You are going to add many new units, redo the Sweboz unit tree, but I want to know what happens with old units. Will they remain or will you remove a lot of them? Please, tell some units which will be removed. I know about equites ambakaro from the worst unit thread.

Well we lumped all horse archers in one unit like all catphracts. Most celtic units have been killed also (because they were overpowered) there are only 2 remaining : spear-warband and sword-warband. The camillan and polybian roman roster have been deleted to make some room. And the hellenic has to drop some units also, no more argyraspidai, thorakitai, hetairoi, prodromoi etc....

Okay I don't really know, I imagine one or two of the less useful/common EB units may have been removed, and I'm sure there are still a few "placeholder" units around. IIRC the team did plan the extra units beforehand though, and therefore do have at least SOME free unit slots.
Wait for someone in the know for a definitive answer though, although I'm sure they'll be loathe to share their secrets when it comes to unit roster details :smash:
I give you teasers and you want more?
No wait, that's what teasers are for.
Well as Spendios said, we have removed many units as we feel that our previous unit list was just too complex and we wanted to appeal to a wider audience.

I bet the aliens who build the pyramids are making their entrance?
Yeah. I joined just to moan a little about the sweboz units. I don't really understand how the "Wodanawulfoz" cost 2258 to recruit when there is only about 30 of them, they only have a shield as armour and they suck against most gallic units. e.g gallic northern-swordsmen cost 1400, 60 units, kill "Wodanawulfoz" quite easily. There is a similar problem with the "Swardimannoz" who cost 2026 but are actually relatively useless compared to other units, they're only good against roman units etc. but even then they're not that great.
The merjoz could maybe do with a little tweaking as well but not as much as the 2 above mention units. Am I missing something? Is there some kind of a secret to these units?
Andronikos
10-06-2007, 18:36
Wodanafulfoz are a fierce unit and lower enemies morale. Their celtic counterparts are pictone neitos. You should use them against low morale enemy and you can rout enemy units before they can cause high casualities. And yes swardimannoz are good agaist armoured oponents.
kk. yes thats all good i suppose but the prices still seem a little odd to me considering they both have so little armour and not such a large unit size. The units aren't very good against the gauls though. having bit of difficulty with gauls as Wodanawulfoz and Swardimannoz aren't usually worth it when i could buy 2 units of spearmen instead. Don't seem to be many units to face the gauls with round tier 2-3. The aedui and arverni units usually have higher morale than there roman counterparts.

Ignore recruitment costs, either you've got enough for "an army" or you haven't.
It's the upkeep you want to pay attention to, that's what'll make or break your military and economy.
dont u guys know we dont need ninjas!? we aready have battlefield assassins their name is slingers!
they're both above 500. pretty expensive. I just don't understand what the basis is for their costs. They drive a hard bargain or something?

I haven't played a Sweboz campaign in a while but IIRC, the Wodan guys are shock troops and give the enemy hell of a morale hit if you can charge to their flanks or ambush them or something, the other guys are armed with clubs so I would imagine their roll is as anti-armour infantry and again, shock troops.
I would expect both units to have relatively high morale consequently, however I'm certainly no expert. Regardless this seems a little off topic, try this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=86612) or perhaps the stickied suggestions thread.

the Swardimannoz were barely different from the Clubmen, who were low morale/training in .82a... in the next release, the clubmen are now more specialized warriors of better training since many would use clubs who were not just poor (clubmen had swords on their belt on Trajan's column, yet chose to wield clubs) and the Swardimannoz will become a fanatic version who intimidates the enemy, so they will be much more useful... I agree there would be no reason to build that regional if it didn't have something extra to offer, thus why I have reformed
the Wodanawulfoz are suppose to intimidate the enemy and already have very high stats because they're suppose to be fanatic / elite warriors who use their role as "Terrifying warriors" (seen in the Wild Hunt mythology which is far more common than from Germanic alone) also known as a Ghost army to scare warriors unaccustomed to such practices, similar shock to naked warfare, which they also do. They are no longer available anywhere except Silesia (Silengo?), so thus the unique practice of night raiders using "terrifying warrior" imagery is isolated to the actual reference of the Hari by Tacitus, although the name Hari is much debated, and I have thus circumvented that problem... I in-fact use a name from Beowulf for Grendel : Skaduganganz ~:) I have renamed them "Night walkers" instead of Wodanawulfoz because they don't necessarily have any association with Wodan other than his patronage of frenzied warriors in estatic trance and the Wolf-skin is a different concept from "Terrifying warriors", historically, as well as what will be implemented. There is still much debate left to see the Wolf-skin unit realized (although Blank, our wonderful artist has already created one) since they'd be very rare, even if there is a massive amount of Indo-European cultural reference and references to berserkr-like cults after the Migration Era.
I forgot to mention : don't put the Wodanawulfoz on your frontline : they don't have armor and thus won't last long in such a role... use them for flanking manuevers especially and watch the enemy panic and get slaughtered (hopefully).
I have slain that horrible unit of the Merjoz which had a medieval-like axe as if from Canute's Huscarls and a totally unattested Proto-Germanic adjective-as-noun unit title... a 2-handed clubman Bear-skin champion of the name Bernoz aka Bjorn (in Old Norse) which means both "Champion" and Bear" is hopefully going to make it eventually, but that has similar problems being accepted by skeptics for the same reasons as the Wolf-skins.
I don't plan to make either of the animal-skin wearing units to be drug-crazed fanatics / berserkir, since it is much more plausable that a Hero unit would wear a skin because of style and status and thus could possibly exist, whereas the idea that being a berserkr was a common cultural theme is much harder to prove... although I must say, the Celtic element has no physical evidence for their naked fanatics- oh well. The early Germanic peoples are just cursed with a lack of interest by classical writers.
that is nice to hear. I'm looking forward to that. Interesting.:2thumbsup:
I hope Eastern Infantry are back for all Eastern factions!
:2thumbsup:
And recruitable all over the world!

Well, as someone who has been doing the cards it has been great for me this summer. I thought I would have had a mad rush getting things ready for 1.0 but it has been much easier with all the new unit groups. I cannot tell you everything right here (or the bosses will kill me) but basically the whole concept of needing recruitment maps and MIC tiers is no longer an issue. Neither is having 20 different spearmen units for the same faction. It is much more streamlined and much more straightforward to grasp for newcomers. I personally think it was getting silly when some people were even thinking of pushing the number of units up to the hardcoded 500 limit. So yeah, fewer units, less recruitment issues, more straightforward recruitment.
