Do you think that the campaign mode makes you play with casualty budgets in mind?
I know that in STW I will retreat if I would lose too many troops which would cause a domino effect into my softer inner provinces.
Interesting idea but I am againts any arbitrary scoring system. As the authors discuss this caution or "hesitation" should come from the uncertainity of the situation. Alas, when you play the computer simulation of these historical battles (Gettysburg, Borodino, etc.) there is no such uncertainity, thus you can commit all of your forces. IMO it is more likely that you will face such an uncertainity in a SP campaign than in a single battle. However, I think there is one thing missing from the SP campaigns as well, and this is the population based approach toward recruitment. As far as I know you can recruit any soldier provided that you have enough money(at least this was the case in STW/MI). Now, obviously this is not realistic. The size of the population of the given country will ultimatly limit your choices. For example, the French were completely bled out at the and of the Napoleonic wars, as well as the Germans at the and of WWII. So, it would be nice if there were some limit on the number of soldiers that you can recruit from a given country (which should depend on the size of the population). IMO this limit should make you more catious in your approach.
Yes.
Only an irresponsible ruler would commit his one army to a foolhardy attack across a bridge, for example, knowing the enemy to be stronger, and, if faced with defeat would be overrun, and if victorious, knowing it would probably be Phyrric, and would still be overrun...
GAH!
In MTW, such a concept would be a subconscious decision by the player himself, and not explicit in the game.
GAH!
But then again, I could be wrong...
