What is the effect of horse armour and armour types?

In the Strat Guide it lists different types or armour (Mail, Half-plate, Full-plate etc.) Does this have any effect?

Also what effect does Horse armour (Barded or Full) have?

They have no effect. They've all been factored into the unit's armour rating.
