I think i may have found out a reason why i was consistently finding castle sieges to be too short.

Basically, before a battle takes place in a province the human player is presented with a selection of choices:

Defend the Attack
Retreat to Castle
Abandon Province

The time that a siege will last is also presented at this time should you decide to retreat to the castle. However, if one decides to defend and subsequently loses, the time a siege will now last for does not take into account new (smaller) number of men as a result of the battle.

For instance, before a battle with the Spanish the number of men i had in the province would last for 1 year should they retreat to the castle. After the battle i got left with 40 men and 39 cavalry in a castle (capacity 420 men). It still stated that these men would only last for 1 year!!! If i put the equivalent number of men in a same-sized castle in another province i am informed they'll last for 6+ turns.

I think there is something awry with this. Can you advise/help?

Ahhh baws, the image doesn't work... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

Well, if you want a screen shot i can provide one for you. Still, you should find this easy enough to replicate anyway.

Ahhh... That figures.
Now it is understandable why my sieges seem so short.

To the developers,

There is also an issue i had on one of the sandy castle maps while being assaulted. Basically, the Ai used its ballista to bash a hole in my wall but then it couldn't get his men through the gap because of some impassable terrain in front of the hole in the wall! What happened as a result was the Ai's troops just amassed in a large pile beside the hole in the wall until the timer ran out!

Impassable terrain doesn't appear to be a good idea in this instance. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

There we go... proof! A freshly besieged province and look how many men are in that castle (bottom of picture)!

Like i said earlier, put 40 men and 40 cav in another castle and it'll last 6+ years.

This has been addressed; the AI should now take the accessibility of a wall into account when it's planning bombardments. (And thanks for reminding me about it, as otherwise we mightn't have remembered to mention it in the readme...)

Good stuff, always a pleasure never a chore. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

GilJaysmith, or any other CA member for that matter, can you comment on the first part of this thread about the miscalculated siege times following a battle in the province?

I mean, it is only logical that a defeated and thereby smaller force would be able to survive longer in the same castle compared to if they'd simply just retreated to the castle in the first place!?

At least if this was remedied there might be a greater point and need for assaulting castles. As it stands, because most of the battles in provinces involve large number of troops, if the time a siege will last is only calculated before the battle has taken place then we're usually left with 1 year sieges all the time (refer to picture above).... therefore little point in assaulting afterwards. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

Thanks http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Yes, it is very important to correct this.

I hate to see that I have to strike back at once, when I actually don't have the strength. A real bad way to lose a great general is this way...

There's also an interesting thread over at totalwar.com forums which follows closely points raised on this thread amongst others:

http://pub24.ezboard.com/fshoguntotalwarfrm5.showMessage?topicID=2083.topic

But ultimately i'd like to know the developer's stance on this as at the end of the day that's the only one that really matters... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

lol i think you'll want to add a "please" to that. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

but i am intrigued all the same.

It seems so... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

So, I will add a 'please' to the former sentence.
Hopefully that will bring them out.
