ok, heres my first AAR.....
it will be a somewhat general AAR, and i will only cover the large battles, and just skim the small ones (display the outcome). it will be updated in small amounts, since i dont have much time for playing.... feedback is welcomed! :2thumbsup:
so here goes.......

Chapter 1- Beginnings
Welcome child, what is it that you seek?
Ah, you want to know the history of our glorious nation? Let me get my scrolls….
Well, come in, take something to eat and sit down- this may take a while.

A long time ago, there was a man named Alexander the Great. He conquered from Greece all the way to the Indies. When he died, his empire split up into many smaller empires. That’s where we come from, along from elsewhere. For many years, we were a small nation- just 3 large towns and just 3 provinces.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/beginingn.jpg

We were at the heel of one of his successor’s empires, the evil Arche Seleukia. Not much happened until the summer of 272 BC….
We got a savior- the ambitious Theodotos Baktrios.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/TB.jpg

He pledged to rid Baktria of the grip of the Arche Seleukia. He promised us that under his watch, and his descendants watch, Baktria would become a great empire!

He started to raise an army- but not to attack Arche Seleukia – we were too weak to do that! - But to attack those dammed Persians to the west of us. They were always a threat, but Theodotos would try to eradicate them from the earth before it was too late, and they would be a threat no more.
Our army was weak, and vulnerable, and we did not have many funds to pay for one, but we established alliances with our soon-to-be enemies, so we got some money.
The army wasn’t large, and we will soon be raising another one to back up our main army from the Arche Seleukia and the Persian horde.
Then, in 271 BC, we got word that our Greek allies in the west, the Koinon Hellenon, decided to break alliance with us, because of our support of Pontos, their sworn enemies. But our leader did not pay heed- they dwell far away, and are of not concern right now- but they both will feel the wrath of Baktria in the end!
In summer 270 BC, 2 years after he got in power, Theodotos leaves our capital, Baktra, under the command his son, Diodotos Baktrios.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/DB.jpg

https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/baktriaarmy1.jpg
Theodotos Baktrios turns his army, which isn’t very large, towards some wayward rebels in the south, with the inept, but older and blooded, general Patrokles Marakandaios, hoping to turn Patrokles into a suitable general to lead his second army into Persia, while the second army was being trained. What would happen, nobody would know.

Chapter 2- First Blood

The Battle of Margiana Hills- Fall 270 BC
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/locationofbattleofMH.jpg

Our leader, Theodotos Baktrios, along with Patrokles, encounter some wayward Persian rebels near a bridge crossing, in the hills of Margiana, which was then belonging to the Arche Selukia .
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/TB-battleofMH.jpg

Our leader told his Peltastai to engage the rebels first.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofMH-skirmisheraction.jpg

When they withdrew, the archers came in, firing on the rebels. When they were out, the phalanxes advanced, and the Indo-Iranian Light Cavalry rushed to put pressure on the enemy.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/indo-iranianLCcavalrycharging.jpg

Unfortunately, they got bogged down in the Persian spears while trying to retreat to make another charge, and many were lost. The same happened to the Successor Medium Cavalry.
But in the end, those Persian rebels were running from our army, as usual.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/persianarcher-spearmenfleeing.jpg

The performance of our army after the Battle of Margiana Hills was mediocre. Military analysts say we should have sustained only a few casualties, but what happened had happened, and there is no changing that. We could only pray that we did better next time.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/results-battleofMH.jpg

In summer 269, disaster struck. A massive earthquake in Baktria killed 3,646 citizens of Baktra, and damaging many buildings, but luckily the heir to the throne wasn’t harmed.
But what was worse, an army which was assembling in that area, over 1,500 trained men, was reduced to a little over 150 soldiers. Thank the gods that no generals were in that army, and our leader was in the province over, so he and his army were unharmed.

And what was more, in that same season, the province of Margiana, which used to be Arche Seleukia territory, rebelled, and Theodotos Baktrios is deciding whether to take that province, or march on Nisa, the Persian capital. It would be a hard decision- capture a city which may invoke the wrath of the Arche Seluekia, or take a city and definitely invoke the wrath of the Persians?

What will become in the coming years was prayed that they wouldn’t be as harmful as the summer of 269.

The Persian-Baktrian War- Part 1

The Battle for Nisa- Fall, 268 BC

Our leader decided to turn his army towards Nisa, the Persian capital. This would be the start of the Persian–Baktrian War.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/BattleforNisa-TB.jpg

Seeing that the enemy had many horse archers, Theodotos Baktrios decided to send in his own horse archers and horse skirmishers. Unbeknownst to us, the Persians had long range bows, so they inflicted some casualties on us which should have been avoided.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/casualties-BoNisa.jpg

He then sent in his Pantodapoi Phalangitai, or Hellenic Native Phalanx, to block off the entrance to the city with their spears. Big mistake. As the Pantodapoi Phalangitai were reforming to block it off, the Persian heavy cavalry bodyguards charged, inflicting very heavy casualties. They would have broken if it wasn’t for a heroic charge by Theodotos Baktrios and his bodyguards, along with a unit of Indo-Iranian Light Cavalry and some Median Medium Cavalry. What resulted was a huge cavalry melee.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/fray-BoNisa.jpg

They were joined by some archers giving them support, and some Thureophoroi.
But the turning point was when Successor Medium Cavalry went around and hit the Persians from the back- hard.
Finally, every Persian was dead- along with their faction leader and their faction heir.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/results-battleforNisa.jpg

Now Theodotos Baktrios and his army are recuperating, and contemplating his next move. Take another Persian city, or link up the provinces with the homeland?
Would the Persians throw everything they had against Theodotos Baktrios? Or would they sit back and let Theodotos Baktrios take over, or beg for peace?
No one knew the answer, but everyone knew it would come soon.

The Persian-Baktrian War- Part 2

The Battle for Khiva- Summer 267 BC

Our leader makes a bold move towards the new Persian capital, Khiva. It is defended by a few withered down Persian armored horse archers, along with some heavy cataphracts.

To Theodotos Baktrios’s surprise, the Persians charged, offering open battle, so he immediately sent his Thureophoroi to the front and told his Persian archer spearmen to get their spears ready. Needless to say, they repulsed the attack with some ease.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkhiva-spearmenrepulse.jpg

At one point in the battle, our left flank was dangerously exposed, and the Thureophoroi rushed forward to defend it- and just as the enemy were rounding the corner to attack us!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkhiva-spearmenvsHA.jpg

All who remained was some armored horse archers and the two enemy generals. Our cavalry charged, and after a long struggle, routed them- all but a couple of units of armored horse archers. Those units fought heroically, taking down many brave Baktrians, but it was hopeless for them to resist against our inevitable victory.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/againstthesurge.jpg

Of course, supporting our troops were hundreds of archers and horse archers. The battle wouldn’t have been won without them, and many were slain by Persian arrows.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/archersupport.jpg

Eventually, when there was only a few Persians left, the Baktrian Medium Cavalry pressed home, inflicting heavy casualties.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/bakmedcavpressinghome.jpg

The Persians retreated, and made a gallant, but futile, last stand at their city center.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/laststandofpersians.jpg

The city was captured, many Persians killed, along with another two members of Persian royalty. But our army suffered horribly. We lost many to the cataphracts and to enemy arrows. Nevertheless, we were victorious all the same, and that is what counts.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/results-battleforkhiva.jpg

Now where would Theodotos Baktrios go next? On to the rebel city in the east (from Khiva), or go north to eradicate the Persians once and for all? But for now, the army would be recuperating and being brought back to full strength for the next battle.

breaking news!!!!!!!!

we have found an Arche Seleukia spy in our capital, and executed him!
Could this mean war in a short time? Or something much worse?
Our leader has withdrawn all of our main forces to the border, and leaves a substantial garrison in Khiva.
The nation is holding their breath- with the "Grey Death" be upon us?

That's a great AAR I am reading... WELL DONE!

Nice to see the Kambojas at work (That would be the IndoIranian Light cav).
Hippotoxotai are right up there. I hope that AS doesn't attack, but if they do...

Stone forts, Lots of sphendonetai on its walls, sally each turn with them on the ramparts, watch the enemy number dwindle then after they run out of ammo, either sally or end the battle. You will be awarded a draw, but with a big part of the enemy slain, it really is a victory. Rinse and repeat until AS will either flee or be destroyed by your forces.

Just make sure that your border cities with AS have stonewalls, and plenty of sphendonetai/anatolian slingers in them.

When you have enough money to assault them, use hippotoxotai, and a lot of them. They shoot very far and their armor (both on the horse and on themselves ) means they are no slouches when it comes close and personal. They may be expensive but they are well worth it.

Build mines on Kophen, and Taxila. They bring in a lot of money.

Taxilan agema (the heavy IndoIranian horsemen) is also ONLY recruited on Taxila, so bear that in mind. Those guys are wild. First they pepper the enemy with spears, then they charge! Expensive but well worth it.

A lot of good things await a Baktrian player in India! But the no. 1 danger you must face are the Seleukeides. Only when you contain them in Messopotamia can you consider yourself safe from them.

BTW, it is great that you use Baktrioi hippeis and Kambojas. Historically Baktrians used them extensively. In fact some have suggested that the conquest of India is due to the big number of those horsemen in the Baktrian army.

A small explanation is in order... In bold the unit name used in game.

English------------------Greek transliterated--------Indian (Pali/Sanskrit)
Baktrian horsemen-------Baktrioi hippeis-------------Bahlika asvaka
IndoIranian horsemen----Kambusioi hippeis-----------Kamboja asvaka ksatriya
(Kambojan horsemen)-----------------------------------------------Ksatriya (warrior caste figthing almost exclusively on horseback or chariot) because they are mentioned as such in Hindu texts.

chapter 6- The end of the Persian-Baktrian War

After a year of tenseness on the Arche Seleukia-Bactrian border, we rested, for a year after we executed their spy who we caught in our capital, our spies have seen no activity for miles around in their territory, so it gave us some room to breathe and conclude some unfinished business.

Our leader, Theodotos Baktrios, decided to end this almost profitless war. He sent his diplomat, Dion Dionys, to the last Persian stronghold, Gava-Mazsakata. He tells Dion to offer the Persians peace and 5,000 mnai. The Persians refused. Meanwhile, Patrokles Marakandaios, under the orders of Theodotos Baktrios, gathers his army and starts towards Gava-Mazsakata. More diplomatic efforts fail, and finally, he tells Dion one last thing to offer the insolent Persians: peace- or die. The Persians refused one last time, and Patrokles Marakandaios marches his army towards Gava-Mazsakata in the spring of 266.

When Patrokles gets halfway there, he gets news from Khiva, where Theodotos Baktrios and his army were recuperating from the heavy losses they sustained while taking the city. Theodotos didn’t want more Baktrian blood spilled unnecessarily, so he wanted Patrokles to starve Gava-Mazsakata until they surrender. Our spies reported that the Persian capital could hold out for a year, so Patrokles made preparations. He reached, and besieged, the city in the summer of 265 BC. A year later, summer of 264, Gava-Mazsakata falls without resistance from those cowardly Persians.

Needless to say, we killed every Persian there, erasing the memory of them forever. With that, the Persians were eradicated, and the Persian-Baktrian War was brought to a successful conclusion.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/persiansdestroyed.jpg

With that, our leader turns his eyes towards the south, and starts preparations for a much harder conflict……

Chapter 6- Preparations
Our leader, Theodotos Baktrios, decided to move south. Our treasury after the Persian-Baktrian War was stripped of cash, to pay for the men who heroically defeated them. Our spies reported of great mines in the south, which would undoubtedly bring us much wealth, in addition to the funds needed to fund our armies.

However, those mines were controlled by the Arche Seleukia, who, in all of their Seleukian selfishness, wouldn’t let us use even a square millimeter of it. So we had no choice- we must take it by force.

Spies to the south told us of the ability of the Arche Seleukia to send great armies against her foes, ultimately crushing them. We had no intention to be crushed, so we prepared, unlike the unlucky foes of the Arche Seleukia in times past.

First, we constructed walls of stone on every city which is in risk of attack. Then we lined the walls with a great multitude of slingers and archers.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/slingersarchersonwalls.jpg

Following, we began to train huge number of soldiers, to counter their large armies. The training began immediately as the decision was made. Countless men were drafted to possibly defend, and certainly enlarge, our great nation.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/training.jpg

Finally, police patrolled the streets, looking for spies, for if word got out of what was going on, the plan was doomed, and so was our glorious nation.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/policepatrol.jpg

The plan entailed for our leader and a few other generals to lead armies into the areas which the mines were in, and the other armies would secure our borders from possible Arche Seleukia attacks. We would strike hard and fast. Surprise was the key, and we would certainly take advantage of it.

Chapter 7-The change in power

By the luck of the gods, Kophen, the site of one of two great mines and one of our targets, had rebelled and thrown off the yoke of Arche Seleukia rule in fall 254!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/kophen.jpg

However, the rebels have thrown out the weak Arche Seleukia garrison too…..
So we sent our best spy at the time, Kleander Alexandreias Oxianas, to find out who was in control of Kophen.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/spy1.jpg

We found out it was under control of a very ambitious young general, Yazdaban.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/kophenrebelgov.jpg

Imploring further, we discovered a shocking fact:
He commanded an army over 2,200 men strong, and of very good units- few of which we have never had to face before!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/kophenrebelarmy.jpg

But what was most disturbing was the three Klerouchoi Phalangitai, or Hellenic Medium Phalanx, and the Peltastai Indohellenikoi, or Indo-Hellenic Medium Skirmishers. This meant that this enemy had Greek elements, whereas all our previous enemies were eastern. This made our enemy much more dangerous.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/kophenrebelgreekunits.jpg

There was also a unit of the Taxilan Agema, or Indo-Iranian Heavy Cavalry. There have been stories of these legendary riders seeping into our lands. These much-feared cavalrymen throw spears with terrifying accuracy, then charge and enter hand-to-hand combat, in which they are drilled daily on, making then very formidable foes. That is why they are so dreaded. But just think what we could achieve if we had these renowned horsemen in our armies!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/TaxilanAgema.jpg

Runners sent the message to Theodotos Baktrios, who was in Khiva at the time, and he immediately set off for Baktra in winter of 264 BC with a small army to assemble a larger army to take Kophen, and, with the help of the gods, end our financial problems.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/TBsarmy-winter264.jpg

No one had any idea of how to counter these powerful forces, but as always, our leader, Theodotos Baktrios, had a plan of action…..

Chapter 8- practice

Theodotos Baktrios had a major problem. Since Baktria was at first a peaceful country, very few of her soldiers knew what to do when they would assault Kophen, and even fewer had battle experience.
Therefore, Theodotos decided to stage a practice run of the assault of Kophen. Fist, he constructed an exact model of Kophen- a large town with wooden walls, or at least excuses for walls.
He constructed two battering rams, and gathered the army he planned to assault Kophen with 8 units of Thureophoroi,
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/Thureophoroi.jpg

which would be the primary unit Theodotos would use in his sieges, 4 units of Pezhetairoi,
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/Pezhetairoi.jpg

a unit of slingers, two units of archers, and two units of Baktrian Medium Cavalry, along with whatever mercenaries he would pick up along the way, if he deemed to recruit them in the first place.

The assault would proceed as follows:

The Thureophoroi would push the two rams into positions on both sides of the main gate,
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/practicerun-ram.jpg

and would start to batter the walls down.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/practicerun-ramming.jpg

Once the walls were mostly battered down, the other units of Thureophoroi would move into position.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/practicerun-backup.jpg

Once the area in front of the main gate was secured, and all enemy forces have withdrawn to the town square, the Pezhetairoi would enter the town and take position of the flanks, to secure them from any flanking action by the enemy.

left flank:
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/practicerun-phalanxsecureleft.jpg

right flank:
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/practicerun-phalanxsecureright.jpg

While the other Thureophoroi entered the town and got into positions, the slingers and archers would rain upon the enemy death in arrow and stone form. When all was ready, they would cease fire, and four units of Thureophoroi would charge down the main street to capture the main square, while the four other units would advance down both side streets, two per side, and will flank the enemy.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/practicerun-chargeassault.jpg

But just in case, there would be two units of Baktrian Medium Cavalry that would be held in reserve, in the unlikely event that the enemy had the upper hand. After all, the cavalry does come to the rescue…….
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/practicerun-medcavreserve.jpg

All in all, the practice went smoothly, and Theodotos Baktrios considered his army somewhat ready and in the summer of 263, he moved out……

[ya, i know, kinda lame, but i did this to keep my fans happy....]

Chapter 9- The battle of Paropamisadai- Summer 261

Our leader, Theodotos Baktrios, was getting older. In the spring of 261, he celebrated his 50th Birthday.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/TB-gettingolder.jpg

He was also gathering his army of ten units of Thureophoroi, a unit of Baktrian Medium Cavalry, four units of Persian Archer-Spearmen, two units of slingers, and two units of archers. He decided to not use the Pezhetairoi, because he realized it would take time to get them unto place and were very clumsy units to assault a town with, and replaced them with more Thureophoroi.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/TBsarmytoassaultkophenwith.jpg

Meanwhile, our spies found a rebel army to the south of Kophen, full of archers and skirmishers, along with some light infantry.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/kophensecondrebelarmy.jpg

So he sent his grandson, Zoilos Marakandaios, to destroy this army, with a large army of mercenaries, before it could do any serious harm.

https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofparopamisadai-starting.jpg

The armies met in the summer of 261 in the hills of Paropamisadai.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofparopamisadai-location.jpg

The battle started on a bright, sunny day.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofparopamisadai-general.jpg
[I had no idea the modesty patch covered this too- honest!]

Due to the customs of many of our mercenaries with regard to modesty, and with the protest of the mothers of our great nation, when our generals went on parade, Theodotos Baktrios issued an order that all generals must cover their shields, in battle and on parade.

The battle started with Zoilos Marakandaios ordering all his mercenary horse archers to ride forward and engage the enemy with arrows and javelins.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofparopamisadai-HAskirmish.jpg

When the arrows and javelins were depleted, the horse archers drew their swords and spears and charged. Soon, they ran into trouble as the enemy unexpectedly switched from their bows to their spears, to the dismay of the horse archers.

Seeing trouble, Zoilos Marakandaios charged to the scene and rallied his troops.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofparopamisadai-generalchargi.jpg

He was just in time.
The army was wavering, seeing that their horses couldn’t beat the enemy spears. But Zoilos Marakandaios charged all over the place, inflicting great casualties upon the enemy, and eventually winning the day for Baktria.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofparopamisadai-generalcha-1.jpg
[Sorry for the lack of pictures- the battle went so fast, I didn't have much time to take many!]

In the end, great casualties were suffered on both sides.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofparopamisadai-casualties.jpg

But it was a day of victory nonetheless.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleofparopamisadai-results.jpg

Unfortunately, a unit of the mercenaries were full of soldiers who knew the rebels, so they were somewhat reluctant to kill them. Thus, 325 rebels escaped that battle, and the unit who was responsible was punished accordingly.

The battle of Paropamisadai showed Zoilos Marakandaios, Theodotos Baktrios, and the other generals that you just can’t solely rely on mercenaries to do a Baktrians job.

The battle for Kophen- Spring 260

https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/TBbesieging-winter216.jpg

In the spring of 260 BC, after a three- month siege our leader, Theodotos Baktrios, assaulted Kophen.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-starting.jpg

The battle began on a dark, overcast day.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkopeh-TB.jpg

He spoke to them, saying very encouraging words, in a speech that would be recorded for all history to know.

“My brave sons of Baktria! There lies the enemy, beyond those excuses for walls! You have drilled long for this battle, and know exactly what to do! Show no fear! Show no compassion for them! Fight hard! Fight with vigor and strength! Slay them with no pity! Between you and the enemy, there is but one flimsy wall! Now, go forwards! Go and meet the enemy! Go and fight for your families honor, and more important yet, fight for the honor of Baktria!”

The soldiers responded to these arousing words with much cheering.
And with a wave of his sword, Theodotos waved his men on.

The walls were breached in two places quite easily by our rams.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkopen-wallsbattered.jpg

The Thureophoroi moved in, encountering little resistance.
But then Theodotos noticed an enemy phalanx moving to our left flank, and quickly ordered two units of Thureophoroi to counter them, and the battle on the left flank commenced.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-leftflankbattlestar.jpg

During the entire battle, the archers and slingers gave our men support, and caused many casualties.
[i thought i took a picture of them shooting arrows?....]

Unfortunately, a unit of slingers was so eager to join the battle they went with the Thureophoroi to counter the enemy phalanx, and was, unfortunately, cut down, seeing that they had no armor and just a knife for a weapon. There were just twenty- four remaining when the battle ended.

The main body of the enemy proceeded down the main street, and four units of Thureophoroi moved in, ready for the engagement.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-battlecommencing.jpg

The battle went on the main street and on the left flank.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-melee1.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-leftflankbattlemele.jpg

On the left flank, the battle was going well- we had finally surrounded the enemy.
But then, reinforcements came.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-leftflankenemyreinf.jpg

While all of this was happening, another two units of Thureophoroi moved along the right flank, and just as they reached the plaza, the enemy sent a unit to counter them.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-rightflankbattlesta.jpg

Meanwhile, the battle on the main street raged on.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-mainbattlemelee2.jpg

And so did the battle on the right flank.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-rightflankbattlemel.jpg

Finally, the enemy forces on the main street were on the last handful of men.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-mainbattleenemyremn.jpg

Finally, both the enemy on the right flank and the main street broke, and they withdrew to the plaza, where our brave soldiers rushed to attack before they could organize.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-withdrawn.jpg

And finally the last two enemy solders in the plaza made one last stand.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-finalstand.jpg

But they were cut down, and the plaza was ours!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkopen-plazacaptured.jpg

But the battle was still going on the left flank, but we finally surrounded them, and the enemy general and his standard-bearer foolishly paused and started to pray to their gods for salvation while we surrounded them.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-leftflankbattlem-1.jpg

But the praying was to no avail-
The general was cut down, a spear through his heart killed him.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-enemygeneraldead.jpg

We finally were able to circle another unit of Thureophoroi to complete the circle.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-leftflankbattlefrie.jpg

Finally, the enemy broke, and we cut them down.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-leftflankbattleenem.jpg

In the end, the battle was won, with much fewer casualties then we expected.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-results.jpg

But the town gravediggers were going to be busy for a long time.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-casualties1.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/battleforkophen-casualties2.jpg

As soon as the town was taken, we built a homeland government, and we built mines, the source of our income for years to come.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/lvl1gov.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/mineslvl1.jpg

All in all, it was a successful battle, and now Theodotos Baktrios is going to have to look elsewhere……

Hi hooahguy, very entertaining AAR. Baktria is one of the most fun factions to play!!!

The ressources waiting 4 you in India will be very very necessary, if you wanna fight the grey death to the West. Esp. Indian archers are of big use in a war against AS....U know, elephants don´t like them bowmen playing with their lighters!

In my campaign after conquering India, I sent an attachement along the Souther coast line and conquered the cities there and on the Arab peninsula. 2 front attack on AS possible then... :beam: :whip:

One idea: It would be great to see a pic of your campaign map....

Oh, back in the days when EB was runnin´...well, different story.... Bring on the glorious reports Baktrians!:2thumbsup:

but now, presenting chapter 11........:whip:

Chapter 11: regrouping, retraining, and rethinking

After the successful conclusion of the Kophen campaign, our leader, Theodotos Baktrios sent the Thureophoroi up north back to the capitol of Baktra to retrain and regroup, while he went there himself for another business.

Gathering all his top generals together, he stated a clear fact: the Thureophoroi don’t perform very well against enemies with swords, but they perform very well against enemy cavalry units.
“We need a unit that has a spear but also has a sword, for it's easy to dodge or block a spear when you’re on foot, but it’s harder to block a sword. The Thureophoroi kill enemy infantry too slowly, which we can’t afford. What if an enemy relief army is on its way and shows up while our Thureophoroi are slowly killing the enemy inside? We need killing speed, and the Thureophoroi doesn’t have it!”

Patrokles Marakandaios made the case for keeping the Thureophoroi as the main unit in their besieging armies.
“Whether you like it or not, the Thureophoroi are very mobile, and are relatively cheap. While they don’t kill as fast as you would like, they are the backbone of our besieging armies, whether you like it or not.”

Theodotos Baktrios responded,
“Even though they are somewhat cheap, there are only three provinces which have the suitable means to recruit them in! Only the provinces of Baktria, Dayuan, and Aria can we enlist them, and we don’t even own Aria!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/hellenicspearmenrecruitment.jpg
[much thanks to the people who made the recruitment veiwer that made these pictures possible!]

However, there are eight provinces in which we can recruit the Baktrion Agema, the type of unit I will introduce to you shortly. The provinces are Baktria, Dayuan, Aria, Margiana, Sogdiane, Paropamisadai, which we just captured, Gandhara, and Sattagdydia.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/bakroyalguardrecruitment.jpg

The unit which I propose to replace the Thureophoroi is the Baktrion Agema.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/bakroyaguard.jpg

These soldiers carry with them two weapons: a spear and a sword. The spear is to obviously kill enemy cavalry, and the sword is to obviously kill enemy infantry.
They are the best of what they do, and there is little reason that there will be any disagreement for them becoming our backbone of our besieging armies in the future.”

Patrokles Marakandaios voiced his objection.
“They cost too much! We just got our main source of income! Shall we waste it all on this type of unit? For every unit of the Baktrion Agema we can train two units of Thureophoroi! Yes, I agree, the Agema may be more efficient, but it will drain our treasury as a hole drains a flask of water!”

Zoilos Marakandaios softly replied to his father,
“Father, there is no point in arguing. Even though the Agema cost more, the rate at which we’ll be able to conquer enemy cities will be much faster than with the Thureophoroi and that will make up for more than the amount it costs.”

“You spoke well son, and I see your point.” Patrokles Marakandaios responded. “With that, I concede. If need be, we will be forced to enforce a higher tax, and if that’s the case, so be it.”

“Very well, we will send the veteran Thureophoroi all over our nation, to help provide security, while we train the Agema for our next target: the town of Taksashila in the province of Gandhara, where there are also very rich mines there, as rich as the mines in Paropamisadai. Any objections? No? This meeting is dismissed.”

Chapter 12: A Disturbing Report

In the summer of 260, our spies reported a very distressing report. The city of Taksashila was full of Indian troops, which also numbered over 2,000.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/takgarrison.jpg

It was led by the general Gudarz, who was little heard of but as dangerous as an infamous one.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/takgovernor.jpg

But what was most disturbing was the two units of Sreni Pattya Yoddaha, or the Infantry Guild Warrior. These were the elite warriors of India. Fast, deadly, and much feared.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/infantryguildwarriors.jpg

But what truly struck fear into the hearts of our generals was something large and grey. Any infantry or cavalry unit can be effectively countered with many different types of units, but the three units of Indian Elephants didn't.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/indianelephants.jpg

Meanwhile, we spotted a large army in our northern borders a few years back. In the summer of 260, a large army under the grandson of Theodotos Baktrios, Agathokles Baktrios, reached the area to do battle, but lo and behold! Our Saka allies defeated the army for us! And they took heavy losses too. The only unit in the entire area was a very heavily depleted unit of Early Saka Nobles. In appreciation, we sent the 5,000 mnai, which they accepted graciously. That took care of the northern rebel problem.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/Sakanobles.jpg

So with Agathokles Baktrios returning to Baktra, Theodotos Baktrios assembled his top generals, including Agathokles Baktrios and Zoilos Marakandaios. They would make two armies to assault Taksashila. One under Zoilos Marakandaios
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/Z-M.jpg

And one under Agathokles Baktrios.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/A-B.jpg

There was going to be major risk in this operation. We would not risk assaulting the walls, since those Sreni Pattya Yoddaha would cut up our soldiers like a knife through hot butter. So we would make them come to us and defeat them in open battle, for even the best sword infantry can’t go up against a good phalanx. We would defeat their elephants and Infantry Guild Warriors in open battle, and either wipe out the entire garrison, or kill most of them, then assault with a different force specially trained for assaulting walls. That was how it was to be, and that is what was to be relied upon to gain us a victory.

Chapter 13- The Diplomatic Crisis of 259

The year of 259 got off to a bad start. The wife of Theodotos Baktrios, Agathokleia, died at the age of 64, throwing Theodotos in to deep despair for some time, despite the comforting of his family and friends.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/T-Bswifedies.jpg

But more important things were happening……

The Arche Seleukia sent a diplomat over to us, but when we asked him what he came for, he said he still has to receive the orders from his superiors of what to offer, and he only came because the weather was nice. We found it very queer and we are anxious to hear what he has to say, praying it wasn’t going to be an ultimatum of some sort.

On the topic of diplomats, Patrokles hastily decided to send a diplomat of our own, Demetrios Chomoraios, to offer an alliance with our neighbors, the Sauromatae.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/diplomattosaromatae.jpg

But when word got back to the capitol of what Patrokles had done, a rider made haste to Demetrios and told him the mission was cancelled. The reason was simple: they are the enemy of two of our allies, the Saka and the Hai.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/sauromataediplomacy.jpg

It was imperative that we cancelled that diplomatic mission, for if the alliance between the Saka and us was to cease before the appropriate time, there would be a serious crisis, since our northern border was dangerously under-guarded. Soon after that, we discovered something that put our few northern border forces on guard: a Saka army was assembling near Chach, the closest Saka town to us.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/sakanearborder.jpg

The army was small, but was composed of the type of unit we dreaded most: horse archers and regular archers.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/sakaarmynearborder.jpg

They were also led my some very competent commanders, who were guarded by something even worse than horse archers- armored horse archers.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/sakabodyguards.jpg

All this would lead to a decision Theodotos Baktrios would make as soon as Taksashila was taken.

But there was good news in the year of 259. Our first army, under Agathokles Baktrios, was finished training, and the army under Zoilos Marakandaios will soon be finished as well.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/firstarmyfinished.jpg

As you can see, the army consists of many grizzled veterans, drawn from the ranks of other units and even some green ones, but brought up to the level of the veterans by a very good training regimen that was devised by Theodotos himself. So in a year of diplomatic blackness, a glimmer of light shone- a glimmer of light that would to have to prove itself in the future years of our great nation.

Chapter 14- The Diadochoi Convention of 257

In the year of 257, the principle Diadochoi, or the successor empires, the Arche Seleukia, the Ptolemaioi, and the Makedonians put aside their swords and met in Pella, the Makedonian capitol, to discuss what has happened in the past few decades, and who ranked higher in terms of the military, economy, and the most advanced. The Makedonians ranked highest in the economy, the Arche Seleukia ranked highest in the military, and we, surprisingly, ranked highest in the most advanced category! We are the most advanced of the Diadochoi!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/mostadvancedfaction.jpg

We also drew up a map of the territories of the known world in 257. The black areas show unexplored territory.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/map-257bc.jpg

But more important things happened in 257.

The second army, under Zoilos Marakandaios, that would besiege Taksashila, was finished training, and was almost exact to the first army.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/2ndarmyready.jpg

And in the fall of 257, the two armies moved out, in the direction of Taksashila, with the entire Baktrian kingdom waiting anxiously for what was to come in the coming years, and in the upcoming battle.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/twoarmiesmovingout.jpg

EDIT: i also needed a way how to put the map in the AAR without making it seem too obvious- thus the black areas.

Hooahguy
12-26-2007, 22:21
ok, i lied again- next chapter after this one......

Chapter 15- winter of 256 and spring of 255- Final Preparations

The two armies reached the vicinity of Kophen in the fall of 256, and set up winter camp there. There was much nervous chatter there, and everyone was nervous of what was to come, as they did some final preparations before they besieged Taksashila.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/thecamp.jpg

They did three things: they got more supplies, briefed the officers of what the plan was, and they sent spies once more to check on the status of the garrison in Taksashila.

The plan was simple: we would meet the enemy on more favorable ground, outside their city, and slaughter them there. But in case one army was routed, the second army would be there to fill in the lines, but the armies had to be exactly alike, because both had to be able to stand up for their own since we did not know against which army the garrison would sally out to attack.
Both armies would be stationed on the same side of the wall, the western side, so when the reinforcements came, they wouldn’t have to travel around the city just to relieve the army which was under attack. The reinforcements would come immediately and fresh with the energy to continue the battle.
To deal with the elephants, the slingers would be positioned on the flanks to rain their stones on the elephant’s undersides, the most vulnerable part of the elephant, as they came out of the gates. The Persian Archer-Spearmen would rain fire arrows upon the elephants as to drive them crazy, in the hopes that the elephants that weren’t killed by the stones would run amok and kill their own men. All this would make them fall either at the gates or shortly afterwards.
The other infantry would take care of the Infantry Guild Warriors and the other enemy troops, and the cavalry would ride forth and cut the enemy down as they fled. Thus, we would triumph over the Taksashilans and their elephants.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/thetakstrategy.jpg
(Z–M is Zoilos Marakandaios, and A–B is Agathokles Baktrios)

When the spies returned, what they found was shocking. Recently, there was a plague in Taksashila, which greatly reduced the garrison, much to our relief. But the spies reported that while we were training our own troops, they retrained some of theirs and recruited some more troops. So now their garrison numbered over 2,500 strong!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/hooahguy14/newtakgarrison.jpg
(and no, im not running EB with ALEX.EXE! i thought the AI didnt retrain its troops?.....)

However, both of our armies numbered over 2,900, and our two armies combined numbered over 5,800! Zoilos Marakandaios reassured out troops with a very fine speech.

“Fear not! We outnumber them by over 3,300 men! Those elephants may be scary, but just as David and Goliath of the times of the Israelites, the small will take down the large with just small stones!” Zoilos nodded towards the hundreds of slingers that were to take part of the operation as he said that. “And furthermore, you have me and another great general to lead you! Their general rests on those brown beasts like a coward! So as we journey on in a few short months to take on the enemy, show no fear!”

That seemed to do it, for the rest of the winter, very few men showed signs of nervousness for the coming battle.

Then finally, in the early spring of 255, the two great armies broke camp and marched to the river, poised to cross it and enter the province of Gandhara on the word of our leader. There was just a few rivers and lightly forested fields in-between them and the enemy. The road to Taksashila was wide open.

so when i turned off my computer, put in the new graphics card, and hooked it up to the monitor, and turned it on. i got as far as the windows XP booting up screen. then it just went blank....... :wall:
i went into the BIOS to make sure it was running the new card and not trying to run the integrated card. it was running the new card.

and so far, my computer is gone, and with it, EB, and with it, this AAR that ive come to love so much. ~:mecry:

i dont know what to do, as i had all my files on that computer and only had the very vital ones backed up. :wall:
not including my savegame file. i know i told MAA to back up his file, but i truthfully, i never thought it would happen to me. :shame:

so as of now, the future is in doubt. im getting a tech genius to try to fix it, but i dont know if he can. i contacted tech support by email, and im going to try by phone on monday, when phone tech support is open, if i dont get an answer sooner. the techie is coming tomorrow, so ill update the situation tomorrow, hopefully.

but everyone should expect the worst, and i really thank everyone on giving me such nice replies. you really made me love this game, and im definitely going to start a new AAR if indeed this AAR is dead......
pray for me guys...... ~:(

Stay calm soldier, reinforcements are on their way. Have you tried to boot from your Windows CD/DVD and proceed in "safe" mode? If that failed with your new card then you may try put your old card again and then fire up the system First form HD, and if that fails from CD. :book:

(Forgive me, if you already know and tried this:oops: )

Your graphics card may be being set by windows at an incorrect refresh rate/screen resolution. You've got to reset it so that RTW plays at a monitor setting you support.
