View Full Version : What A Game!
Hello everyone. This is my first post(having been a lurker for a while now), and I have to say that MTW is an incredable game!
I purchased it as part of Eras, and am greatly impressed. After reading the manual, doing the tutorials, and downloading the XL mod, I'm hooked.
I've started a campaign as the Hungarians a few days ago, and am immersed into the intricases of running my Kingdom and just plain surviving. This game is so interesting on so many levels. So far I have been able to marry off one of my princesses to my immensly powerful Byz. neighbors, hopefully sealing an alliance for some time.
As an aside, I was attacked by tiny little Serbia, which took me by surprise. So I mustered my army invaded them, and even more to my surprise, my allies the Byz.'s sent me a message saying that they would help. Next turn, in moved their army to Serbia and together we trounced them. But what surprised me the most was a message that the province of Serbia was handed over to the Byz.'s because they sent a slightly larger army than mine...shocking!...I'll have to watch my allies more closely...and I'll have to get more 'medieval' in my thinking!
Also of interest is, after I made an alliance with the Pope(fisrt one to do so), he started sending me 1000 florins every three turns or so, for my behaviour as a good Christian, and helping the atholic Church! Keep the money coming!~:)
I tell you, I cannot think of another game I've played that has given me this much fun, and required me to actually 'think'...great stuff.
Boy, I can see I'm going to loose alot of my sleep, and my life to this game. ;)
Cheers
Alex

I know how you feel...
I was feeling the same when I first played this game.
MTW, in my opinion, is one of the best games ever created

 You're learning fast! It is by far the most addictive game I've ever played - I'm sure you already recognise this pattern: "Hmm, midnight. Okay, one more year then I'll go to bed...", "Oops, it's one o'clock, so I'll just grab that next province before I go to bed....", "Well, it's only 2am, I've still got time to get this Crusade finished.." .... "Morning dear .... no no ... not all night, I just got up early, honest..." ~D

Yes, Alex D, welcome to the world of Medieval Total War: a game for single, self-employed people or people who are prepared to risk divorce and the sack!

Yep, this game is definitely addictive. Even more so when you take into account the great mods other than the XL mod available.

I have got to go out and get me this game that all of you speak so fondly of. Believe it or not....never tried MTW but i'm seriously getting curious about it now. I'm especially curious about this XL mod people speak so highly of. I'm more of a Roman era kind of guy to be sure but i'm starting to get a little curious about all this Medieval stuff...i know...a little late eh?

Now, now, all that matters is that you can now see the light.:beam: Yes, XL is very good, but so are WesW's Medmod, and BKB's Super mod. Also, there's the Pocket Mod, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, it makes mostly small changes to the game, where the others make more. Just depends on what your tastes are, all are excellent. Furthermore, if you're into 17th century warfare, the Pike and Musket mod is excellent as well. I know there's a couple of ancient/bronze age mods as well, but I haven'te yet tried them myself.

Thanks for the tips on which mods to try. I'll probably be running down to the local Best Buy sometime today and see if i can scoop myself up this game...hell i'll probably scoop Shogun while i'm there as well, just to complete the collection sort of speak. I got the Total War bug as of the RTW title ( since i particularly love this era of history ) so missed out on the 2 previous titles and it's expansions but have read about how players still rave about MTW and Shogun to some extent as well and have heard of players raving about mods like the XL mod for MTW without me really even visiting MTW forums. So i'm definately curious now. I'm sure the other mods you mentioned are very good as well and i'll be sure to sample them in due course as soon as i purchase my copy of MTW and see if it can distract me from RTW for at least a little while.....:2thumbsup:

Strangely enough, THAT is my EXACT (not kidding) line of thought, every night. Just one more! And for some reason, I use invasions as an excuse to stay up late, no matter thier size and army composition. "I'll just finish this faction off...dang another faction attacked me, guess I'll have to finish them off too... :laugh2: "

Well i found me a copy of MTW and VI. Had to buy Total War Eras to get it and it was the last box they had. I couldn't find it anywhere and found it at my 5th stop right when i was about to give up. Which is cool because i wanted to give Shogun a try as well so killed several birds with one stone sort of speak. Since i'm a complete noob when it comes to MTW/VI would you fellas recommend i play a vanilla campaign at first or should i just dive right into mods like XL or BKB i believe it's called? You guys on this forum got me real curious about the original MTW which is why i ran out yesterday and hunted me down a copy. I hope the eras version isn't a problem for some reason i wouldn't know about at this time. I'm planning on giving this baby a couple of laps around the track sort of speak while i'm waiting on EB 1.0 and i'm sure i will enjoy it as some of the posters here have attested to.

I'll give you my take on the whole thing. Personally, I would take a crack at a regular game or 2 just to get a good feel for the game. From what I hear it's a little different from RTW. XL and BKB add alot of new factions, units etc, so it could be a tad overwhelming at first. Not to mention some of the new factions are not to be played by the feint of heart. It's really hard to win with a few of them.
After that, I'd take a crack at Pocketmod or WesW's mod if you're looking for a mostly the same as the original, but with vast improvements in gameplay and etc. I haven't gotten around to Pocketmod yet, but I've heard good things all the way around.
Or if you're on the hunt for more units, more factions, more stuff then XL or BKB might be where you'll spiral off too.
As for me I've generally stick with the standard MTW/VI. I'll take a crack at one of the mods every once in awhile (PocketMod is next on the list), and they're all very well done. The guys that do the mods put alot of time and effort into them and it shows in gameplay. Maybe its a comfort thing for me.
Glad you're enjoying the game, Alex D! Just remember that you have to stop to eat and use the bathroom every now and then. ~;)

I would recommend playing the original MTW/VI first, if only so you can get a feel for the game. There are some noticable differences from RTW/M2TW (especially in regards to the battles), so it would probably be in your best interest to familiarize yourself with the game before anything else.
Since you enjoy the Greco-Roman era of ancient history, you might want to try out Hellenic Total War (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=51); it's a total conversion mod that allows you to play in ancient Greece as the Persians and various Greek city-states (Athens, Sparta, etc.). I've only played with that mod a little bit myself, but it looked quite good.
In any case, I welcome you to the Main Hall, Lysander13! May you derive much enjoyment of the politics, intrigue, and merciless battles of Medieval Total War. :medievalcheers:

If any of my "allies" deside to "help" me capture a province, I consider hanging back and letting them do the dirty work. That increases your chances of having more troops at the end.

@ Sensei Warrior, Martok
Thank you both for your input and recommendations. Which i will surely follow and put at least a campaign or two under my belt before i move on to mods like XL or BKB....or most likely both at some point. Thanks Martok for the Hellenic Total War link although i will probably not allow myself the temptation of even looking at it as i'm trying to expand my horizons here sort of speak and play only campaigns and mods set in the Medieval Era. I could very well see myself downloading that thing and continue with my Medieval ignorance...:dizzy2: Anyhow, thanks for the friendly reception.
