View Full Version : Kingdoms: General - Aren't forts Lovely!!!
So, I've been playing a bit of the Irish campaign on Kingdoms.
I have too much money.
I happened to reclaim an empty English fort with a stack of 3 units, en-route to an army - I noticed that 2 of the units turned blue - meaning (I'm assuming) that you don't pay upkeep, as they are "free garisson" units.
I absolutely LOVE this. I was trying to build a "standing Army" to defend against marauding Scottish / Welsh / Vikings / Rebels.
Instead, I can fill each of the 6/7 forts with 2 man stacks, and I've got a "free" army hanging round, waiting for a reason to pull them together.
Brilliant! And historically sensible too. Anyone else noticed this? I'm always very mean with my armies, trying to keep upkeep costs down, to ensure I can keep developing at a high speed. It's very useful to be able to 'bank' free units like that.
Indeed, they are also good solid defensive structures, can hold off a good assault with relative ease :)
Ooh, the game surprised me last night - I had a fort with an archer and a heavy knights, and it was assaulted by:
3 spearmen, 2 catapults, 1 trebuchet.
I thought "here we go, my cav will destroy the artillery, the end".
Instead, however, they kept the spearmen close to the arty, stormed the castle, and eventually took the fort!
Well played the AI!

Great AI! Keep it up! You're beginning to learn! :applause: ~:thumb: :elephant: :cheerleader: :bounce:
Oh yes, forts are lovely. Shame you can't build those stone forts by yourself...

Play Crusades? I haven't gotten a chance to build a fort yet (2500 a pop instead of 500!) But my understanding is that Crusades forts are stone and stick around after the army has left. Plus the map is absolutely FULL of mountain choke points.
BTW My favorite Crusades faction after Byzantium is Antioch. Call me a romantic (btw I never realized the meaning of that word until now), but Roman Power! Anyway, Antioch seems sort of the underdogs vs Holy City, and are in a position to take out both Turks and Byzantium.

I've only had a quick overlook on the Crusades campaign; I've been occupied by the Americas campaign as the Apaches. I'll probably check out the Crusades sometime later. It would be great if you actually can build stone forts there.

BTW, I noticed that I couldn't build forts in enemy territory in Crusades. I guess it makes sense since they are long term stone structures.
i don´t know why allow Stone Forts in Crusades if you don´t in Britannia, it would make sense not to allow since some morons could build stone forts after every step...
Just so nobody is as disappointed as I was, you should know that the Crusades forts are NOT stone.
They're permanent, but they're just the same old pile-of-sticks deathtraps as always.
I still think this must be a bug, since they look like stone forts on the strategy map.
I'm not sure - 2500 florins for a stone fort seems like an awfully good deal...
Which isn't to say that 2500 florins for a wooden cage is good value for money - just that it seems very cheap considering the quality of the stone forts in Britannia.

now only if the crusades campaign got stone forts it would make it a lot more fun.sure the forts on the campaign map in the crusades campaign may look like there stone but fight on the battle map and there wooden.
stone forts are great as the england i won a battle were i had a bit over 600 troops 4 units being longbow men.2 units armored sword units. rest the new powerfull england spear unit.battleing the soct who had a army over 1000 men.thanks to boiling oil and there leader being far away from his men when they got in to the fort won me the day.stone forts ROCK!
Damn, having only been playing Brittania campaign so far & with historical Crusade Forts having included the likes of Krak de Chevaliers, I was rather looking forward to having stone forts :wall:
The Krak de Chevaliers is just a regular old fortress. The only thing special about it is that Antioch has to hold it in order to recruit Hospitaller units.

Eh? The mighty Krak des Chevaliers is a pile of wooden sticks in the game? Doesn't make sense... The Knights Hospitaller's headquaters have their headquaters in a camping area walled with pointy sticks? I bet it's a bug... Those forts should be made of stone.

Ok, my bad. I thought lars573 meant Chevaliers is a fort, but apparently I misunderstood. Maybe I should play the crusades campaign a bit before talking more...

So, I don't suppose that adding this line makes them into proper stone forts, does it?
I mean, I can dream, but I don't expect it to be anywhere near that easy. ^_^

I dunno, I was playing Norway in the Britannia compaign, and the English were down to 1 province, but had 3 full armies scattered around the south of England in forts, not doing anything while first the Welsh and I took over the whole area.
I thought that by taking the last English settlement the remaining 3 English armies would go rebel or something, but no, the Baron's Alliance becomes the English, and the 3 armies joined them! Then next turn I get a mission from the Barron's Alliance to take Gloucester and give it to them for 2,000.... WTF?

I have noticed that to. The AI is addicted to stone forts. In my Welsh campaign they occupied forts with troops they needed desperately elsewhere. I was able to sneak with small forces pass the forts and capture the English cities. Once an AI army occupies a fort it hardly ever leaves it.

Yeah, it seems to be either that they don't move out of them, or they ignore them completely.....
lol Yea in my last Welsh Campaign, I'd find some forts that had full stacks in them, yet others that were completely abondoned. All the while their castles and cities were left hopelessly underdefended and they refused to leave their fort to stop the siege.
