View Full Version : Ok, I've screwed it all up.

Wow, I was almost through with this, and my frickin ELECTRICITY flickered, and I thought I had lost it all. Thankfully, Firefox was miraculously able to save it all. :2thumbsup:

Well, I attempted to install a fresh version of RTW+BI for another mod. I don't have much experience with RTW in this respect, so I was surprised to find out that I (apparently) couldn't install multiple instances of the game on the computer. 'Ok', I said to myself, and I backed up the entire RTW folder, and uninstalled. Afterward, I changed the target of the EB shortcut to the new folder 'Actitest'. All seemed well and good, until I got a CTD and couldn't get back into the game. *sigh*

So I thought....'hmm'... And I went ahead and installed RTW+BI. I installed it into C:/program files/activision/etc.etc. and copied it into D:/program files/activison/etc.etc. (which is where RTW was before) and tried to install a fresh version of EB over that.

NOTE:
I'm on a dial-up connection that resets every 3 hours or so, so downloading EB has become extremely tough. I have EB08-setup, EB081-patch, EB081av2Patch, and the EBv81a3 zip file.

So, I was confused, because the installer didn't ask for a directory, but it went through with it. After installing all of the patches (in the order listed above), I noticed that my old RTWvanilla+EB folder looked different from my new one, but I tried it out anyway. That led to errors (soandso screwed up at line 11), and I couldn't play. So then I was tired of the whole thing, and replaced my new EB and data folders with my old ones (which probably wasn't all that smart, as my old folders weren't for EB).

This is the state I'm in now. EB works, but it's acting oddly. I started a Casse campaign, exited out. After quiting the game entirely, I got an odd error msg about how So and so wasn't connected to the family tree. I was able to load it back up well enough, though. I checked my family tree, and all is well (though my original faction leader died in 272, don't know if that's normal).

That works all well and good, but I would feel safer if I could get a clean install in. I had a bad feeling that something must have been wrong with my EB08-setup, so I was fiddling around with it to see if I could choose directories, and I hit reset. This had the adverse effect of changing the 'soandsodiskusage' to 0.

So, yes! I think I've more or less screwed everything up. :beam:

Wow, thats quite a dilemma there.

I would think that erasing all traces of R:TW and EB from your system, and starting over fresh would be the best course of action. Who knows what folders from what install went where....

I have no idea what the "EBv81a3 zip file" you speak of is. Some have reported problems using the patch installer and get better results with the full one. You might just be better off waiting for EB 1.0. You should make a clean 1.5 RTW installation in anticipation for it though!

"Better off waiting for" ? You make it sound like it's right around the corner - and granted if you guys are using the usual definitions for the season "fall", it's not like there were too many months left...

You make it sound like it's right around the corner

Thought the same thing. Either its really just around the corner or bovi is exceptional cruel (even for EB team standards) to poor bellum. :laugh4:

Btw, said it fall or fall 2007 in the teaser?:inquisitive:

"Fall 2007"; I have the thing open right now actually. (And it is indeed the bad ass of a bad ass too. )

I said he might be better off. If he's anxious to play EB immediately, then he should download the 0.81av2 full installer and try from the start once more. Then he'll have something to play while waiting for the 1.0 to come down the pipe at least. That will take a while on dialup.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a meeting in Haag I need to attend.

Ouch.

Ouch! I know what your problem is -at least I think so.
You had a copy of EB installed, but you did not uninstall it before re-installing EB. Apparently the installed doesn't like it that way so it might have "repaired" or "modified" your build.

Thing to do: remove ALL traces of EB install through the control panel (see my guide; it covers uninstalling EB that way); remove ALL traces of RTW that way too (make sure you have a back up first if you have multiple mods installed on the same location as the one where you pointed the RTW (Vanilla) installer to!); then reinstall RTW to the same location; then reinstall EB to your desired folder.

Should update the guide with an explanation of this snag it seems...

But first: lemme know if this worked. ~;)

Oh! I didn't know it made an entry. That's good, as I was indeed planning to just go ahead and wait for 1.0. I'll try this out tonight.

EDIT:

Oh, and about the patched version being less stable, I must be one of the lucky ones. I'd never had any real problems with the install before I started screwing around with it. I think I might have had 2 CTD's through my entire time playing.

All right! Everything seems to be in working order.

I didn't install RTW again. I already had a clean install of RTW+BI earlier, so I just copied that to a new location and everything seemed to go alright after I properly uninstalled EB. I'm still using the RTW exe, so hopefully I wont get any added instability from using BI, but I ran through a few turns and didn't run into any problems.

Thanks for the help, folks! :2thumbsup:
