View Full Version : Woman sues Apple because they lowered their price

This is simply beyond me. As many of you know, Apple recently dropped the price of the iPhone by $200. Now, some idiot woman is sueing them over it, because she says she can not resell her phone for as much as she originally paid for it. Let me ask anybody out there: do any of you ever expect to be able to resell any consumer electronic device for as much as you originally paid for it?
Did I mention she is asking for $1,000,000...

Good grief.
I hope the judge dismisses outright and requires the woman to pay attorney fees for Apple and other defendants even it it means garnishing her wages for ten years.

In all seriousness, based on how many people actually bought something that has an excellent potential of becoming a smudgy piece of crap for a hideous hype price, I'd say it is possible. However, the price drop for this product makes this virtually impossible.
She's probably mad because she realized how idiotic her purchase was..
Utterly pathetic. Maybe she should go shopping in Singapore then, where the shop owners barter with you to purchase something and then the next shop owner will buy it off you for more than you paid if he thinks he can sell it at that price.

I'd say she's a iDiot...
Well, if she wins, I'm going to hire a lawyer and sue over every piece of electronics I have ever bought. :beam:
More seriously, I'm pretty much with CR on this one. A completely frivolous lawsuit that's wasting the court's time and forcing Apple to waste money to defend.
Now if only Apple had also lost her pants at the dry cleaners ...
violated price discrimination laws
What? It's their product they can sell it for whatever price they goddamn want. What a moron.

In all fairness, I love the iPhone as a slick piece of technology. The price, however, was ludicrous, and I would never pay such a high price for the product regardless of all the bells and whistles.

LOL!!
@ Goofwad
Pathetic. My hard money is that she is expecting them to settle for something. I hope that what CR suggested comes to pass.

I am eating a roffleburger whilst riding my lollerskates as I read that.

Bah, I'm not a fan of anything Apple. Apple fanboyism makes me sick, as does Apple/Mac 'hipster' culture. I feel dirty owning even an iPod, and I felt ever dirtier after today. Three canuck friends contacted me last week. Long story short, they sent me a combined $1400 or so, and I have three brand new iPhones sitting on my desk waiting to be shipped to them. I felt dirty walking in the Apple store to by them. Yeah that's great, what can your PC do that my Mac can't do? Right click.
Now we know how to drive Whacker insane. Just lock him in an Apple Store, and throw away the key. Make sure they're demoing iPhoto just to make sure he cracks quickly (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/10/20).

They've got a good OS and the hardware is decent as well (if overpriced)- but damn if the smug attitude exuded by virtually every Apple tech, salesperson and most users really does drive one crazy. :wall:

Hmm. There's a class action suit for slander right there, old chap. C'mon, a Linux user bandying stereotypes? :bounce:
:stupido2: Ah, and I will also be suing Steve Jobs personally and Apple alongside for making me buy products that evidently damage my personal credibility. The effects of the Reality Distortion field are well documented and insidious.

No kidding. And I do disagree on the OS... I hate MacOS/OSX with a passion. Never liked any of the iterations of it, doubt I ever will. Non-intuitive at all, hate the window management system, a frigging ONE BUTTON MOUSE, etc etc gripe gripe gripe... For all its bugs, quirks, BSODs, etc, good ol Winderz does just fine by me. Now only if Ubuntu could only add s'more spit and polish shine to what they've got.

Ridiculous case. As has been said, i hope it gets thrown out as a waste of time and that she has to pay expenses. Stupid woman.

Heheh, i love this argument, always the perfect finisher for when arguing with a Mac fan. I completely agree with your comments about the smug hipster culture surrounding Apple. If you feel dirty owning an iPod, why own it? There are plenty of equally good (and more reliable) alternatives - Creative Zen's are very good, i have one. Never had any problems with it, and am quite happy with it.
In fact, any MP3 player by Creative is good. I'd highly recommend them over the hype machine that is the iPod.

Geoffrey, despite your un-orgish language I think Whacker knows quite a lot about the stuff he is talking about. I see Apple fanboys like people dressing all black saying society is bad, the Apple guys just buy white computers and say Microsoft is bad. ~D
And don't tell me stereotyping is bad, my monkeysphere is pretty much full.

Not at all. If the woman in the article can get money from blaming other people for her choices, I can abdicate personal responsibilites with the best of them. :2thumbsup:
Anyway, why the vitriol in this thread aimed at those who have made a different decision about which consumer device suits them? Never understood this from whichever camp (though I suppose the free software movement has a reasonable political point to make about ownership and IP).

I dunno, the auto-defrost feature seems a little soft-soled; real men use an ice-pick, chisel, or screwdriver - I've heard.
:beam: (j/k ol' buddy)
To answer Goofball's question: early-adopters always pay more (for the 'ohh-ahh!' bragging rights over their less-tech friends), yes? That plaintiff should consider the $200 mark-up as the price for those 3-4 weeks of ohh-ahh's she got. The guys who must be really mad are those who bought 3-4 of the iPhones, planning to resell them. But then, the "grey market" has always been a dicey, boom-or-bust business practice.

Excellent point. The people in this thread showing zealotry and anger aren't the Mac users. Ironic, isn't it?
Ironic, isn't it?
Highly. But I must agree, that on a broad scope Apple "fanboys" can be quite the smug ones. But a stereotype is only as accurate as the strength of your prejudice.

Erm.. I'm guessing that comment was directed at me. My comments weren't directed at anyone in particular, they were directed at Apple as a company, their products, and that horrible "culture" they've fostered.
I guess my hot button is vast ego and elitism that goes hand in hand with the aforementioned. Don't believe me? Think I'm exaggerating? Want to actually see a spitting mad rabid Apple fanboy? Hop on down to one of those Apple stores someday, and try to strike up an intelligent, polite discussion with one of the employees under the guise of considering one of their products (helps if you are serious about this too). Topics to bring up are that you are a long time Windows user considering switching, based on your research (yes, do research this) why you think Windows is better, and ask why you should buy their products which on average are 50-100% more expensive? If you can actually make good, substantiated claims and stick to them, and refute a lot of the "statistics" (like crashing and virus figures) that the Apple person will throw at you, odds are good you can get them red-faced veins-bulging barely-controlled rage angry (happened twice), or they just devolved into the sniveling beatnik holier-than-thou types with no real responses to your questions other than "it's better, period" (most common). Also take a look around at the folks inside the store. Don't know about other's visits, but in every single instance the stores I've been in are filled to the brim with the hipster, fashionable, brand-name flaunting teenagers and adults who seem to be fawning over the products and how much they'd increase their cool quotient. "Like oh my GAWD, that pink iPod is soooo cute!! It'd be sooo nice if they mad pink laptops too!" Not saying all Apple people are like this, but this is definitely the view I've held based on my experiences.
And Lemur, it would appear that we already had a few choice comments by a rather unhappy Apple user that were sufficiently un:daisy: enough to be edited out.
Sorry if this is a derail, but I wanted to defend my position here.

Li purchased a 4GB iPhone for $499 and alleged that owners of the 4GB model were given less favorable terms than those who bought the 8GB model at the premium price, according to the lawsuit.
WHAT??!?!?! You get less if you pay less?!?!? Oh, the injustice!!!
