Greetings Europa Barbarorum fans.

Once again, another little teaser for all you fans who cannot wait for 1.0 to be released. If you can wait, we hope this changes your mind.

Thanks goes to Kampfkrebs for the great teaser trailer. To Kailith for his paitence and incredible skill in creating the Oppida files, to Redmeth for his work on integrating the Oppida into the internal build and for his work on re-sizing the trees, and to All Members involved in the concept work of the Oppida.

Teaser Trailer: A Land At War
Kampfkrebs has been working diligently on a new line of videos for faction intros. We wanted to show off his talent as soon as possible. So here is the second of a number of teaser trailers he has made for us.

You can watch on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ElD6gXVSHg), or you can download a high quality version from our ftp (ftp://ftp.europabarbarorum.org/gallictrailerHQ.rar).

Oppida:
This new building was the result of the fantastic work of Kailith, whose skill and paitence in creating this beast of a wall set should be well praised. This is something that we are really excited to have, to better represent the differences and similarities between the "civilised" cultures of the mediterranean and the "barbarian" cultures of europe. The celts, though this building is also available to the Lusotannan and the Getai, did fortify their settlements to the same extent as the Hellenes or Romans, and so they can now build a higher level of wall than the "wooden wall". And now we have the ingame building to better represent the construction style of these great fortifications of the ancient world.

As with all great additions, we are constrained by what we can do and what talent we have on the team. Whilst Kailith was able to reproduce this masterpiece of a defensive structure for us in game, the animations were more difficult to alter, and so for the forseeable future the implementation is not perfect. But, as you will see for yourself, this slight problem does nothing to undermine the great work that we preview today, and which you will see in action very soon.

Re-sized Trees:
Have you been annoyed with fighting in the forests of Germania? Do you find it incomprehensible why the trees of the ancient world were all the size of sky-scrapers? Well thanks to the work of Redmeth, when playing EB, you need not fret on these problems any longer. He has re-sized all over-sized trees to something that is more suitable for the era and the game.

Holy crap, the new oppidum is awesome. I always thought something like this would be almost impossible, given the restrictions of the RTW engine.

The resized trees are a nice addition, too. Great Work!

And now, release the 1.0 version of the mother of all mods ~D

I'd like to add thanks to Drak10687 from Chivalry: Total War for his advice during the implementing of the Oppida.

And of course a great big thanks to Kailith who made it all possible.

Give those people a pat on the back for a job well done. I last played EB some time ago but moved on because the game had too many bugs at the time for me to really enjoy it. However, I have watched EB grow and develop with interest and I'm really looking forward to the release of 1.0

Oh... my... god! I'm stunned. Mind-blown. It's just awesome and more.

But I have one small comment on the video. It says "even your brother is not your friend". To me it would sound better to say something like "even your brother is an enemy" or "not even your brother is a friend". It's not a big deal, just giving my 2 cents. It's great anyway. :2thumbsup: (If the movie was just a teaser and not the actual intro-movie, then it's nothing to care about.)

Coooll!!!!!!

No more problems with fighting in my beloved forests!!!! :beam:

Excelent, the oppidum!!!! I was getting tired of the old sone walls.....
Btw, In one of my Romani campains I attacked an fort that had after the wood wall an vault and one 2nd wall made from earth. It was very cool to attack it and I would love to see more of that!! But that just happened once. It was an cool bug or is/were the team working in that?

Thanks to the team for your excelent job!!!

And are the units in the video all for gauls? Some look more helenistic or phoenician to me, but maybe is because I'm not an historician...

No, Sweboz won't get their dirty mitts on them if they want one they'll have to conquer and hold it.

bovi
10-03-2007, 16:40
However, the Getai have them. The reason why the Sweboz are not allowed them, is that there is too little evidence of them building oppida in this time period. It may be theorized that as the Gauls and Getai make them, the guys in the middle would too. But that would be only a theory.

Once again, another little teaser for all you fans who cannot wait for 1.0 to be released. If you can wait, we hope this changes your mind.

Every time I get near the Marian reforms a new update gets released.

I applaud your continuing efforts to make this an amazing mod- although you get plenty of that already, I'm sure you don't mind more- but I also feel disappointed that you don't seem to let me get Marius' mules without cheating <Wah! Throws rattle out of pram>.

Now I've got to get a new copy of RTW vanilla. I've been on BI since the old disk broke.

Yes, yes, nice walls and trees too. Does this mean I'll be able to see what's going on in those deep forests now? ~:)

Those walls are perfect. In my Aedui campaign I had to push the boundaries of my empire further than I liked into Africa, Italy, and Greece in order to gain stone-walled towns for frontier defense...no more.

If those walls have the typical missile unit bonuses of equivalent basic stone walls, Iaosatae are going to make attackers rue the day they were born.

I can see the Celts taking defense to a whole new level, with interspersed archers, slingers, and champions/gaesatae.

I think they're made of a mix of wood, earth and stone. Regarding the name, it's what we called it internally for easier referencing rest assured each faction that gets has a correct name in their respective language and great descriptions done by our historians.

It will be probably be obsolete because the script coming with EB 1.0 will be an improvement on the one released with mlp071. The mercs also had some changes done do them.

In case it will still be unbalanced in certain aspects I'll probably work on improving it for a future EB release.

Are you guys going to make new walls for all factions?
Definitely not. Poor Kailith has almost killed himself over getting these to work. Several members have tried before him, failed and left due to extreme frustration. We won't be putting anyone through that torture again. The walls are very sexy though :2thumbsup:.

I agree, trees can become monsters. It is theorized that 410 feet is highest physically possible for trees to become (it becomes impossible for a tree to 'pump' water up from the roots at a certain point) and there were probably many trees that have reached this height over time. The height of a tree depends on species and climate. In coastal regions that get lots of wet air comming in from the ocean (such as Lebanon, US Pacific Northwest, SouthPacific Islands) trees can reach their full potential.

The only place with great possiblity for giant trees on the EB map is Lebanon and by this point in time, the trees were nearly cleared away.

Due to the cold weather, species of trees, and mostly inland areas, Europe's trees, before man cleared them, would have been around 180 - 210 feet tall, taller along the coastal areas. The 'kings' of the forest could have probably reached 250+ feet, but were rare. Southern Britain lowlands would have had similar tree sizes, getting smaller as you head north.

/end tree rant

Oppida looks great.
If not for game engine limitations it would be a sloping, dirt cored wall right?

Having finally figured out how to get new walls in, surely other cultures could follow the same method?

Will you be implementing a removal of the buggy larger walls?
RTR PE managed to shoehorn the larger walls into using the standard stone wall (& siege tower) models but with the bigger wall stats for strength & missiles.

In latin, Oppida may refer specifically to fortified towns, compared to vici (villages), which was used when referring to unfortified towns. Furthermore, Caesar makes this distinction when writing about how many oppida and vici the gauls had.

The Oppida is the barbarian culture's stone wall. I'm not sure but if as the romans or greeks you take over a barbarian settlement with an oppida an upgrade the town it might transform into that culture's stone wall.

As far as i know, Britain had densely packed forests which have been described being just like a rain forest in the way that the canopies stopped a lot of sunlight coming through and that they were very very tall and densely packed. Apparently they were very dangerous places to be because of the wild animals and that when Caesar first arrived, it must of been a very daunting thing to see.

Although in general i would agree about the tree's, they can be rather weird and annoying when fighting in Northern Europe.

Awesome job on modding the walls, as it's no easy task. As far as RTW engine goes, I only know of 3 mods with modified walls (Chiv, RT3K, Sig's Rome), with EB the only one successfully releasing them (with 1.0 release). That should give a clear indication of how frustrating a task it is for those of you who dont mod.

If Vanilla experiences are anything to go by; then you will be able to upgrade the oppidum to Megala Teichea or any such thing and till that time they will remain there as Oppida. (That is if you capture an oppdium, and it gets attacked you will see the oppdium on the battlefield. At least that's what Vanilla Gaulish Stockades used to be like...)

Unfortunatly, there is a 199 hardcoded province limit, and EB is already at that limit. IIRC though, the EB2 map will be bigger, not more provinces but sort of magnified so there is more space between cities.

Blue Lotus also has new walls (and completely revamped cities, terrains and vegetation). Ra no Jidai is also trying or has already succeeded in creating new walls. There also used to be a chiese modding group, working on a chinese mod. Which had unique walls and buildings too, but they appear to have dissapeared... Also I'm not sure, but I believe FATW has also done similar things.

This is a wonderful development.

It is a much better solution than RTW standard stone walls which, although they work, look so jarringly out of place around Barbarian settlements.

Given the amount of the game that is spent conducting siege assults, Oppida should significantly improve the playing feel of E.B.

I presume the unchanged animations mentioned are those of stone walls breaking down under artillery or sap attack. A small price to pay for such a sweet feature.

Actually, that was the one of the hardest parts of the entire exercise, and Kailiths was able to create the "look and feel" of oppida, even when they came crashing down - in all but two areas. And the odds are you'll never see those graphical glitches in-game.

It has to be said. There is no praise too high for the amount of work he put into this. Walls are the most difficult beast in the entire RTW modding universe, and what Kailiths achieved is both beautiful and functional.
