, had a rather odd experience earlier today w/ XL mod. I had noticed once earlier that the Hungarians can crusade in the mod. So, I decided I'd just do a quick check to see what kind of knight they got for the crusade. So, I started a Hungarian/late game to do a quick check.

To start off, I bribed Wallachia and Moldavia, and subsidized them while waiting for the crusade. Got the crusade ready, and targeted Levidia, which the Mongols owned. After starting it, the mongols preempted me and forced me to retreat to the keep in Moldavia. When the crusade passed through, they retreated from the province. I keep going forward, and win a battle to gain Levidia. However, the Mongols swept in behind me, and took Moldavia back with troops from Volhynia. So, my crusade is stranded. The mongols bring troops from all over, and I lose the battle. I figured my crusade was done. However, lo and behold, at the EXACT same time, England was crusading against the Mongols too. The same turn my troops would have been captured, they took Lesser Khazar completely, due to the lack of a fort.

So my crusade actually ends up on the wrong side of Levidia, with the english crusade summarily moving on to Georgia, while my meager reamnants cower in Lesser Khazar. This is what I didn't get.

For some reason, the province still belongs to England, even though I am the only one with troop in it. To even further confuse matters, a couple turns later, the English were excommunicated. Shouldn't I have at least taken the province then, while my crusade was on its "holy mission"? Anyone else have something like this happen?

Oh, and the reason there are rebels in Levidia and Moldavia is because the Mongols had a bit of a civil war after pushing my crusade into Lesser Khazar.

That's pretty darned odd, greaterkhaan. I wonder if it had to do with the timing of the English Crusade, perhaps? I'm not sure. :inquisitive:

The english crusade took the province and moved on, your beaten crusade retreated luckily into it, as it would into any other catholic province (for a crusade it counts as a friendly province. If it'd been surrounded by horde provinces the crusade would have been done for.). You are now basically holding the province for the english but you can't take the province, even if it's empty as crusades cannot just invade and take rival catholic faction's provinces unless they're excommunicated, and you declare a crusade or make war against them, which you haven't, so you're effectively "just passing through".
