View Full Version : something wrong with Sparte?

I have this weird recruitment problem : my troop selection is very limited in Sparte. I though some more requirements were added, so I cheated and built all possible buildings there, to no avail.
With highest level of MICs (5), I can recruit only : toxotai, sphendonetai, akontistai, peltastai, hoplitai, thorakitai, hippeis and spartiatai.

No tureophoroi, no hoplitai haploi ...

Is it just a messed up install?
BTW I'm reinstalling right now to see.

EDIT : And I'm playing KH.

Sparta is a strange place. Recruitment there is not the same as in all other greek mainland cities. It's not an error that they don't have access to some of the other unit types there - but they do get spartans there.

Sparta didn't accept new tactics in warfare. I do believe this is represented in game....they get no iphikrates units.

That's really limiting then, considering that Athenai is going to be besieged soon. Ferrying troops from Rhodes or Crete is dangerous.

Well more challenge, but a bit too much for my taste.

in 0.81 Makedon was in a though spot, while KH had it easy, now, it's the contrary. But I guess that's the historical setting.

Awesome. That really is how it should be. I'm glad the team addressed the fact that a deaf, blind, half-retarded monkey with no fingers and 3 toes could rule the world as KH.

They were really far too easy before.

All faction starting situations have become more difficult AFAIK. Remember that the AI Makedon you face as KH doesn't have the financial limitations that a human playing Makedon will face.

But according to Gosam, they have thorakitai... Wouldn't that be classified as a "new tactic"?

Don't look at me, I dunno.

Well, thorakitai and its lesser equivalent which I can't spell are basically re-equiped hoplites with javelins that fight in a looser formation which wouldn't be too different from traditional hoplite warfare. However, phalanxes require a larger shift in tactics and strategy along with new training methods. Basically it'd be a very large overhaul of the whole system and the Spartans I guess thought that what worked for them pretty good for the past several hundred years would still work with the proper support.

What people are complaining about....

Those four alone will make an army that doesn't have to fear anything around Hellas.

Except perhaps the real heavy cavalry from Macedonia and Thessaly.

Those are not to numerous. Use two or three units of Hoplits to pin them and prevent them from successive charges. In a pitched battle no horsemen can stand against these spearmen.

Or hire a couple groups of Merc Thessalian Cav....although I hate to think how much they cost in 1.0. It has to be somewhere around 7-8 grand, as they were ~5300 in .8x.

If your ballin though, they're quite badass.

Um this isn't related to this but it's still in Sparte too, can anyone explain why the peninsula south of Sparte is divided up between Krete, Aitola and somewhere else? Or is this just on my map? :inquisitive:

Cheers

I've been wondering that to. I think it might have something to do with an event or something that has to do with controlling Greece.

It's a way of representing Cape Taneiron.

That's a place were mercenaries came to find work, and generals to find "workers".

Because of the 4 province borders, the mercenaries of those 4 regions are avaible over there. Thus a great place if you need mercenaries.

A sort of generally recognized "mercenary bazaar", then ? Huh. Tells something of the degree that industry grew to there, I guess.

Weren't the Late Spartans fairly famous for hiring themselves out from Egypt to Italy?

Thanks Morus, I wish I'd known about that BEFORE the battle for Korinthos, nvm :laugh4:
Cheers!

I would have liked the ability to build hoplitai haploi. They take a lot of casualties in combat an thus need constant retraining.

And it's not like they're going to drive the spartiatai out of work :p
