View Full Version : Optical Illusion?

I need help. This is driving me nuts. (http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,22492511-5005375,00.html) In theory, the picture below is an optical illusion, and most people should see it rotating counter-clockwise. It's something to do with left-brain right-brain dominance. I can't see it. I look at it with one eye, then the other. I look with my peripheral vision. Nothing helps. It's going clockwise. It is! I cannot, for the life of me, look at it in a way that reverse the direction.

Help me, fellow Orgahs. Look at the image. Which way do you see it rotating? Is this a legitimate illusion, or a malformed GIF? Does anybody see it rotating counter-clockwise?

I can see her going both ways with a subtle switch in vision. Don't worry Lemur.

CW only for me, same as Lemur.

I can see it going just CW

It works for me, try to focus on the foot, then it somehow changes :dizzy2:

CountArach

Nope, can't see it.

And no babes outside the babe thread

Warmaster Horus

Erm, that's definitely clockwise for me; but my parents said they could see it counter-clockwise briefly.

Samurai Waki

Aha! I got it. You have to very closely Concentrate on the foot. And I mean close... like my eyes were practically touching my computer screen, and as soon as I noticed the change backed my head away, and now it won't change back to CW!

Faust|
10-15-2007, 21:43
I first saw it as CW. If I look at the more "outstretched" hand when it appears to be crossing the sillouhette in the "back" and imagine it instead to be crossing in the front (or vice-versa) I can switch most easily.

The CW one looks more like your looking slightly down on her, whereas the CCW one looks like your looking up at her :sweatdrop: somewhat... maybe why the CW is the first one that tends to be seen.

Hehe... now I can change the direction at will.

Blinking helps

Louis VI the Fat
10-15-2007, 21:46
I, for one, can move it in either direction at will. :knight:

Looking at just the shade helps, then you can 'switch' the direction. It's funny, I just knew it was about this illusion when I read the title. I spend half an evening looking at it last week. It took me an hour before I could change the direction. But I still can't for the life of me figure out how this illusion works. ~

Try doing it while you're staring at the head. :freak:

Mostly clockwise, with some concentration counter clockwise but it everytime she is at 3 or 9 o'clock my brain tries to make her change direction. ~D

The picture switches back and forth. From Counter-clockwise to Clockwise. it's the pic.

Sasaki Kojiro
10-15-2007, 22:29
Yeah, it's an illusion. It's easiest to get it to switch by looking at the feet. Cover up the rest of the body, then look and see which leg is passing "in front of" the other one. Then convince yourself that it's actually passing behind it.

10-15-2007, 22:36
okay, I've been staring at it for 10 minutes now, its driving me insane, I can only see it rotating CW.

Whacker
10-15-2007, 22:36
I absolutely cannot see the clockwise rotation. I guess that's fine though, because I am definitely am left-brain dominant.

Edit - I just realized I posted wrong. Fixed.

Same...

I played around a bit in Corel Draw and erm maybe this helps in some way, I found the fast rotation a bit too fast...

The question is what can we gather from the shadow?
It's closer to her foot when it moves from the right to the left, to me that means the foot is further away and when it moves closer, the shadow is outside the picture, thus she would rotate counter clockwise.

Dutch_guy
10-15-2007, 23:37
The trick is to concentrate fully on the little shadow at the bottom of the image, then you can see the counter clockwise movement.

:balloon2:

WTHell? She rotates in both CW & C CW! Just righ now I see it, then again cw...

Blodrast
10-15-2007, 23:38
I can only see the counter-clockwise. I've seen it before, and I spent 2 minutes trying to see it the other way, but couldn't, and gave up (I'm lazy that way).
I admit I didn't try to focus on just one body part.

Charge

I'm sure it rotate in two directions, changes them from time to time.

Now I see what they're doing!! At last I figured it out. Bit difficult to explain, but when you see her from behind, lifing up her left leg, the image is identical to seeing her from upfront, lifting up her right leg. Etc. etc.

Thanks, Husar, you're a genius. :jumping:

Edit: spoiler tags might be a good idea. :idea2:

I can see counter-clockwise. What's the big deal with it?

Edit: What shlin28 and Dutch_guy said works, now its clockwise.

Whacker

OK, finally got it. Concentrating on the feet didn't work at all.

I had to close the window, "visualize" the graphic moving clockwise, and then re-open it. It worked that way.

pevergreen
10-16-2007, 02:52
It changed 3 times in about 10 seconds.

I hate that picture so much.

HOLY !#$@$%@$# I FINALLY SEE THE COUNTER-CLOCKWISE!!!! But now I can't get it to go back to clockwise.

EDIT: What the heck this is driving me nuts, everytime I close my eyes it goes back the other way, and it keeps flipping from clockwise to counter-clockwise.

Holly mule! I could swear she was absolutely whirling counter-clock-wise and when I scrolled down a few millimetres to post the reply it turned clock-wise. Now I can't see the other way.

And now she's again rotating counter-clock-wise. :rolleyes3:

I can only see counter-clockwise rotation. Must be because I can't unwind this evening.

It was counter clockwise first.

I then took advice and stared at the woman's foot and now it is clockwise. :inquisitive:

Hepcat
10-16-2007, 05:37
I can change it's direction just by concentrating on it. At first it was just counter-clockwise, then I just had to think about it and it changed and now I can change it's direction quite easily.

UltraWar
10-16-2007, 18:33
I can control both directions. :2thumbsup:

I can simply see the clockwise rotation, although this probably could be easily explained - I do sometimes find that my right brain\left side of my body is rather poorly coordinated.

Craterus
10-16-2007, 19:59
Yeah, I can see both.

Not sure how it works though.

Slug For A Butt
10-16-2007, 21:31
Yup, at first I only got it anti clockwise... it was sooo obvious  until I took the above tip and stared at the foot (I narrowed my eyes so I could only see the foot).
BANG! It is now going clockwise and I can't change it back. :wall:

How strange. :dizzy2:

Ironside
10-17-2007, 19:12
Can get both now.

You cannot differ the back from the front when she's looking at you/away from you and this makes her limbs change. Right leg=clockwise, left leg=counter clockwise. And depending on that way you see the limb together with what you know is possible due to human physiology, she has to move in a speciffic way.

Lemur, any luck yet?
After carefully looking at the frames Husar showed, I guess I can see where the illusion should come from, but when I see it moving it just turns clockwise for me and I can't for the love of god pretend that it's going the oposite direction.

Lemur
10-18-2007, 05:10
Yeah, eventually I was able to switch the direction. Can't do it at will like some of our dextrously brained Orgahs, though. I think I even understand how they did the trick ...

Drisos
10-18-2007, 16:37
Q@ the people that are easily switching now: When you 'turn on' clockwise and look carefully and think of what you see - do you feel that things are 'wrong' about her anatomy, the order in which things appear first in the rotation, or does everything seem normal?

Kralizec
10-18-2007, 20:46
Hmmm, I could "see" her turning counter-clockwise by looking next to the picture itself. The moment I start looking at the animation directly again, it's going clockwise again.

Louis VI the Fat
10-18-2007, 21:11
When you 'turn on' clockwise and look carefully and think of what you see - do you feel that things are 'wrong' about her anatomy? As to the first part: when I think about what I see I do get turned on, yes. But I think this is because when I look carefully at her anatomy I don't feel there's much wrong with it. :book:

Hope this helps! :2thumbsup:

First I saw it counter clockwise...looked in on the thread, read a couple posts, lokked again and it was going clockwise. been going at it for 10 minutes, and its starting to drive me nuts...colockwise, counter clockwise, aggg!

John86
10-19-2007, 03:04
Wow, that freaked me out. I saw it going counter clockwise, then I clicked the link provided, I looked back, and now its stuck at clockwise and wont change.

Drisos
10-19-2007, 09:45
It's weird. I've tried lots of tips posted in this thread, and I still see her only going clockwise. I can imagine that you could see it as counter-clockwise, but I can't imagine the anatomy still being correct, so everytime I go try again to change direction I'm deep down expecting her to still go clockwise, that's probably why it doesn't work. :embarassed:
