GAH!
Vanya has a general named Don Diego de Escobedo.
He started out in Castile, and launced the attack on Cordoba that culminated with the fall of that lucrative province. He then moved on to capture Morrocco, and proceeded to march all the way to Cyrenaica. He executed all the captured men in battle unless the enemy general was taken -- only then did he spare them for the sake of ransom.
Now, he sits in Cyrenaica awaiting the go-ahead for the invasion of Egypt, which are currently my allies.
He started with zero dread rating, and is now a 7! GAH! The last two battles he fought, the enemy ran away in panic at the very sight of him approaching! Barely a blade was drawn when the flood gates openned! GAH! But, he is constantly drunk.
So, the legend of Drunken Master lives on... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Clearly, this man has one of Bacchus' flagons... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/eek.gif
GAH!
Sjakihata Akechi: No, DK is my nick name in real life and not the abbreviation of Denmark. I'm in England and therefore get MTW in three days :P
Thoguh I do feel your pain in having to wait a further week http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
Vanya: Arfage! I want a general just like that when it turns up. A drunken tyrant http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Howcome does it take a week ekstra for Scandinavia? heck it would be quicker if me took the boat to England, bought the game, and sailed back again, then it would take perhaps two days...

GAH!
You mean there aren't any of them $99 round trip flights from your country to England, which is practically next door?
GAH!
No personal jet?
GAH!
Vanya offers to send you His legedary dingy. Using this tough rowboat, Vanya has crossed the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. He has sailed past the North Pole. He has circumnavigated the world many times over. And all of that while carrying His white stallion on the dingy with him the whole time!
So you KNOW its a sturdy mofo! GAH!
If you want it, just drop by and pick it up. Sure it means you have to get yourself over to America and ROW it back across the Atlantic... but heck... you want a freebie or what? (There is no delivery service... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/eek.gif )

My favorite general Ive had was for the Byzantines...
Prince (and later Emperor) Romanus... He had a dread rating of 9, a command rating of 8, and as Emperor an influence rating of 9. Some V&Vs included: Risk taker, Blood Lover, Merciless, skilled attacker, and the violent tendancies one.
Quite often, when he would take the field with an army, the enemy would just pick up and leave without a fight. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

My two favorite generals are brothers. The lesser of the two is Lord Comnenus, Duke of Armenia. It was he who defeated the Horde in Georgia, slaughtering over 200 prisoners to encourage the last cavalry archers to flee the field when his exhausted army could only pursue at a walk. He has a command rating of 8 & dread of 7. He seems to have suffered a military setback very early in his career because he has a reputation as a Good Runner, but he is a Skilled Attacker with No Mercy. Unfortunately, this is supplemented with a Murderous Temper so that he is a danger to his own countrymen as well. In the portrait, he appears to have a bad skin condition.
His brother is Lord Comnenus, King of Naples. Piety is on the wane in Byzantium, because a rating of 4 makes him my most pious general. It was 7 Dread & 9 Command which enabled him to exterminate the treacherous Sicilians in a glorious battle on Malta, from which he recently returned to his lands. Not only is he a Skilled Attacker, but a Skilled Defender as well, all with No Mercy. His Acumen is 7, so he one of my better governors & is quite a Builder. Partly is is due to the fact that he is Friedly, but I suspect much is due to the efforts of his retainers, for when he is not on the battlefield, he is always Dead Drunk.
I hope this little diversion helps you to bide the time until you have the game. Rule well.

If I could interrupt this thread for a second...
exactly how does a King or a heir's acumen work?
You can't assign them as a lord of a country...
does the game automatically make them the leader if they're in the country?

This is actually a darned good question. What i'm guessing is that a king's acumen affects all the provinces under your control, while the acumen of heirs is there simply for your own edification (and for helping you decide which of your heirs should live to be king and which should not).
Remeber also that some generals may have royal blood, but may also have titled bestowed upon them.

No. This much i'm almost certain of; heirs and kings are automatically the military leaders of any army they're in, but dukes (or lords or what have you) retain their authority.
Another interesting thing i noticed is that a governor doesn't have to be physically present in the province he's been given in order for the province to receive acumen bonuses.

That's what I thought http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Thanks. But one thing: while kings are automatically the leaders of the army, heirs are not. The highest general is the leader, not the heir http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

True, but you do get other bonuses if he's there. Mainly, his dread affects loyalty if he's present http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif (Make a high dread general the leader of a nearly-revolting country, and you'll see it turn happy right before your eyes if he's there http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif)
One thing I notice that if you leave the governor in the state that he is governing and with the additional that he is the highest rank in the region, he usually pick up some of the good V&V like: Builder (great builder), Organise, some more that I forgot.
The highest rank general in the region usually pickup some good V&V.
You can give heirs title and/or governor status if you like. But if he become the King, he will leave the title and you can reassign the title to someone else.
The King will automatically be assign as army commander in the region. Otherwise, the highest rank general will lead the army. If the rank is tide, the general who has higher noble class of troop will command. If the troop class is also tide, then what will happen? I don't know.
The V&V and stats of the King will effect all regions in the kingdom and also all generals serving him. The further away the region (or general) is, the less effect it will recieve, especially if land and sea way is also cut off.
The governor V&V and stats will have the direct and bigest impact on the region that he is governing, especially if he is in the region.
There are titles higher than governor but I haven't have any experience with those yet. There is no explaination in the manual either.

One of my princes had the vice of cowardice which is -9 to morale so i wanted to kill him off. well i sent him up against a rebel army of about 300 men. (spearmen, archers, and mounted bodyguard units) He wiped out the bodyguard unit single handed. Then proceeded to kill about 100 archers and about 30-40 spearmen by himself. After the battle I ended up keeping him. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

He was to afraid to run... I wonder if having to low a morale clocks it around to the other side?
not sure but i think his command was a 6 or 7. The command rating is also their ability in actual combat too i guess.
Yes it gives a Valour for every two Commands. So Coward and Commandlevel 6 gives -6 to morale in all... not good at all, surprisingly he held out.
But is he useful in any other manner (I would not send him into battle again, -6 morale... uhhhh!)? Good Acumen? Good Dread perhaps?
I had him executed as an example to the other princes.

I have two stories of generals I've enjoyed the way they played out. I'll share the one that's the most interesting.
This is the sad tale of Prince Charles, one of the many heirs to the weak throne upon which King Phillipe of France sat. Many of his brothers, like their father, but had a deep streak of yellow running down their spines. Again and again the royal generals would snatch defeat from victory by turning tail and running, even when not in danger. France lacked good generals in its contiguous provinces.
Along comes Prince Charles. Unlike his God-fearing family, Charles was something of a radical. He outwardly enjoyed the physical attention of other men and boys and often would speak out against what he saw as contradictions and faults of the Church. His flamboyant nature is most likely why Phillipe could never get any king to allow their daughters to marry his deviant son.
Whether it was another sign of his defiance or it was pity or empathy, Charles decided to take as a wife his older sister, who had spent years trying to find a suitor. While the royal family tried to cover this, Charles was already attracting attention and soon everyone had added his incestuous relationship to the list of his known vices.
When the Holy Roman Empire, declared war on France, Phillipe saw his chance to potentially remove this stain on his bloodline. Charles was given the task of leading a counter-attack on the HRE lands, starting with Lorraine. To this task he was deliberately given a short-handed army, with the hopes he'd get himself killed.
He didn't. In fact, he took Lorraine with scant casualties. He personally lead the charge that broke the morale of the defenders. He gathered his men and prepared to continue his campaign when word came to him that the Holy Roman Empire's troops were ransacking France, destroying the French forces they came across. Leaving the smallest of garrisons at Lorraine, he returned home and his forces, bolstered by the survivors they liberated from the beseiged cities, knocked the wind out of the juggernaut.
Still, the HRE attempted to strike one last victory before needing to regroup their forces and marched on Paris. Charles was there, as was King Phillipe and most of the rest of the royal princes. On a bridge over the Seine, the two forces collided.
The battle was pitched, but winnable. Phillipe, though, panicked as usual and took off running, even though he wasn't near the actual physical fighting. This lead to a collapse of the defenders. The other princes fled with their father, leaving Charles the only royalty on the field. He charged up to reinforce the remaining spearmen who now were being slowly pushed off the bridge. They eventually broke and routed, yet Charles remained. Even when his own unit was decimated, he stayed at the edge of the bridge, holding back the enemy by himself. Soon he was not only the only man in his unit left, but also the only Frenchmen on the whole battlefield. He did fall that day, but not before killing over fifty men after his forces deserted him (who knows how many he personally killed before then).
His dying act weakened the invaders enough that Paris was liberated before it fell and the two kingdoms sued for peace shortly afterwards.
I didn't play much further than that, disheartened by the sad string of French generals and the loss of the one was the ultimate contradiction of knightly virtuous on the field and the anthesis of such off.

It is obvious that he was so sad in his life that he wanted to die in combat... THAT was why he was so vicious!
But damn, I didn't think you could marry your own.
