BUG REPORT
---------------------------------------
2 bugs have been found which u could correct yourself:
the first unit in the unitbmp folder must be changed from "AbyssinianGuard2.bmp". into "AbyssinianGuard.bmp".
second is the swissarmouredpikemen which name is not the same as the name in the unitstatsfile. its the difefrence between armor and armour .... perhaps this info is valuable for my main buddy Target as well http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hans,
Khan has been gracious enough to share his hard work-- the program will show you all of the unit stats in MTW so that you can compare them against eachother.
It is a GREAT resource, and Magyar, it is much appreciated.

THANKS MUCH to all involved.
Just one thing, it might make it a little clearer to the non-tech types.
If they've got the bandwidth then they should simply d/l Package.zip (with the setup routine); and if the don't have the bandwidth but have the patience to d/l Package.zip.
Re the Unit bitmap file, your instructions should make it clear that the directory/foler, UNITbmp, needs to be created.
If they use the setup routine, they'll be bugging, "where's the folder, where's the folder"!! ;-)
Thanks again!!
Hmm some things still can't be right:
http://www.wam.umd.edu/~jinman/huh.gif
How can the Base Strength for Billmen be 1 and the Base Strength for SwissArmouredPikemen be 80?
Heck, almost every unit has as Base Strength of around 60 or greater. What gives with Billmen? Bug?
Another bug: Use your Up and Down arrow keys to scroll through the right-side list - some values change depending on if you go Up to a unit or Down to it: For example, I can get the Futuwwa to show 100 unit size or 60 or 40 unit size depending on if I'm scrolling up to them or down to them with the arrow keys. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

This is great! Thanks you rock
And the thing I've always wondered: Which are better, OrderFoot or ItalInf. Apparently for the same price the OrderFoot has much better Base Strength (whatever that does) and Morale Bonus:
http://www.wam.umd.edu/~jinman/aha.gif
So I guess that means there's no real benefit to using Italian Infantry...?

JROCK 2nd, seems so. see comment i post with HACH. u dont knwo how other bonusses are calculated like the def bonus for the ranks.
still the tool shows thatw e have a good thing to discuss, and .... dont shoot teh messenger
I'm just helping you bug-test it, bro. No harm to the messenger. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Nice Magy. Neat work.
PS: there seems to be some minor glitches in the update/refreshing of unit icons when selecting.

Hope you've got cable/dsl.
Do this:
a) d/l package.zip
b) Ask yourself am I familiar with the .zip extension? Or, WinZip or WinAce?
If not, then do a Google search for WinZip or WinAce. I prefer WinAce, so we'll use that. The instructions below are basically the same for both programs.
Google will find the Homepage for WinAce. Download the free trial version. Follow the instructions to install (quite simple and easy). Read the Instructions/Help files for the software (not necessary for this exercise).
c) After installing WinAce, find "package.zip" and double click it. WinAce should open up a window. If you get a "nag" screen (cause its trialware), just go to the far upper right corner and click "return". You s/b at the WinAce window where you'll see a folder named "package".
Double-click the folder, it will open and you now see a folder named "support" and three files. Double-click the file named "setup.exe". The setup routine will start. You installed MTW and WinAce, I believe you can handle it from here.
[BTW, if you have anti-virus software, make it a habit when d/l files to use it on all d/led file prior to double-clicking them. I presume you know how to do this.]
d) After installing, presuming you've already d/led the Unit Stat and Unit Bitmap files (Steps 2 and 3 at the Medieval Tool site). Find the Unit Stat file, Crusaders_unit_by_Yas.zip, and double-click it. WinAce opens again. Get rid of the "nag" screen. Click "return" like before. Right-click the file, click "Extract To..". Locate and highlight the folder where you've installed Medieval Tool. Click "ok". Close WinAce.
Next, I'm going to keep this simple rather than direct. Open "My Computer" (or whatever its called in XP if that's your operating system). In other words go to the folder where you've installed "Medieval Tool". (In my case its, e:\games\Total War Tools\Project1\)
In that folder "create" a new folder, named, "UNITbmp" exactly as typed (probably not necessary, but keeping it simple).
Now, locate the Unit bitmap file, "UNITbmp.zip". Double-click, Extract To..., locate the folder you just created "UNITbmp", click "ok".
Your done! Now simply locate the file "TW v0.1.exe" and double click it.
Hope this was clear.

Fast, it should never be the aim of a wolf to express every idea/thinking he undregoes in here. it smells like spamming, some may even accuse u of being your Khan and advertising about him all the time http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
RUN TIME ERROR 53 means that there is a datafile missing, if i am not mistaken.
Ok i understand http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Programs and tools alike should get advertised though?
U have put much hard work into it as ever.
But i was just xpressin probs i was havin, and i know many basic in computers skills will have the same.
Well i better tidy the DEN! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
*Runs off before his Khan's teeth bite FasT*
Good work but WHY WHY WHY are the units green and pink. That's the worst colour combination ever.
And there's a bug, the pic of the Abyssinian Guard is always the one of the unit chosen before.
I'm very interested in Rows at the Moment particuarly as i bought the Strategy Guide.
It goes a lot more into the Combat formula and how things are worked out etc than the STW Strategy Guide.
I'd be willing to type it all out and post it if i get enough requests as it would take me a couple of Hours Probably.
Back to rows.
Referring to the Strategy Guide i have became interested in the Rows for Men at Arms and not Pike and spearmen as they are well explained.
Spearmen should always be 4 Rows.
Pikemen 6.
I did 6 an experiment last night with my Janissary Heavy Infantry unit against a Byzantine Infantry Unit.
6 fights same field'same map'same conditions every time.
Engage at Will.
==================
Heavy Infantry defending
2 rows
3 rows
4 rows
Hold Formation
===============
2 Rows
3 rows
4 rows
The Janis kicked ass in 2 rows every time'and being honest there was'nt much difference between the Kills no matter if EAW or HF.They did'nt do so well in 3 or 4 rows and sometimes lost too.
And they even are not Swordsmen/Men at Arms who the Guide says should be in Long rows to Flank the sides and at Engage at will.
I was just experimenting.
Rows/Depth and length of Front are so so so important in this Game.
Hachiman
P.S Enough requests and i'll post the Combat Formula Tomorrow.

Does this Programme do anything at all the MTW Game Folders?
I have crashed to Desktop 7 times out of 7 in Gamespy since installing it????
As soon as i click on join or Host i am back to Desktop.
Is it coincidence?
I am also get the Runtime 53 error
There seems to be a glitch with the offset of the lists or the keyup/keydown events. You don't get this error if you use the mouse to click on each unit type.
To replicate it, use the arrows to scroll up/down. When you get to the top of the list (abys. guards) you can still go up one extra space. Abyss Guards will say that all factions can get them. When you click up once more, you get the true unit stats.
Wicked tool otherwise.

How do you fix the drop to desktop issue with CrapSpy? Mine started doing it again now too. It's SO frustrating.
Also, I already mentioned the arrowkey scrolling bug in the UnitCompare program.

The tool does nt do anything else than reading a file created by Yas Terazawa, which is as well available in the rootfolder of medieval TW.
The colours of the pics can be changed but this is how they are/were and it would take to much time to change them (120 pics!). they serve no need other than some recognition.
moving in teh list is best done with the mouse. the key option is added later and npot fully tested. so use mouse.
Run time 53 error means u didnt put teh unitpics and/or unitstat file in teh right dirs.
see some post above this writing how to proper install it.

Cool, I got it to work, thanks for the tool Khan, and thanks for the detailed instructions Toranaga.
If you are getting the 53 error, you need to follow Toranaga's instructions.
I had the impression that downloading Package was all I had to do...thats not correct, you need to make 3 downloads to properly install it.
Good luck all.

I would say that the unit colours are messed up simply because CA has used uglyass colour indexes so they can replace them with the real colours when the units are used.
Either that, or the artist is colour blind.

Nice Tool.
The factors are a bit misleading though, as you don't have the shield, or rank bonuses in, and no indication of special weapons. Will be great once you have these in those.
The baseStrength that JRock mentioned is some stratmap ai thing. I've no idea what it does, or even whether it's still used.

Rank bonuses are as follows
+1 defence per supporting rank
+1 charge per supporting rank
+1 attack per 2 supporting ranks.
So a pike unit with four supporting ranks gets +4 defence, +4 attack, and +2 attack.
Since whether or not a man gets support depends on the situation, and how well formed the unit is, I'd suggest maybe having two entries, one showing the basic figures without any support, and another with max support.
The number of supporting ranks is currently 4 for pike units and 2 for spear units. However, it's a value in the units stats file, so you set it to anything you like.
Shield bonuses are as follows
Inf with small shield +1 def +1 arm
Inf with large shield +2 def +2 arm
Cav with any shield +1 def +1 arm
Pavise +3 armour only
However, if you have really good armour, a shield doesn't helps so much, so the unitstats file has a shield modifier field.
The shield effect for both armour and defence is multiplied by this. For the defence factor, fractions are disgarded, but fractional armour values are allowed.
Again anti cavalry bonuses are in the spreadsheet, but are currently
Pike +2 attack +6 defence
Spear +1 attack +4 defence
Polearm +4 attack +1 defence
Having any defence bonus against cavalry protects men from being bowled over (automatic push back) by charging cavalry.
Also some units have armour piercing weapons which is important to note.
MagyarKhans Cham
09-08-2002, 08:50
i wonder what the maximum bonus from the ranks is? is it 4 or really as max as the unit can be deployed?
