View Full Version : Strategic level too boring, mindless, tedious, stressful
Spending hours moving counters around is not fun.
Too much micromanagement. It is very simple to raise the religion in your province to 100% but it takes too much time to move all the counters in the right provinces. same with counter spies, assassins, emissaries. keeping garrisons, assigning titles, building the right stuff.
too much micro to do something as simple as a peace treay.
i personally like the Master of Orion 1 format, simple bars which you adjust to focus on research, industry, military, etc.
the tactical game is awesome and complex but the strategic level is such a chore. its only value is adding to the coolness factor of the tacitical game. invading ireland or scotland is much more meaningful and epic when your england and have been eyeing those territories ever since the game started.

I tend to agree with you man. i was moving everything... my hands are tired. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
it's a CIV 3 with a damn 3d battle.
yeah
i could actually feel myself becoming stupider but moving around counters all day.
maybe that no-agents patch will fix it.
i'm just wondering, how do you make alliances without emissaries?
how do you get enough heirs since you can't have your heirs marry before they become king?
do you still get seemingly random rebellions all over? if so then its not spies that are causing it.
All I can say is.. dont like it? dont play it.
Believe it or not, most of us actually enjoy it. Its hardly mindless as it requires much planning and strategy. If you can't stomach it.. well, no one is forcing you to play it.
it is mindless.
problem: too many muslims in a province
solution: move bishop counter to province by clicking and dragging on it wait a few turns. repeat 20 times
problem: too many assassins going around.
solution: move spy counter to province by clicking and dragging it, wait a few turns. repeat 20 times
problem: not enough money.
solution: queue farm upgrades by clicking on an icon, wait a few turns. repeat 20 times
The coolness of the game is the tactical level, and the overall strategic decisions you have to make in the early game (like i said tech or build, economy or military, attack or don't).
once you get big enough there are no decisions to make, only lots and lots of clicks.
maybe you are simple-minded, seriously its ok. but i like to think
i don't like it so i am not playing it. in fact i may just return the game.
i am posting this since i care about the total war franchise and want it to become better.
maybe some developer for the next total war will read one of my posts and either find a solution to a problem or gain the motivation to find one himself (after all i may not buy the next one if i still have to waste my brain by tedious click click clicking)
Good- return it and stop your whining. You've started 3 threads in the last 30mins about how you dont like the SP campaign.
Like your sliders idea is some great improvement.... Set sliders and wait. That sounds boring to me- Id rather do something besides set some sliders and stare at a computer screen for the next 3 hours. I remember reading in the history books about how kings and rulers set sliders and arbitrarily determined what percentages they would devote their economy to. Thats so lame.
