View Full Version : Why do Veteran&Praetorian Cohorts have 6 pila attack?

I'm curious what the logic behind this is. All other Roman citizen units (which have pila of course) have 4 pila attack.

thanks for your time:yes:

The writings of Suetonius clearly indicate "cohorti veterani et praetoriani pila grande fifti percenti est."

those of veteran praetorian cohorts have half as many more pila?

What does it mean?

that veteran cohorts have half as many pila again as ordinary cohorts. So in EB that translates to 6 for veterans as opposed to 4 for non veterans.

:sweatdrop:
...am I the only one who made the Freudian leap of assuming that bit of Latin meant something like "have pila half again as big as the regular cohorts"...?

But surley that means that they should have half as much again ammo, not attack?:inquisitive:

Though incidentaly I also think they should have more attack, though maybe only 1 more.

They all have two pila, so they all have the same ammo. Also, Praetorians and Veterans have longer range than other legionaries.

So the question still stands, unanswered...

From a stats system perspective they were stated as being more skilled with their pila. As to why that's up to the Roman folk but at least for the vets one would imagine 25 years of throwing the things has something to do with it.

Just one question:
How can a soldier hold 6 pila and a scutum?

Watchman
10-18-2007, 09:10
I don't think you could hold much anything in the hand that had the scutum. The grip's horizontal innit ?

Didn't the suctum have little sort of clip things to store 2 or 3 pila in?

Watchman

I'm pretty sure that would be Late Romans with their plumbata darts. Can't vouch for it of course.

If it was portuguese instead of latin in EB pretorians would be fighting more less like gaesatae :laugh4:

Learning portuguese, TWFanatic? :beam:

Well maybe yes, but what with the remaining 3? I doubt the Praetorians were able to hold 3 pila in one hand...

And according to TWFanatic they only fight with 2; so the ohter 3 you speak of would be non-existent altogether. A rather unfortunate choice of words for the opnening title though. ~;)

This thread seems to be getting very confusing, or at least I am:dizzy2: . Half the people seem to be arguing about missile attack and the other half about ammo amounts without any indecation of which is which.

Anyway, I think it is aggreed that most legionaries should have two pila, and 4 missile attack seems reasonable, although if it were up to me I might say five.

However the confusion seems to arrive with
"cohorti veterani et praetoriani pila grande fifti percenti est." The confusion seems to me to be from wether you interpret this to mean: Veterans have 1.5X as much ammo as normal legionaries, or wether you think it means vetrans have 1.5X attack compared to normals legionaries.

Personaly I think it clearly indicates that the praetorians have 1.5X ammo, thus they should have 3 pila rather than two, but I also think they should have +1 missile attack, though +2 is too much, IMHO.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

Guys, I don't speak Latin. I totally made that up. I added the letter I to the end of a bunch of words. Suetonius did not actually say that.

Also, "pila grande" apparently means something dirty in Portuguese!

Reminds me of that story about Mitsubishi Bahero, which for some reason didn't sell too well in Latin America... :sweatdrop:

Back in the 90s Jaguar(?) had problems to sell the 'Silver Mist' in Germany. A look in the dictionary might have helped that too.....

Sorry if the title is confusing. I'm asking why Vets and Praets have an attack rating of 6 for their pila when all other legionaries have an attack rating of 4.

All legionary-type units have 2 pila (which is historically accurate), thus all this discussion about how many they have or should have is pointless.

I was hoping to get an exact answer from an EB team member.:help:

I'll ask the stat people to take a look.

I wondered why I never saw this before and why I couldn't get "grande fifti percenti" ? And why I couldn't find the line in Suetonius' Caesars'? Big 50 percent in whatwever? I don't know his work at all, I thought it might have been some Med. misspelling of something? I just guessed 'half as many more.'

Good job.

So why are there 6?

I thought that was really, really obvious. Especially so because:
a) You said it (:grin:);
b) It doesn't even look like Latin.

There aren't 6, they have 2 pila just like everyone else. The attack is 6 instead of 4. From a stats perspective they are stated as being more skilled with pila than their regular counterparts. The reasoning for that is something the Roman folks will have to explain, but as I said before I would imagine its a product of having been hurling the things for a couple of decades. I personally think it might have been a minor stats mix-up of giving them 2 extra skill levels instead of one, but since we're going to check up on the Evocata stats anyway we'll figure this out along with that.

youre right, theyre absolutely too high, we must have overlooked it during our latest "we hate Romans" purge of making them weaker due to their chronic inferiority.

Makes sense.

I'll probably just reduce their attack to 5.
