Hi everyone.
I'm playing a heavy modded RTW 1.5 game and I'm experiencing a weird crash to desktop after some turns, always when I press the end turn button.
I can resume the game because the autosave, but then, in the next three turns or so, the CTD hits again.
-show_err doesn't say anything.
The CTD happens only when I press the end of turn button and only if I'm playing as the greek_cities faction.
I checked the "A modder's guide to CTD" thread and found tons and tons of bugs :embarassed: that I already fixed, but unfortunately for me and my dream of a greek Mare Nostrum, the CTD is still there.
Can someone help me, please? :help:
In this 3 or so turns happens something that not fixed. And if you experience it only with greeks, this faction or culture related.
Actually I had only one end-turn-crash, that was bad text related.
There are many possible errors that can cause it, so it's a hard to say what exactly. (at least for me).
Also how much modded? After changing what bug started to occur? This can really helps, especially if you had backup, don't you?

i had a problem similar to this. a crash every so often after pressing next turn. my problem however was not faction specific. what occured in my case was that i had accidently deleted all traces of the brutii and scipii factions from descr strat. i didnt even leave faction+ denarii. this caused the crash, maybe you did the same thing.

Thanks for your responses.
Charge:
Can't go back. I modded tons of things and tested almost everything but not so extensively (anyways, this problem only happens with one faction and around the 20-30th turn, so it not that easy to catch).
Also, I'm almost sure it's not culture related because I played with Macedon with no problems. And no city related because I wiped out the greeks with the macedons retaining all their usual cities without a crash.
Lucky_Shotz:
That's typical on me, but not this time. Just checked, apparently I have no problem with desc_strat. Also checked names, descr_names and descr_names_lookup.
What can crash the game after some turns while in strategic map and be faction related? :juggle2:

Traits and ancillaries possibly, back up files and delete the entire trigger sections of both files.
Have you got any settlements that are likely to revolt before crash?
Have you got script?
EDIT: oh and making some changes to data files and then trying to play on old map.rwm can give 'random' crash problem. Might be worth deleting that and trying again.
More questions does it fall over if you run it on -ai? Or just if you are physically playing as them?

Can't go back
Always back up. Always!
Reminds me of ER's sig, cool modders make frequent backups

No possible revolts that I know, no scripts and, opposed to my bad habit of not doing enough backups, I have the good one of always deleting map.rwm.
I'll restore tomorrow original traits and ancillaries and see but I don't think that's the problem. I rechecked the files and only made some very minor changes there.
Anyways, I will try that. It's a very minor effort compared with what I've already done trying to hunt down this bug.
Oh, and played one game on -ai (thanks, didn't know of that switch) and apparently no crash, although the ai was defeated in 244 BC, lol.
When I play I use to crash around 256 BC or so.
I'll keep in contact. Thanks again, guys.

check the rebel-factions/faction-creator in descr_regions, if you and only you cause a crash than its probably some sort of UI matter (as in "you scroll over ..."), try setting like all rebels/owners to the same rebels/faction(any faction you know is in the game!)
test if it still happens than ... (just a (wild) guess, but faction-creator and rebels caused me similair problems wich I never have been able to fully pin down)

Thank you, thank you everyone, I got it! w00t! :2thumbsup:
Maka was right: Traits or ancillaries.
I reverted export_descr_ancillaries, export_descr_ancillary_enums, export_ancillaries, export_descr_character_traits, export_descr_VnVs_enums & export_VnVs to the originals and no more CTD!!!
Now I have to track it down and I will post what was exactly the cause.
EUREKA!!!
From the sounds of the error, you probably have two triggers with the same name, this can cause an errorless CTD when one of them is tested.

Solved! :birthday2:
The bug was caused by two ancillaries I had not included in text/export_ancillaries.txt: priest_of_Neptune2 and priest_of_Poseidon2.
And the CTD only happened to me with the greek_cities because thats the only faction with whom I build this kind of temple.
Thanks for all the help and for pointing possible solutions. While looking for the cause of this CTD sure I fixed tons of things!
Well, back to mod until the next crash! :drama1:
... and don't forget to backup it! ~D
cheers
