Greetings Europa Barbarorum fans.

As with all things delay's with EB 1.0's release date are to be expected, but fear not it is coming soon. "How soon?" I hear you cry. "Sooner than a kettle boiled upon Everest's peak, plus or minus a few days." is how I reply. Make of that what you will.

Thanks goes to Kampfkrebs for the great teaser trailer. To Stefan25, alin, blank, The samnite, Spartan_Warrior, Webbird, Aymar de Bois Mauri, Forgus for their work on the units previewed here, and to all members who helped research the units, their names and descriptions.

Teaser Trailer: War or Peace?
Kampfkrebs has been working diligently on a new line of videos for faction intros. We wanted to show off his talent as soon as possible. So here is the fifth of a number of teaser trailers he has made for us.

You can watch on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xlri3l5vY4) (though be paitent as it is still uploading), or you can download a high quality version from our ftp (ftp://ftp.europabarbarorum.org/sweboztrailerHQ.rar).

The Units of the Sweboz:

http://img35.picoodle.com/img/img35/9/10/8/f_German1m_8289b7b.jpg
Jugunthiz (Germanic Skirmishers)
The Jugunthiz ("Youth") is a skirmisher unit made up of young and inexperienced warriors, freemen of the lowest rank, lightly armed troops who should break up and harass enemy formations before the main battle lines meet, acting as a screen for heavier and more valuable troops.

http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/9/10/8/f_German2m_0293eb7.jpg
Skutjanz (Germanic Archers)
Skutjanz ("Shooters") are untrained Germanic warriors, hunters and freemen of the lowest rank, used to harass and break up enemy formations so other more experienced and valuable melee warriors can then get in amongst their thinned ranks and finish them.

http://img32.picoodle.com/img/img32/9/10/8/f_German3m_d5f841b.jpg
Gaizōz Frijē (Germanic Levy Spearmen)
Gaizōz Frijē ("One's own Spears") are Germanic "free" men of the lowest rank, farmers and hunters accustomed to persistent raids and ritual warfare, but their experiences in constant tribal clashes make them more effective than militia mustered by other peoples.

http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/9/10/8/f_German4m_eb4abd6.jpg
Dugunthiz (Germanic Spearmen)
The Dugunthiz are a unit of experienced and “capable” spearmen, steeled by years of constant warfare. They are well known for throwing their spears before charging in to hand-to-hand combat.

http://img39.picoodle.com/img/img39/9/10/8/f_German5m_969f23b.jpg
Druhtiz Skandzisku (Scandinavian Spearmen)
The Druhtiz Skandziksu ("Scandinavian Warband") are warriors from the North, fierce and hardy, who fight well and perform better than other spearmen in a charge, but are often difficult to control.

http://img32.picoodle.com/img/img32/9/10/8/f_German6m_3d9d120.jpg
Dugunthiz Hattisku (Chatti Spearmen)
The Dugunthiz Hattisku ("Chatti Trusted") is a unit of experienced and “capable” spearmen, steeled by years of constant warfare. They are well known for throwing their spears before charging in to hand-to-hand combat and holding a line fast with steady morale.

http://img35.picoodle.com/img/img35/9/10/8/f_German7m_9dc4c76.jpg
Druhtiz Habukisku (Chauci Spearmen)
The Druhtiz Habukisku ("Chauci Warband") is a unit of Chauci warriors, able to perform better than other spearmen defensively, because of their unique experiences defending their native land.

http://img02.picoodle.com/img/img02/9/10/8/f_German8m_3608f04.jpg
Speutagardaz (Germanic Pikemen)
The Speutagardaz ("Pike-fence") is a unit of very disciplined warriors fighting in a very dense formation. They use the Germanic pike (speutan) - a deadly and intimidating weapon with a very long spearhead.

http://img01.picoodle.com/img/img01/9/10/8/f_German9m_f6380ab.jpg
Jugunthiz Hattisku (Chatti Club Infantry)
The Jugunthiz Hattisku ("Chatti Youth") is a unit of young and wild warriors from the Hattōz tribe, eager to prove their battle oaths through man-slaughter in order to earn experience and status and fight beside their betters. They will be most effective when deployed against armored units.

http://img28.picoodle.com/img/img28/9/10/8/f_German10m_5caf64a.jpg
Slaganz (Germanic Club Infantry)
Slaganz ("Strikers") are fierce and aggressive warriors, though lacking in discipline like most Germanic warriors because their sense of honor and bravery makes them all too eager to get into the fray. They are most effective when deployed against armored units.

http://img36.picoodle.com/img/img36/9/10/8/f_German11m_6a3e330.jpg
Skaduganganz (Germanic Naked Spearmen)
Skaduganganz ("Night-Walkers") daub their bodies and shields with pitch and black dye, giving them a frightening and otherworldly appearance. Their fierce nature combined with their shocking appearance, wild-eyed and screaming, as they charge seemingly ‘out of nowhere’ is seriously disturbing to their foes.

http://img32.picoodle.com/img/img32/9/10/8/f_German12m_0cd7d89.jpg
Druhtiz Bastarnisku (Bastarnae Shock Infantry)
The Druhtiz Bastarnisku ("Bastarnae Warband") is made up of resolute warriors, well aware of their role on the battlefield as shock troops.

http://img31.picoodle.com/img/img31/9/10/8/f_German13m_2c20373.jpg
Herunautōz (Germanic Swordsmen)
The Herunautōz ("Sword-possessors") are a unit of fierce and valiant warriors who are privileged, successful, or lucky enough to carry rare weapons among Germanic tribes: swords. They fight in dense formation, often with their own kinsmen at their side.

http://img27.picoodle.com/img/img27/9/10/8/f_German14m_a19e561.jpg
Druhtiz Herusku (Cherusci Swordsmen)
The Druhtiz Herusku is a warband composed of sword-possessing warriors from the Cherusci tribe. They have adapted to the styles of warfare of their neighbors and can form a denser shieldwall than other tribes, which gives them a decisive defensive advantage.

http://img33.picoodle.com/img/img33/9/10/8/f_German15m_9bfa909.jpg
Thegnōz Drugulē (Germanic Heavy Infantry)
Thegnōz Drugulē ("Mercenary Thanes"), often called herthaganautōz ("hearth-companions") by their lord, are the Germanic tribes' best warriors. They are wealthy, powerful men, fiercely loyal to their lord and equipped with the best weapons and armor.

http://img37.picoodle.com/img/img37/9/10/8/f_German16m_69d582e.jpg
Herthaganautōz (Germanic Bodyguard Infantry)
Herthaganautōz, often called thegnōz ("thanes") in a general sense, are the Germanic tribes' best warriors. They are wealthy, powerful men, fiercely loyal to their lord and equipped with the best weapons and armor.

http://img30.picoodle.com/img/img30/9/10/8/f_German17m_4730a15.jpg
Ridanz (Germanic Light Cavalry)
Ridanz ("Riders") are excellent light cavalry, useful as scouts, as well as at harassing enemy formations before the main battle lines with their throwing spears.

http://img02.picoodle.com/img/img02/9/10/8/f_German18m_04844de.jpg
Marhathegnōz (Germanic Heavy Cavalry)
Marhathegnoz ("Warhorse-thanes") are mounted professional warriors from Germanic tribes who possess the best arms and armor available, flocking to their war-leader’s banner because of his honor and success in battle.

And to lead the armies of the Sweboz to unite the tribe, the Lesser General and the Family Member:

They are fabulous!

But where are Celto-Germanic spearmans? (I am in love with that unit since I played for Aedui) Will they still be available? And only reason why they are not in this preview is because there were no changes on them made?

One of two best teasers. The second is the sabean. When I posted the thread unit changes I did not wanted to be too curious, but you have shown many new units (gallic) but did not say what will be done with old units (which I like). So this teaser is simply beautiful and tells a lot about germanic faction. I like those units and believe that hardcore german fans will be satisfied too.
If there were some mark which units are pre-reform and which post-reform (or whether there is a germanic reform) it would be even better.

Interesting overhaul and complete translation overhaul which is in part sadly not correct-at least by the translations i have at hand..
But i still see no unit of wolf or bear-warriors:no:
I thought this decission was made a long time ago, or is the unit list not complete and you hold a "special" unit back?
Bear and/or wolf-warriors should definately be in.
And...
@blitz
You surely know that long flowing hair was "reserved" for the nobles with the notably exception of the chatti youths. I see many units with those hairstyle, so what is the reason for this?

It was prompted by Hooah's request, I thought I'd respond in the same language. And Dawn of War is excellent, particularly with Dark Crusade.

Foot
10-09-2007, 20:49
God, I hated dark crusade. Was it just me or did it get rid of cover? Personally I would have gone the other way: playing winter assault with the imperial guard was a fantastic exercise of moving from cover to cover.

bovi
10-09-2007, 20:53
Think it was just you, there was definitely cover, but in varying amounts depending on map. Also, you couldn't create more of it the way you do in Company of Heroes. That game seriously rules.

"Sooner than a kettle boiled upon Everest's peak, plus or minus a few days."

Taking into account that water will boil in about 2 seconds (even though its cold) at the top of Everest's peak because of the extremely low pressure. and the fact that the definition of "a few" is:
few (fyhttp://img.tfd.com/hm/GIF/oomacr.gif)play_w("F0096700")adj. few·er, few·est 1. Amounting to or consisting of a small number: one of my few bad habits.
2. Being more than one but indefinitely small in number: bowled a few strings.

i expect EB 1.0 in no time! and if i dont get it befor a few days after 2 seconds from when the post was made, i'm gonna be pissed and demand my hard earned money back! :whip::whip::whip:

Looks great as always guys.

Just one point, I don't know what's going on with the videos I download, but sometimes they're pretty choppy. I was playing them with VLC, then that was choppy/freezy, so I tried winamp, that was okay for a couple, now that's doing the same thing, so I tried windows media, same thing.

I watch a lot of movies/TV shows on my computer, and never really have this problem with anything else.

Just a heads up.

btw... what happened to the Axe guys? Did they get the axe???

blitzkrieg80
10-10-2007, 01:20
yes the Huscarl from out of the Middle Ages got the axe.. but eventually should be replaced by a 2-handed clubman variant Bernoz (ON Bjorn) which means "Champion" and "Bear" and will hopefully tote a bear-skin ~:)

someone mentioned the Celto-Germanic spearmen, no they were left as is graphically, thus why they aren't on the list, although their name now is all 1 language and match sweetly with the Germanic spears:
Gaizoz Frije (One's own/Free Spears)
Gaizoz Alje (Foreign Spears)

Interesting overhaul and complete translation overhaul which is in part sadly not correct-at least by the translations i have at hand..

You surely know that long flowing hair was "reserved" for the nobles with the notably exception of the chatti youths. I see many units with those hairstyle, so what is the reason for this?

ok, what translation do you think is "sadly" incorrect? I hope the basis isn't the fact that it's not High German. what resource do you have "at hand"? was it published anywhere near 2003 as the one I have A Handbook of Germanic Etymology by Vladimir Orel? I have had to bust ass to pump out so many names, it's amazing how much wasn't done, anyways, so I'd be happy to correct anything that I might have overlooked, especially anything based in morphological evidence throughout Germanic cognates.

the bear and wolf warriors were not completed in time for the 1.0 build, but they should hopefully make it into subsequent builds, but there is a huge debate and skepticism keeping them from being implemented, despite great artwork by Blank for 1 (because he gets stuff done before they're approved- he's that good! ~:) that's not really sarcasm- Blank is that cool). the Cimbri regional cavalry also will not make it into 1.0.

What is your source for "flowing hair was 'reserved' for the nobles"? AFAIK, the only reason any units currently have flowing hair currently (besides the Chatti youth/"unproven" who are referenced by Tacitus) is for style and variation. What should they have, all Suebic knots so they're all the same, even if they aren't Suebic? Or would the flat-tops of the old "Hearth" be better? It doesn't make sense to remove helmets from units just to see their hair, so unfortunately we don't have many options. We know from sources such as the the "long-hairs" of the Goths and Franks that long hair was abound, never heard of any specific hairstyle-enforcement except maybe the Chatti, which by the way Tacitus phrases it, most of them chose to do it, so lazy / less proud Chatti didn't even do it. I'm open on this, so please enlighten me.

[edit]
ok, I found a quote from one of my favorite books that is reminiscent of what you're saying concerning hair:

"The Origo Gothica of the sixth century still remembered the Gothic leaders of the the early period, the generosi, as a stratum that it falsely equated with Getic-Thracian nobility of the pilleati. These reges of Getic prehistory were in fact subordinated to an authority clearly resembling the Tervingian judgeship. Ulfias's reiks and Cassiodorus's Gothic kings personify the upper stratum from which the Origo Gothica distinguished 'the middlings' (mediocres). In the sixth century these are called 'the long-haired or curly-haired' (capillati); their equivalents are the free men of the biblical Gothic, the frijai, who were described in the fouth century as 'hair-shaking' tribal warriors. The hair (skuft) of the Goths was bound into a knot. Even the princely warrior on the Pietroasa bowl sports the same hairstyle; his rich hair is tired in three knots. Comparable to the Gothic 'curly-haired' are the Vandal Hasdingi, before the name was monopolized by the royal family of the Vandals, after the fashion of the Merovingian 'long-haired' kings. The contrast between Goths and Romans emerges from the Gothic verb kapillon, which in the Tervingian 'military slang' meant something like 'getting a Roman haircut,' so that the Goth wore his hair (capilli) in the Roman manner" (102-103) Herwig Wolfram. History of the Goths.

"We know the name of honor of the Gothic freemen from their songs: they were called the 'curly-haired or long haired ones' (capiillati)" (Wolfram 301).

Obviously from Wolfram's point of view, the freeman had "long-hair," so that doesn't really mean anything in a roster full of freemen. My question is this: what else should it be? Surely Roman haircuts shouldn't exist in 275BC for the Sweboz. Are you saying it should be bound, even though it is invisible under the helmet?

Centurio Nixalsverdrus

Maybe I should do Carthage first.

There are changes pending on almost every faction. Deciding not to play the Sweboz because a few items are still on the docket is like refusing to drink a draft beer that's 2% less full than another. Except in this case, you don't even know whether the Carthage Beer has more volume than the Sweboz beer (and it doesn't).

Hold on blitz, that was just a comment - you don't need to see this as an attack.

I will find my sources about the long flowing hair and as you surely know the suebian knot was not reserved for suebian tribesmen only. The question is not long hair or not, but free flowing hair. Germanic free men surely had long hair, but from my sources only nobles let it flow freely. Had to do with religious aspects as well. The franks and goths are a little bit out of timeframe though. I never suggested to remove the helmets by the way. There are several other hairstyles with knots-it doesn't have to be the suebian one.
About the translation you should know by the work i've done that i didn't use high german, so i'm not sure what you want me to say with this comment.
Discussions about wolf and bear warriors?
Sounds irritating, as all people who learned a little about germanics b.c. agree with those totem warriors.

Take care.

Is that elite spear unit using a phalanx formation?
I miss germanic lancemen, they were great. Why did you remove them?

Hi SaFe. Wolf and Bear units of some type or another might be seen in 1.1 (hint hint).

I got tired of literature and thus Paullus and I based all these units from the archaeological data available to us. Note that our analysis was conservative, in that the sources for most units come from 350-150 B.C., therefore not allowing any later developments to influence the thinking.

There are no Franks or Goths... what exactly are you referring to?

Just one point, I don't know what's going on with the videos I download, but sometimes they're pretty choppy. I was playing them with VLC, then that was choppy/freezy, so I tried winamp, that was okay for a couple, now that's doing the same thing, so I tried windows media, same thing.

I watch a lot of movies/TV shows on my computer, and never really have this problem with anything else.

Just a heads up.I would suggest Zoom Player (http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml#STANDARD); hasn't let me down thus far.

You surely know that long flowing hair was "reserved" for the nobles with the notably exception of the chatti youths. I see many units with those hairstyle, so what is the reason for this?

Safe, I find this an odd comment.
Lots of germanic units made under your command also had long flowing hair...

Why is this an odd comment?
I've read more books and descriptions and talked a lot to several archaelogical members of the Ladenburg castell since the time the units were first created - this was 2005 - long time ago.

I will take a look at my books and give you/blitz the data, but this is not so important.
If you want them with long flowing hair so leave it that way.

@Urnamma
Nice to hear about the wolf and bear warriors.
I really can't imagine those units are disputable.
