View Full Version : Creative Assembly Question for Activision or CA... (Target? Longjohn?)

Since much of the sale of MTW is based on capturing the existing market of STW players, would Activision (or CA) consider providing a joint server and forum that could host new MTW and old STW?

I realize that the direct investment Activision has in STW is small (being an EA product) However, they are now the custodians of the Total War franchise and are reaping benefits from the two years of established Total War gaming under STW. The addition/combination of servers would go ALONG WAY to generating A TON of customer good will.

It would benefit Activision / CA to have a strong, healthy Total War community. (Especially for future releases!) Having all the chats together would make for a large unified community, even if all people weren't playing MTW.

I look forward to playing MTW, but badly want to see an official gaming place for the old STW/WE for I'm sure game play will be decidedly different between the two.

I think it is no coincidence that EA, who no longer are part of the Total War franchise, pulled the plug on the server as soon as MTW was released. I'm sure they will not spend another cent in support of another publisher or developer's game so I believe it is up to the company(ies) that are carrying on the Total War line to continue to support previous, loyal customers.

Thank you
SM2

pulling the plug as it happend now is plain stupid and should be punished.

it would be seen as a nice gesture if teh old shoggers could play on teh twm server. wouldnt that perhaps draw them towards twm as well.

Im sorry to say it, but I doubt that will happen as EA most probably still has the rights to STW and isnt likely to give it up just because we want to play both on the same server.

GAH!

Warrior monks, in their satin sheets and bald heads, have no chance against mounted feudal sargeants weighed down by 100 pounds of armor...

GAH!

hey mitch,
good to see you're still around :)

we knew this one was coming. has EA truly pulled the plug?

there are or would be complications in all this. i supppose CA could buy back the rights or have activision buy back the rights, but we've also got gamespy in the works now too. and remember, that even though Dreamtime now seems to be defunct, they held the copyrights and trademarks for stw/we/mi, whereas now CA has those rights for mtw. so, it's a pretty big mix.

we do have a couple folks now running stw/we/mi servers of their own. tosa has been running one using the fakesrv code that RSW made. seems to be working pretty well by stated accounts.

it might, and this is a VERY guarded ..might.., be possible to pull the same trick with stw/we/mi on the mtw servers as we pulled with stw being run on the we/mi servers. but i dont know of anyone that's tried that out yet. if you recall, it only took changing some port numbers around in the internet.cfg file on stw or of we/mi to run on the stw servers.

if indeed EA has pulled the plug, then they are somewhat slitting their own throats, and i'd be surprised if they were doing that. a sequel game ALSO generates new sales in the earlier games. so, i'd be surprised if EA is truly dumping the servers for stw/we/mi. but then, i'm playing so much mtw, that i havent actually looked :)

the port number mtw uses is 18321 but changing the port wont do... the exe file is configured differently than the last 2 versions. not quite sure about the details but the game is checking the cd key differently.. short version... looks like a server program for mtw will be much much harder than warrior edition. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

Rewritting Shogun to use gamespy would be a lot of work, regardless of the legal issues.

Hi Longjohn,

Thanks for the response.

It's a bummer to hear that it would be difficult. Probably means it will never happen.

Still, I hope someone has a go at it.
