i was just wondering if anyone else was finding the sheer amount of units in the game a little overwhelming? there seem to be a few units that are quite similar i was wondering why they even bothered to make them separate i.e. peasants and militia, i cant see any diference between them in the battles, they both seem to run and die as fast as each other, perhaps they should of just gone with one unit and called it peasant militia

Yes, I noticed there were a ton of units, and yes I was overwhelmed at first.

Enter unit stats:
http://www.totalwar.org/upload/MTWDemoMod/MTW-unit-info.zip

(Some computers have trouble opening it)

You will see that there is, indeed, a difference between peasants and militia. Militia have better morale and other stats.

I went through that file and re-arranged the units into the groups that appear on the TechTree (i.e. light cav, hvy cav, horse archers, etc), and ranked them in terms of their [Melee+Defense + 1/2(Charge+Morale+Armor)] and it seems to work pretty well as a ranking system.

Good luck-- its a lot to get your mind around, but it can be done.

i understand mate its just that i thought the difference wasnt big enough to justify a separate unit. admittedly having more units is definatley a bonus, cos in shogun it was allways 2 armies of similar units facing each other, perhaps CA went just a lil over the top with the amount of units

I have to agree with respect to the Heavy Cavalry, there are 6 heavy cav units with identical stats.

Otherwise, I think its fine--

Urban Militia -- attack +2, defend -1, Charge 4, Armor 1, Honor 0

Peasant-- attack -2, defend, -4, charge 4, armor 1, honor -2

There is a noticeable improvement from Peasant to Militia in both singleplayer and multi. And I should hope you dont find a super-ashi combo anywhere.

YAS compliments on your site mate. didnt knew u had such a nice site with that info.

I am wondering would u like to share information with our Khan like unitcosts, teh wrotten stats and which is available to which faction. without typing it ourselves do u have some digital format of the info.

In return it will eventually generate a nice campaign-logfile tool for the community which u r allowed to upload if u want.

Another important different is Urban Militia has bonus against armored units such as Feudal Men-At-Arm or Chilvaric Men-At-Arm. Urban Militia can win against these armored units while peasants just get slaughtered very quick.

Also, Urban Militia can fight very well against dismounted Knights.

SuicidalAibo, I am finding the different units a great boost to the game.

Spend some time looking very closely at the unit stats and you will see that each unit has it's uses.
FeudalMenAtArms and MilitiaSergeants on the face of it are almost equal both cost 150.

FMAA have +3 att +2 def 3 arm
MS have +2 att +3 def 3 arm

However FMAA have +2 morale and MS have 0.
FMAA have charge_bonus of 3 and MS 4.
MS have armour piercing weapon FMAA don't.

But FMAA have a shield modifier adding +1 to armour and def and for this they are a little more expensive on maintenance.

So you should see that 2 apparantly equal troops are quite different in their uses.
Use FMAA for engaing lightly armoured troops and ranged units.
Use MilitiaSergeants for attacking armoured units but don't get them stuck in a ruck otherwise they will rout, use them for flanking armoured units.

The thing to remember is that just 1 point difference can change the outcome of battle significantly particlalry when those numbers are small.

One other unit that is probably overlooked by many is the Woodsman. Stats make this unit look very poor, but check it's charge bonus of 8 and armour piercing weapon.
A great unit to use if struggling for cash.

The many units types allow for many different looks which is important even if the values are similar sometimes. This game covers a lot of time and space. There ought to be a bunch of units.

im not saying there shouldnt be plenty of unit types to play with. afterall variety is the spice of life, however, saying that i have had a few instances of information overload, there can be too much to remember in the heat of battle(so many units with so many diferent characteristics).

In two years you won't be feeling the information overload... you will be swirling the different combinations around like a fine port.

only 11 basic unit types so don't worry
to much about the different types.
spears ,shields, sworda and axes are the
things that make the main difference
