View Full Version : Death of a Retinue
Howdy all,
Can't resolve this through searching the archives so I'll ask the experts myself...
I've been frustrated twice now in my Romani campagin by the death of a successful governor and the associated "death" of his retinue -- even if there is a younger heir / relative waiting in the city to take his place. My latest was in Karali where the governor was well-suited to scrape more than 2500 mnai per turn out of the mines there, only to have the city's income dwindle to about 750 upon his death.
Shouldn't there be a way to explicitly allow another family member in the same city to "inherit" selected elements of a governor's retinue as he dies?
By the way...it's now 237BC and the Maks and Sweboz and on a serious warpath...the Maks have made the Epirotes a protectorate, and the Sweboz have done the same with the Arverni. The Maks wiped out the KH about 5 years ago and are pushing the Getai around pretty well at this point. Invading the Peloponnese will be interesting to say the least!
Thanks!
You can do it manually.
When two characters are in the same city or stack, you can open the 'donor' character's card and then click and drag any retinue characters to the receiving family member's slot on the army page in the middle of the interface.
Some ancillaries will not go mind you, because they are incompatible with the character's existing retinue, or because they are loyal to their current master.

Or because they are present on the receiving end already. ~;)
"Family Retainer" won't move.

in some societies, didnt the servants of a very powerul ruler also kill themselves when they died?

That but in some cases they were killed as part of the burial ritual etc.

I remember hearing something about servants being buried alive with their former masters....not a fun way to go.
Thanks for the quick responses...
I understand about (and sometimes use) the ability to trade and redistribute individual ancillaries. My issue is that I want to keep a particular ancillary with a governor -- thereby gaining the highest benefit from that character -- until the governor dies. AFTER he dies, I'd like to be able to transfer the good characters to the family member that becomes the next governor.
If you don't anticipate the current governor's death, and he dies before you've done the desired transfer, you appear to be out of luck. So I was wondering if there was a way to make this transfer happen as the dead governor is being led away to burial...!
Thanks again...

I'm afraid not, unless it's scriptable, but even then I fail to see how you could know the correct character names.
I would suggest just transferring them when you're governor starts to reach his 60s....you might lose a few turns of income because that governor lost some boni, but at least the ancillaries will be around for another generation.
Thanks, Bootsiuv...I was about ready to conclude that this was indeed my only option. I just want to squeeze as much income from these early years as I can, so I'll have to be a good predictor of impending death!

Or if you save every turn you can reload the tur before the governor died and then swap the ancillaries. Sometimes they don't die the next turn, but you know the migth very soon.

IIRC, in Fourth Age TW relics are transfered from the king to his son by script apon his death. So it is possible, though not for just random everyday ancillaries.
FATW's relics are given to the leader at turn start (or end), whenever they do not exist in the game world at the moment, which means the previous leader has croaked, or the man he entrusted them with. They are very specific ancillaries, as Marcus says, and cannot be programmed dynamically for whatever ancillaries exist on any guy dying.
Somewhat related, there is an interesting feature of M2TW though that allows ancillaries to be conquered. We were discussing ways of making this feature in RTW, I believe we found something that would have worked, but decided to wait for EB2 as it would be readily available then.
I like that idea alot, Bovi...will be looking forward to that in a future release!
Thanks for the info...
