ok, ive made a new map but it doesnt work. ive read both the tutorial and the troubleshhoting guide, with no success. im modding rtw with the ltest patch on a vanilla game. i get a ctd without an error message but with a map.rwm.
i have all of the files except the merc file and the events file, which i assume are not necessary. i also had to delete regions from descr_regions as well as overhaul descr_strat. only a few regions are under faction control. the slaves control almost the entire map. the map runs from iberia all through india. and from northern france to the source of the the nile and all of saudi arabia.
it does not exceed the size limit. and there is more new land than see. i have added no features, just land and water. the file dimensions are all correct.

what do i do with map.FE (i didnt change it at all)
radar_map1 and 2, just changed their sizes to map.regions and 2x map.regions
map_roughness, i just changed the dimensions and colors. how does this file read? is there specific colors for water and land???
disasters.tga...what do i do in here, i did the same thing to it that i did to roughness. any specific colors?
also what do i do with map_trade_routes? i just cut it to fit on my map, and made all of the rest black

please help! i will work on this over the weekend, but if i fail, i will check this again on monday.

aargh this weeks favourite topic seems to be non-working campaign maps..

mercs and event files are probably necessary but you can just have completely empty text files for them.

You can leave in the old map.FE and its size doesn't matter.
You can delete (or just re-name) the radar maps - they are not essential but can cause problems if too large.

disasters.tga, roughness and trade_routes all need to be the right size but can all just be plain black.

If it generated a new map.rwm it isn't to do with landmass / sea problem.

It could be leaders names if you changed any or moved them to different (wrong) faction. It can still be problems with the colours of regions not tying up between the map_regions.tga and the regions text file, strangely some minor errors in that like having an extra colour still allow it to generate a map.rwm!

thanks. well i actually redid the whole map from scratch and got it working. i now face several problems.

how do you smoothe the edges where land meets sea? my edges are really sharp in the game and look unnatural.

another issue is that the map seems just a pixel off. by this i mean rivers/cliffs dont look exactly in the same place as on the original map. how exactly do you go about resizing and adding to the vanilla map? what process do you use to get everything aligned exactly? i just expanded the image to the right size and pasted to old map into a corner of the new map, but like i said, the edges dont exactly match up between the files.
i would post images of this, but i dunno how to do it...
ill try to figure it out myself, but any tips would be cool.

Cliffs trial and error I think sorry - if you have Photoshop of Elements its method of re-sizing is more in line with what game uses than PaintShopPro's, but depending on percentage you're changing by you still might not end up 'correct'.

You can re-size the larger maps down to act as layer for the smaller maps to try and align things but that isn't 100% accurate.

The sea edges see:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=70584
most of that thread I'm afraid. Basically you need to go manually around map_heights.tga tweaking things. If you scaled up the map_heights originally you'll have everything in 2 pixel jumps when it could be in 1 pixel steps, so you can add detail that way. you can also smooth coast off by having deeper blue sea colours in map_heights as that post explains.

here are some of my pictures of the problem.
my best attempt

just to show off my addition to the map and the rough sea adges

a pathetic attempt at alignment

if i cant solve this alignment problem ill just run with the top map. ironically, the only misalignment thats noticeable is the cliff on Corsica!
