Actually, the fastest way is to edit the descr_strat text file in your Rome: Total War\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign folder. Move all of the factions from the Unlockable and Unplayable sections to playable. Save the text file. You may want to create a backup first, in case of any errors.

Leave the senate and rebel factions in the unplayable section though, as trying to play as them causes CtD's if I remember correctly.

Data then world then maps then campaign then imperial campaign then desc_strat.

Just copy and paste which ever factions you want into playable.

Warning about SPQR: if you play them and click on the senate icon in game, it will crash

Warning about Rebels: if you play them, expect no money, with random crashes.

Hi Ozzman,
Your R:TW "imperial_campaign" folder is usually located in either
"C:/Program Files/The Creative Assembly/Rome - Total War/data/maps/world/campaign/imperial_campaign"
should you have Gold, or
"C:/Program Files/Activision/Rome - Total War/data/maps/world/campaign/imperial_campaign"
should you have a standard version (not Gold).

You can enter the folder by copying and pasting one of the above paths into your Windows Explorer bar. Of course, if you chose to install R:TW somewhere different, you may have to utilise the Windows search function to help locate the storage area.

so i find the folder on my documents page?Not quite Ozzman1O1, to acess the folder you need to first enter Windows Explorer. You can do this by opening "My Computer" or simply "Computer" under Windows Vista. You can find this icon upon your Desktop - basically the screen you first see when you load your PC up.

Once you are into the area navigate to:
"C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign"
should you have Gold or:
"C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign"
should you have a standard version, not Gold.

You can enter these directories by typing the relavant path specified above into your navigational bar. This can be found directly below the top of the window. The bar should currently be filled with the words "My Computer".

If you are unsure which version you have, type both into the bar, and see which one your system registers as valid.

Once you are in the directory, find a file named "descr_strat" or "descr_strat.txt".

Open it up, and change the file from this:

Bear in mind that the spaces infront of the factions names are tab spaces. Also ensure that your edit contains no mispellings or errors - if there are any, the file will fail to work.

Hello again Ozzman1O1,
May I request information about your Operating System? Windows Vista's user account control (UAC) is extremely awkward when it comes to editing files in the "Program Files" directory.

First thing you have to try, regardless of your Operating System, is editing the file again using these instructions (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=1702406#post1702406). If that fails, and you are using Vista, simply follow the following instructions:

If you do have Vista, then first open up your "Computer" icon on your desktop.

As before, type "Control Panel" in the navigation bar.

The next steps depend upon whether you have the classic view, or the modern view enabled.

Should you be utilising the classic view, simply select "User Accounts" from the menu.

Should you be using the modern view, select "User Accounts and Family Safety". From there, click on "User Accounts".

Once you are into the area, select "Turn User Account Control On or Off".

You will then be asked for permission to continue. Either enter the correct administrator password, or simply click continue to move onwards.

From there, it is nice and easy. Quite simply de-check the check-box on the screen, and click "Ok".

After that, restart your computer, and use these instructions (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=1702406#post1702406) to attempt to modify the file again.

If you don't have Windows Vista, and you are following the said instructions precisely, then there may be a problem elsewhere. If you are entirely sure that you are doing everything correctly, you may have to ask the owner of the computer if there are any restrictions which could be preventing you from making the change.
