First post so please be gentle!

I started a game as the French and attacked 2 of the English provinces in France. I took them with out a message from the pope threatening to excomunicate me. The English then march into flanders, take it, again with no warning from the Pope. I promptly retook flanders and invaded Wessex winning the battle. Then i get a message from the Pope saying "2 years blah blah blah".

How does this Excom, stuff work? Do you have to be at war so many years or what?

Hey you! La Vallette http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif He was a grandmaster of the Order of St John (known also as Knights Hospitallers) during their 268 year stay in Malta...he was the grandmaster during the Great Siege of 1565.

When your enemy only has 50% of your lands you will get a warning. So if you want to invade a small but strong faction you have to invade at several points at once.

When the Pope says "2 years ect ect..." You have that turn and the next to finish your actions, that means you only have ONE more aggressive action possible. I found that out as the HRE when the French took Provence from me and I was too late to lift the siege.

If you have a fort under siege, end it at once. It will be considered an aggressive act if the Fort falls when the two years are up.
And you don't want to be excommed... You might get a Crusade on your neck.

Yep. Was in Malta in 1993, fell in love with the island and its history so read up on the two great sieges (1565 and 1940-41). Hence the name.

Must say that i have the greatest respect for what the Maltese citizens did during both.

Hey Terazawa, I went on holiday to Malta last month, very hot, loved Mdina - very...quiet and much cooler than Valetta. But I caught gastroenteritis there and was ill for 9 days http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

I bought "Malta Convoy" to read on the plane home. Boy, I knew that things were tight during the siege, but sheesh, they were days away from running out of everything! And how the Ohio (tanker with vital fuel load, without which Malta would have capitulated) ever made it into harbour and didn't sink...

Thanks Kraxis, remember reading that now! Guess i will pick a few fights with the HRE now, without the threat of excom!

Make sure to make peace with the British, or at least have large border garrisons to hold them back.

The English are as good as gone (this is about 50 years on), they only have the province in the south of france, wales, mercia and northumbria left.

The king and his heirs are trapped in southern france and the rest of his forces are in mercia. May wipe them out before the two years are up, just seems bad to wipe out my own people (have already killed three english kings!)

If the king is young it can be worth it to kill him fast! Or else he might get a good number heirs, heirs that have yet to come of age. They can be a pain as they have a tendency to recreate their country when they come of age.

Oh well I lived there for all my life http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif Thanks for the respect, you pay back by spending a lot on shopping and souvenirs...hehe... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif Malta has a good history, was quite important in the old times due to its strategic position and deep harbours. La Vallette was a great grandmaster btw - a 70 yeard old that used to fight bravely in the fort breaches...lmao! His courage inspired the Knights some say...leading to the victory, altough the stupidy of both Piali and Mustapha Pasha are to be remembered...the victory of 1565 was remembered last Sunday.

Sunbachi, here the temperature can go 40 during summer...Mdina is on high land, must be cooler + it's very closed and cramped place. The facts of WW2 (the convoys) are quite exciting for the reader, the Maltese people were almost without hope because every help convoy was getting destroyed by the Axis powers...but the Ohio & co. (called St Mary's Convoy) made it in.

If you want more info about it there are some interesting sites too I believe.
