Well I stumbled upon this nifty little config setting:
[misc]
show_hud_date = true
What it does is displaying the season and the year over the minimap in addition to the turn number, instead of replacing it.

So here's the actual how-to part:
1 - Open your medieval2.preferences.cfg file (or your mod's .cfg file) in a text editor, such as notepad
2 - Copy the above code into it at the top
3 - Save the file (and in the case of the vanilla config file you might want to set it to read-only, too, or the game will overwrite it again)
4 - Enjoy
