View Full Version : Pahlavan cavalry
I have to say that the bodyguard cavalry are simply amazing. 347 cavalry versus over 1200 Baktrian infantry and cavalry of various descriptions, 29 losses and it wasn't even a heroic victory! They kick 12 kinds of snot out of anything with sandals, hooves and whiskers. Even those Steppe Riders and their mates.
However, since their economy licks the rusty remains off a maggot's bum it does take a fair while to get it on.
Thats why we call them 'Catatanks'.

Wait till you see the Arabian 'medium' cavalrymen...
goddamned pahlavan generals. i went to war with pahlava as the seleucids and they, together with the cataphracts, are the only units i really, genuinely FEARED when i went into battle in EB. i never engaged a units of those bastards without at least 2 hetairoi units, in full charge.
elephants can be killed with javelins EASY. but then armoured elephants are totally different...

Them Pahlavans didn't scare me too much when I went up against them with Baktrian bodyguards and cav, really. I made sure never to head-on with them, and that solved way much.

They have a loose formation. You can cut through them with heavy cavalry in a wedge, though flanking units are often needed as well because of their extraordinarily high armor rating. In my Makedonian campaigns, I generally hit them head-on with hetaroi or Thessalians in a wedge, then flank with prodomai or Thessalians. Be sure to have their lances down when charging - this makes a tremendous difference.

I think they're going to have a much tighter formation in the next release... So God help me, I think i'll be charging towards my death, wedge formation or not.

Not anymore ~:joker:
In the upcoming release the Grivpanvar will only have one equal in battle. But since it won't get released anyways, well... Sweet dreams, lads :clown:

In a recent AS campaign my main army was attacked by a Pahv army with about four units of late heavy catas, and another 5-6 of their more traditional catas, backed with inf and horse archers. I was about ready to cry thinking of the damage that could do to me, but nonetheless formed my lines of pehzateroi (sp?) etc etc and waited.
The pavs put their heaviest catas in the front centre, with the other catas on the flanks, inf behind and horse archers/skirmishers out far in front.
After dispatching of the light horse with my Parthian archers, I waited as the catas slowly marched in formation towards my line.
They reached perhaps 40 metres in front of my line, and began to reform.
It is at this point I'm trying to think of some funeral literature for my general and his men...
Alas the time came, and the Catas had formed up. I waited with baited breath as they took their first few steps forward.....very slowly....
"Bah! They are mocking me!" I thought....
Once again they stopped, this time roughly 20 metres in front of my line, just enough space for them to get their lances down for the charge.
I am now hiding under my desk with my longsword in case of the worst (...ok...tapping the pause key now and again with a pen....same thing...:laugh4: )
Once again the catas start to move...again...SLOWLY!
Finally they stop to reform for a final time about 10m from my line. I'm practically insane at this point.
Finally the catas charge!
At walking speed....
about 10 full units of catas walking very slowly into the end of my phalanx spears, all that was left was to release the heteroi and my own catas.
And low and behold the people celebrated this glorious victory for many moons to come, forever remembering the blow the silver death had inflicted on these so called "Catatanks". Huzah! (I had a cigarette and felt quite please the battle AI decided to screw itself over so greatly on this particular occasion).
I bet they'd be damn scary with some half capable leadership though, perhaps Pahv for my first 1.0 campaign hmm?

Well EB's diversity-policies is that of non-discriminative nature so feel free to pick either. EB won't discriminate ~:joker:
No matter, EB 1.0 is a myth, a conspiracy welded together by Foot and Kampfkrebs, mainly through sadistic exhibits giving the illusion of a supposed 1.0 build. If you wish to steal my beloved cataphracted... Sally... Err... Camel, and my harem of women (Who faithfully do the household chores ) I say have at you. I may not have a prestigious mount (*glares at russia almighty*), but make no mistake, I'll have all you heathens cut down. Is that the price you must pay for not believing in the truth?

By the way, unless you're shrewd in the business of barter, never trade with the brownie maker. He gave the big black Polish stallion to someone else and left me with a stinking she-camel. She just stands there all the time, spitting, kicking like a mule, groaning like a sex-depraved beast, eating, drinking and shitting. It's not even an Arabian dromedary, he gave me this constantly horny over-grown obese Bactrian she-camel:
