View Full Version : EB 1.0: Teaser 1
Greetings Europa Barbarorum fans.
We are so very close to a new public release of EB, that we can barely contain it behind closed doors. We are all very excited about bringing you the best, and we hope that this teaser, and the ones to follow, will give you that same sense of excitement.
Yes, it is true. Europa Barbarorum 1.0 is coming.
Thanks goes to Kampfkrebs for the great teaser trailer. To Atilius and The_Mark for their scripting work on the Allied Province Rulers, to BozosLiveHere for his work on traits for the same project, and to Teleklos Archelaou for the well written paragraph below.
Teaser Trailer: The Horsemen Have Come
Kampfkrebs has been working diligently on a new line of videos for faction intros. We wanted to show off his talent as soon as possible. So here is the first of a number of teaser trailers he has made for us.
You can watch on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Toc3gq0rRCE), or you can download a high quality version from our ftp (ftp://ftp.europabarbarorum.org/nomadtrailerHQ.rar).
Allied Province Rulers:
For all factions in the game, a type4 government is essentially that of an allied state who has ceded over a large degree of their own autonomy to you and your faction after a major defeat at your hands. They have felt like just another province in some respects, until now. Now, when you conquer a territory and build a type4 government there, an allied ruler or puppet ruler will be spawned and will enter the city. He will have a local bodyguard and will have no mobility - he is to remain inside the city. As this is an allied territory, placing your own characters in the city will be taken as a sign of further aggression by the local populace and there may be riots. It is up to you whether or not you will control the city at that point or put it on automanage and let it tend to its own affairs. Keeping local troops stationed there is advisable, and having the city, your "ally", supply your own army with troops for your campaigns would also be a logical result of the arrangement.

We hope you have enjoyed this teaser for the next release of Europa Barbarorum.
Please note that unless stated otherwise, ALL pictures, names, and descriptions shown in our previews are works in progress. We continue to improve on all parts of EB, and we will continue to do so long after our initial release.
Since some areas where these news items are posted cannot handle wide images, we appreciate your restraint from quoting full-size images.
As always, if you have questions or comments, the best place to post them is here, where the EB team is most active:

That's a pretty sweet system. Is there any way to remove the client ruler once he's established (by changing the government or something?)?
It is good to see EB 1.0 coming closer. I am wondering what other surprises you guys have for us.
Client ruler is a damn funny thing ~:thumb:

Wonderful news! That client ruler thing is a great idea!
If you'll excuse me now, I'm going to have a heart attack out of excitement...

You can destroy the government, but he'll stay until he dies (or until you create a new gov4, I think, at which point a new one is put in charge). You may want to keep someone close to take over the leadership if you choose to overthrow his government.
How long we need to wait? Month?

Apologies for my constant questioning, but what happens should there be a rebellion with the governor being kicked out? Can he be moved back in?
I like the idea of the system. It makes allied provinces far more distinct.
No, I think you'll have to retake the settlement and rebuild a gov4 then.

Actually, provided the traiting supports it, you can move the old ruler back and just repair/rebuild the govt with the old ruler.

There is no trigger to give back movement to an ousted client ruler, sorry.

Nice idea this new governer setup. Can he sally out if besieged, I presume so?
So did I miss something, I thought that v0.9 was the next release, not that I'm complaining. Not long now until another 2-3 month epic campaign then eh!

So is there a chance that if the puppet ruler has disloyal traits, he might rebel with the entire province?
It's a great idea to have them, it also frees up my valuable FMs to go fight like they should.
In this release, there are no triggers that cause them to be particularly disloyal. We may create all sorts of special features for client rulers in a later release though, and disloyalty is hardly the most far fetched of those :beam:.

seems like a waste of time to do an intro for every faction. maybe one for the nomads, one for the eastern greeks, one for the w. greeks, one for romans, one for barbarians, ect.
1. No.
2. One for each faction.

1. I presume "puppet" to become a member of the family in a way of adoption, right?
2. And every Government IV province will always have a "puppet ruler", right?
If so, I'm afraid that clan's "own" family branch would be reduced greatly and and may be would disappear at all, replaced by an horde of local puppets
1. y not
2. :beam:
3: a waste of time
1. Because we don't want to give away something that we are all quite proud of before the release of 1.0.
2. We have always decided on one for each faction, how else can we make explicit the differences in the goals and culture of each faction. Not even the Arverni and Aedui could have the same faction intro.
3. It could be argued that writing individual descriptions per faction per building is a waste of time. We did because we love our mod and want each faction to be unique. Just apply that reasoning to the faction intros.

No that is incorrect. The puppet ruler does not join the family tree and so does not reduce the number of real family members.

One feels that hooahguy14 may indeed percieve it as a waste of time, perphaps due to an unreasonable sense of fear that EBv1.0 may be delayed due to the shear number of intro videos needed.
Are you doubting Mr Kampfkrebs ability to be prolific in said area?

This statement compared to
seems like a waste of time to do an intro for every faction.
this, is rather annoying :laugh4:
I understand that you cant wait to see as much intros as possible.
But the problem is, Im the only one atm, who does video editing in general (recording shots, edit them and stuff). My comrades provide me with a payload of ideas and - most important - suitable music.
But my main problem remains: I havent a team of cutters/people who record as many cool scenes as possible. Besides this I wont do simply one "style" of intros for all factions. I try to find every factions unique style, and I think this goes very well atm (for those who saw my work already).
And, of course, Im an artist. And like every artist I have hours where I can work 24hours and still have new ideas, and sometimes I have a cliffhanger for a week, and do nothing, but this is the risk of the buisiness :sweatdrop:

EB 1.0 will certainly not be held up for the campaign intros. The faction intros will be an ongoing thing, and only one will appear in 1.0.

Cool! :D
Just a few questions:
If you won't have time (for this release) to give ousted puppet rulers movement points, I understand, but could you at least kill them off like those spies that let you see more of the map at the start of the game? I can just envisage having loads of random armies with just one general in enemy territory - not very historically accurate, surely! Another option, I suppose, is to make them Eleutheroi when they're ousted (as if they went into hiding after failing you or something).
As the cilent rulers are Generals, have you had to use up an additional unit slot for them, or have you copied and pasted some BI features somehow? :S
Will you still be able to recruit, build etc. in Type IVs?
What will be the point of Type IVs now, with all this additional hassle? Won't everyone now just build IIIs in areas where only IIIs and IVs are available? No offence, BTW.
Will this feature be available to all factions?
Will client rulers be of the conquering faction's ethnicity or of the conquered province's ethnicity (or of the ethnicity of the surrounding area)?
Just a small thing, but in that picture of Taras being besieged, there are tents in the sea!
Cool! :D

1. I don't know. We can't kill them off as the script is long enough as it is.
2. Unit slots aren't needed for generals. You just spawn a character and give him any unit and that unit becomes a bodyguard.
3. Yes, you can still recruit and build in Type IVs.
4. We implemented it because we felt it would be a cool addition for those players who truly like to roleplay their governments. For all others, it certainly makes more sense to build a Type III (though they won't be able to recruit recruitable generals).
5. Yes
6. They don't have an ethnicity.
7. This always happens with the siege graphic when it is used around a town near a body of water. The model is placed regardless of what the terrain is like underneath, so sometimes it will go into mountains and other times it will float on the sea.

Oh right, I see. I thought you were referring to the ethnicity traits. Because of the game hardcodes, the puppet rulers use the names and pictures of the controlling faction. Thus if you played as the romans all the puppet rulers would have a roman picture and a roman name. If you played as the Saka, they would have a nomad picture and a saka name.

Yes, I would have prefered that the puppet rulers could be given names and portraits suitable to the region that they then command. All is not lost, however, as it could be said that the puppet ruler has to some extent taken on the trappings of the faction's culture who has installed him into power.

The point of type4's is this: as we have intended all along, type4 govts (i.e., "allied govts") should be used in cities that already are very large and have good local recruitment different from your faction. If you are romans and you take Syracuse, you might use it. If you are Getai and take Athens, etc. That way you don't have to build them up a lot - you get a "free" general to help control them, you get the best local MIC's possible, and they make you lots of money with (generally) trade bonuses. Don't use type4's for provinces with a similar culture to your own. And don't use them for small cities, since you can't build them up as large with the maximum number of your faction buildings. This new addition makes all of this even more "perfect" in our minds. Plus we changed the "allow ai local taxation" sliders and buttons to "allow total local autonomy" and such, to further clarify these things.
Love the idea of the allied rulers. And the video really is a 'teaser':wall:

One last question: I noticed that one of the characters in the screenshots had the first name "Caivs". People generally know the Roman name "Gaius", although I know that "C." stood for "Gaius" - so what is all this Caius/Gaius business? Was it like Jon/John or something?

Expect them when you see them.
somewhere over at the TWC said that this was going to be the 2nd to last release of EB for RTW.
I suspect that someone was me, but I wrote something slightly different. I wrote there would be at least one and probably two releases before EB 1.0. I based this prediction on the remarks of several team members. However, it appears that the team has either made unexpected progress towards the end or got tired of their mod being called a beta and decided to present their next release as the full thing.
I was, and still am, reasonably confident that the team will continue to upgrade EB1 after the 1.0 release
Great news i cant wait for the next release

Until some Emperor ordered something be done about the G & C mess Latin had become the G did not exist as a seperate letter in the Roman alphabet.
Why did the man want such a change? Well, the pronounciation of names such as Caius & Cnaeus and lots of words had changed so much that they did not sound anything like other words beginning with a C anymore at all.
And so, the G was invented: a C with something attatched to it to make it look different; and to make let people know "oh this one is pronounced Gaius instead of Caius".

When they die you can either get a new one by destroying and then rebuilding a new Type IV gov, or you can try a different gov and not be worried by the your ex-puppet ruler getting in the way. The script does not place a new puppet ruler when the old one dies.

The script does not place a new puppet ruler when the old one dies.
Why is that? Wouldn't puppet governments have simply changed puppet rulers upon a particular puppet ruler's death, rather like the real government would have passed from ruler to ruler? This stop-start method just seems rather awkward and doesn't seem like something that would have been done.

Well we could do get the script to do this, but then we supposed that people don't really want the game to lag anymore than it already does, as such a script would be several thousand lines long and would check every turn for each character and the status of the government building in each settlement. We don't even want to imagine what that would do to the game.
Besides, it makes sense. Puppet rulers were generally only allowed to take up the throne of their little kingdom if they had been allowed to by the their "benefactors". Rome always did this. Kappadokia changed hands a lot between wars and kings dieing because Rome decided that the supposed next in line was not really loyal enough to be king.

Just guessing here, but I presume there's no trigger for a characters death to spawn another one. Besides, it makes some sense: once the old strongman is gone, a new one needs to be found and installed. It'd be great to have some unrest in the meantime, or perhaps early on in the career of a governor.
Edit: beaten to it.
Great work as always EB team
I've got a question ! You said you will make an intro for each faction. Well It's just exciting ,But would all intros be played in English or each faction's intro will be played by faction's native language???
Thanks
I'm not sure if there will be any voice at all. As for text, I think rendering "The cute horsies are coming! Attack!" in saka script, whatever letters that might be, would be stupid; noone would understand a thing except the one guy who researched how the sentence would look. English text suits the movies best.

The plan is to underline every intro with its native language. The one which will be included to the 1,0 doesnt have any spoken parts, but maybe you will hear the next faction intro with its own native language.

It woud be very cool to see the intros and the battle speeches in the native language but with english subtitles. So I could learn some Latin persian and proto-germanic :book:
To Atilius and The_Mark for their scripting work on the Allied Province Rulers, to BozosLiveHere for his work on traits for the same project, and to Teleklos Archelaou for the well written paragraph below.I'm afraid I can't take any credit for the Allied Rulers work, let alone top billing. All of the scripting was done by The_Mark, with traits by BozosLiveHere, and, if I'm not mistaken, concept by Teleklos Archelaou. I believe I was busy crafting the dastardly and blood-curdling [censored] script at the time. Or maybe it was the historically accurate new [redacted]. Can't remember. Anyway, all hail The_Mark.

Hmm... in .81x I think I got a client ruler as Arverni when I bribed Ancyra from the rebels...I think the trait was probably put there beforehand to keep the rebel leader in the settlement, correct?
It's great news that this has been implemented into the main system of play. And greater news that 1.0 is coming! Feature list! I demand feature list! :balloon2:

Odi et amo! :wall: :2thumbsup:
Awesome trailer! And the new allied general idea is brilliant! Ah, it's going to be so exciting to RP with this kind of stuff. And the faction intros...oh, it's gonna be so cool, I know it:2thumbsup: !

I didn't code the traits either, just made some adaptations to the triggers. Malrubius coded them a long time ago. You can even see his code in .81's edct.

I can't really remember what part I had in that. It's sad but I have forgotten so much that goes on inside the mod development. I did something with it, but the 'concepting' of it might be someone else's like Qwerty or eadingas or who knows who. :embarassed:

I'm glad they're coming out with 1.0....I assume they'll begin working on EB 2 in earnest shortly thereafter. I'm really looking forward to EB on the M2:TW engine....it's going to be spectacular.
Not that I won't play this to death for the next year or so....whenever EB 2 v.0001cf alpha 1987c comes out (or whatever insane numbering system you guys are going to use :P).

4. ... For all others, it certainly makes more sense to build a Type III (though they won't be able to recruit recruitable generals).
Just to ask,is this already in EB,or is this a new feature?

Lol, he asked two questions, yet you gave one answer. Implying they are both wrong.
No, they are not in the public build. I think. It's been so long...

Did he? I saw two possibilities being presented as if they were mutually exclusive. They weren't, making it a false dilemma. Foot's answer is correct.

On the rare occasion I amass the ridiculous amounts of money required to bribe any settlement, you may get a client ruler then in the current public build. Only managed a few of times on small eleuthoroi towns, and most of the time any family members in the settlement who are bribed die the next turn, however some will stay with the client governor trait (some bonuses, unable to leave settlement).
So I guess it's kinda in there already but there's not much you can do to control it :D
Nice preview btw :2thumbsup:

I'm not sure if this was asked before
so sorry if it was
but when EB 1.0 gets released would we have to uninstall / reinstall RTW 1.5? (and delete EB)?
Geoffrey S
10-02-2007, 15:44
Not if you're sensible. ~;)
Whenever I install Rome (1.5, or whatever), I copy the folder and install whichever mod I want in the copied folder, keeping a clean Rome install available (which can be copied again, of course).
Swiss Halberd Pike Landsknecht
10-02-2007, 16:19
oh yeah I remember that was the advice at the time
although I never did something like that before and was also worried by copying it could screw up the uninstall function? (as well as confused the CD in which .exe to run)
EB 0.8x puts some files under vanilla, but 1.0 does not. Therefore, your current installation is "tainted", and you cannot install EB 1.0 in the same RTW. However, you can do it in any 1.5 RTW installation where you have not had any EB installed, or another mod that has changed the vanilla files.
Keeping a clean 1.5 vanilla RTW around is still A Good Idea.

I'll most likely uninstall RTW and install the new EB (not sure when it's released)
but I'm sure it's going to be great

EB 0.8x puts some files under vanilla, but 1.0 does not.
I thought some files (such as the loading bar) had to be in the Vanilla folder? Does that mean that EB 1.0 will use the Vanilla loading bar again?
We have had the assistance of Dol Guldur from FATW to get all content working under the mod folder :2thumbsup:.

You had the original idea of puppet rulers, and you did have your hand at concepting them, and so had other folks as well.

Super sweeeeeeeeet! I really digg this new allied/puppet ruler thing. It adds some depth to the allied govermant system.
Oh boy, oh boy as soon as this is released I will not move my ass from my computer chair like for weeks!
Won't this system interfere with the agoge for non-KH factions? Suppose I am playing Epeiros, and have installed an type IV governement in Sparta (which I presume to be a requirement for participating in the Agoge), won't the presence of my young family members undergoing the agoge cause unrest?
