Anyone know whats the deal with KH having to either the Epilektoi Hoplitai or Spartiatai Hoplitai as bodyguards?

Is it young generals trained in Sparta get the Spartan Hoplites?
or
Just the generals at the start of the campaign?
or
something else?

I am just curious, I don't think matter both are capable combat units.

Spartan Generals at the start of the game get the Spartan Bodyguards, all other generals - either non-spartans after the start of the game, non-spartans at the start of the game, or spartans that you get after the start of the game - get the Epilektoi.

...although personally I swapped the Spartans for Epikletoi in my copy. Seems kinda silly to charge the KH something like two and half grand for three generals... especially as the stat differences between the Spartans and Epikletoi are pretty minimal and IMO the latter fit conceptually for Spartan grandees just fine.

It does serve to make the early game harder for the KH player. I only got 1.0 today and haven't installed it yet, so I'm not sure how much the new 'difficulty' script impacts the difficulty of their game.

They were far too easy in .8x. It serves as an additional hindrance. This may no longer be needed if the Maks are really strong around the KH now. They were pushovers in Southern Greece in .8x, mostly because Antigonos went always north.

Oh, and Xanthippus of Qarthadastim gets the spartiatai too, as he was a spartan mercenary.

So I hear. But then, he spawns through a script doesn't he ? So he's more sort of a special Mercenary General.

that is correct. he is not a family member. he's certainly been put to work upon arrival though, moving to finalize iberia, and now leading the loot rampage across italy that would make hannibal jealous.

Sounds like he made a solid career choice then. :pirate2: Yarr.

Speaking of which, can mercenary generals become men of the hour, and thus become part of the family?

lol, i had him conquer one city and then just govern it. I think he's in his sixties now..

Btw, is Hannibal called Hannibal Barca, or just plain Hannibal? As I'm wondering if a character called Hannibal I have now is indeed THE Hannibal (and there's no "bio" trait in his sheet).

I doubt it...Wasn't hannibal rampaging around Italy in 217ish?

That would make him unborn at game start, and they can't give bios to characters who aren't there at the start.

I assume they would be able to spawn a general named hannibal barca, but I don't think they've ever chosen to do this. Honestly, I'm not sure if it's in 1.0.

It would be cool though.

Hannibal Barca is his father.
I don't think the character you have is THE Hannibal though, it wasn't exactly a rare name.

Hannibal Barca is his father. That would be Hamilcar Barca.

Historical figures who haven't been born at the start of the game will not appear.

Carthaginians had a very few names that are still repeating. Hamilcal, Hannibal etc. are very often use by them , so is not uncommon found them in family tree of EB. For identification they use the system Hannibal, son of XY.

Their upper class (at least, dunno about the lower ranks) seems to have been a little funny that way. It's like they had around a dozen or two names to pick a name for their kids from...
