View Full Version : Shame on you, University of Victoria Student Society

The UVic Student Student Society recently voted to ban the Canadian Armed Forces from it's career fair. Apparently they think their little lambs aren't smart enough to make their own decisions and will be too easily swayed into a life of raping young children, burning villages, and looting museums by the silver-tongued recruiters.

Fortunately, there has been such an uproar from the student body about this ivory tower decision that the SS has backed off of their decision and will allow the matter to be put to a vote by the general student population.

I sincerely hope that these kids do the right thing.

"We have to make this decision for students," Ms. Comrie was quoted in the student newspaper, The Martlet, as telling the meeting.

A colleague seemed to concur: "I'm all for students having open debate," said Caitlin Meggs, the society's director of academics, "but the point is that you can't have a debate if you're not fully informed."

Ugh....

Director-at-large Christine Comrie said it was important to ban the military because some students didn't know the facts about Canada's role in Afghanistan.

A colleague seemed to concur: "I'm all for students having open debate," said Caitlin Meggs, the society's director of academics, "but the point is that you can't have a debate if you're not fully informed."

Why am I not surprised?

'Open debate' requires shutting up one side.

So I guess that every company that doesn't also presents the downsides of the job should be banned then from UVSS as well? And that's not even going into the rumoured part yet.

Frankly, I think they should ban every company that has more than three employees, otherwise the students may be co-opted unwittingly into the military-industrial-capitalist-pigopolies and spend their expendable lives as unthinking drones.

It's the only way to protect these gentle flowers of our youth.

In recent years Canadian Armed Forces have been morphing from a peacekeeping force, to a warmongering force akin to Bush's.

Therefore, it serves them right if they are no longer welcome to be promoting themselves in schools.

So banning people you don't agree with from what is supposed to be the epitome of intellectual discourse and open mindedness is alright then?

That kind of a moot point since if Canada got attacked by the USA, it would never ever be able to defend itself anyhow.

And if Canada gets attacked by any other country, then chances are it still wouldn't be able to defend itself anyhow. But that doesn't matter since the USA would come bail Canada out with the US army.

Therefore, having Canadian Forces or not pretty much doesn't really make any difference either way.

*shrug* Sovereign states are pretty much required to have an army on general principles. Quite literally comes with the territory.

As a Canadian "warmonger," I take exception to that. I know that you personally feel Afghani women should have been forced to stay in their place wearing their beekeeper hats, pleasuring their husbands, scrubbing the floors, and receiving helpful beatings from the benevolent Taliban if they happen to be caught on the street without their father or husband (for their own good of course, Allah be praised), but most of us in Canada happen to disagree with such barbaric drivel.

So far, invading Canada, we're 0 for 2.

Beirut and company have already created a "poison pill" for anyone dumb enough to take over Canada -- they inherit the Free Quebec stuff at the same time.

All in all, I'll leave them to their well-intentioned health care and surging loonie.

If we were to invade Canada, I'm all for a short advance until we take over the southern BC ski resorts (whistler or bust!). We can let the Canadians keep everything else.

If I learned anything from Michael Moore's movies its that Canadians go crazy when you insult their beer.

Nevermind preparing students for how real-life is going to be tough. Better keep them happy and ignorant. If they can't hack working 70 hours a week (or a 100 or 120) then the welfare state, funded by people who can hack it, will be able to provide for them.

AFAIK Maoism is a brand of revolutionary Communism (there's a honest-to-God Maoist revolutionary movement in was it now Burma, actually) - not that much to do with the person of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung really.

One would expect a university to give as broad as possible view of your career options as possible, therefore not exclude one particular employer because students could "do better then that", or politically correct nonsense.

I think the Student Council really oversteps its bounds considering the comments from the members.

I know it's an anti-military sentimentality and all that, but if you're in a place of authority then you should at least act as if you're worthy of it: as impartial as possible.

so he's sorta like a dictator/jerk?Hey! Capo's a nice guy! He's not around anymore though.

His actual user name right now is actually Kaiser of Arabia.

AFAIK Maoism is a brand of revolutionary Communism (there's a honest-to-God Maoist revolutionary movement in was it now Burma, actually) - not that much to do with the person of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung really.I think you mean Nepal. It had a lot of problems with the Maoist rebels relatively recently. Went off under the news radar as far as the rest of the world's concerned.

Burma is chock full of military junta types and the people they oppressed; there aren't any major revolutionary movements hiding in the jungles there that I know of at least.

Maoist? Capo of Arabia? He always struck me as more like Panzer in political beliefs.I think the Lord of the Frontroom is being a teeny little bit ironic.

quickly in then: I am a bit struggling with the subject. On the one hand, I would prefer for the military to stay far away from the university too.
I can fully relate to this: The Student Union Building is truly the only space on campus that is for students and run by students," said Ho. "They feel strongly about not having the military in their space actively recruiting them in their own space.

On the other, there is something very patronising about it. And some of the remarks from the student council are simply beyond arrogant. Why can't they just say what they mean: that they dislike the military and don't want them on their home turf.
They are making a fool of themselves with their ridiculous reasoning:
Director-at-large Christine Comrie said it was important to ban the military because some students didn't know the facts about Canada's role in Afghanistan.
"We have to make this decision for students," Ms. Comrie was quoted in the student newspaper,

Reasoning like that reminds of generals coming up with constant new and ever so ridiculous excuses why gays shouldn't be allowed in the army.
